C100: Philip Bloom reviews the Canon C100

You've got to put a warning label on these posts man. Almost got smacked in the face with that ad. Haha.

Though, I also, thank you for being a DVXuser sponsor. Love this site, and it is possible in part because of your work. Thanks.

the opinion i was most interested in from Phillip was not really dealt with in the review. its the elephant in the room.

the C300 is his camera of choice and has been fro the last 12 months. so surely a canon camera that pretty much does the same job @ less than half the price would be a no brainer. With a ninja, and Z finder its a pretty much a match spec wise.

but he seems like he hasn't really got an opinion on the c100 - just its alright.

That in and of itself IS an opinion.

If you have the cash and clientele to support owning a c300, then it really is a no brainer.

Otherwise as you said, the C100 and Ninja 2 cannot be beat.

Philip stated on Facebook that he doesn't like or use external recorders, so without putting words in the man's mouth, I think thats how he approached the review. He did recommend in a round-about way that it would be a good companion for the C300.

I love my C100 / Ninja 2 combo. Each to their own.

Forget the C100.....I just want a cat that can help me edit!!!

Seriously though....seemed like a fair review but I do find it odd that he would not mention that with a Ninja2 you can get darn near C300 quality footage at half the price. Even if he doesn't like using the external recorder that seems worth mentioning. I know I personally would have had serious reservations regarding purchasing this if I was stuck with the internal AVCH only codec, so this ability is a "huge" selling point that isn't touched on.

+1.
I did a 2 camera shoot last week mixing a Red Scarlet and my C100 Ninja 2 kit and the editor said the 2 mixed very well in post and CC.

Actually, the C100 with ninja is better than the C300 with internal codec being that the c100/ninja can record a 220mbit prores over a 50mbit XF codec. That's not damn near. That damn better.

Thanks for the complement James. I always worry that I'm being a bit too spammy with the post with the links and ads.

DVXuser has always been a great resource for me personally. I appreciate the loyalty that DVXuser's feel for the sponsors.

Texas Media Systems made the process of leasing the C100 pretty darn easy and Terry is a good guy. He didn't pay me to say that :)

Phillip uses the C100 Z-Finder the same way I do. Don't expect it to work in the tilted position and it works very well. He went so far as to not use the Z-bands at all!

+1^10 - ROFL! That is one cool cat.

I guess that when you own a C300, the C100 is just a B-lister, a little bit 'meh'.

We didn't hear about audio quality (fair enough from a cameraman I suppose GD&R). Timelapse is missing, but the "1 frame per 0.5 to 2.0 seconds" is a very useful rate for event videographers and not in the comfort zone of DSLRs - so I'd argue that's a missing thing too.

I didn't see the love for WDR or C-Log, and yes it is the same chip, and YES it's got way much more detail than the FS100 - I was an FS100 owner, and I put the two side by side, really trying to love my FS100. C100 won. It won on image quality, ergonomics, audio and pro features (like fractional shutter speeds, dual slot record, WFM, etc). If he were comparing IQ with FS700, it's a different story, lovely clever camera - but some of us will have to choose C100.

Oh well, still a stonkingly great camera.

I don`t think "better late, than not at all" does apply to this video. And after being way too late this review still seems kind of rushed to my eyes. A lot of general knowledge (IS lenses also work with the C100!!!), 3 Zacuto products featured and the trademark "entertainment" parts. But no battle testing, no personal menu set-ups and really trying to get the best out of the C100.
PB basically summed it up when he said, as a C300 and 1DC owner he had his bases covered. No need to further explore the "lower end" model, with the most obvious omission NOT comparing the C300 and C100 image side by side. Since he is one of the few pro-reviewers with access to both cameras, this would have made sense.
But I liked the slomo part and as always he seems like a great guy to hang out with.

Operational-wise, I do enjoy using a C300 over the a C100. EVF and LCD are much improved in the 300, and there's better weather sealing, yada, yada, yada... But the C100 does have features I wish that the C300 had: Wide DR gamma & the EF-S lens setting being primary among those. Push-button auto iris and focus is nice too. I think Philip did a nice job, but some features and/or capabilities were dismissed in the review that doesn't reveal some of it's strongest points in relation to the other members of its family. Maybe he's getting a little tired of doing camera reviews? After all, these days, almost all cameras are really pretty great and each one has some kind of stand-out feature that makes it particular suitable for a segment of the market. I think he's got the tools he enjoys using, and would rather spend his time out shooting.

I strongly believe that Mr Bloom is rightly tiring of being a Bell Wether - some poor sod who's been cursed with seeing the future, when all he wants to do is shoot good stuff.

There are those amongst us who are natural curators of kit. Technophiles who do that funny thing that Gregor Mendel did with peas - bringing the best of breeds together. They should be lauded and rewarded as they do stuff we'd not want to.

Whereas Mr Bloom correctly judged two big shifts in the industry (DoF and DSLR), is a poster child of doing Social Media correctly, 'seized the carp' on a few opportunities, gladly shared his knowledge with people who recognised his talent - whilst also acknowledging that some people can manage this process better than he, and can ensure that it would be a sustainable process, has now learned that life on the road - the Rock and Roll of touring - is not good. He's back. He's back and looking at his to-do list. Ah yes, the C100. Well, yes. It's very okay.

I don't feel any enthusiasm for the C100 from Mr Bloom - this was a review made out of duty, rather than passion. As such, it is fine, but... Please, can he just pretend to tilt at some windmills? Provide some extreme comparisons?

Okay, moving on...

In October Canon will release a firmware update for the C300 that will enable the Push To Focus feature.

With the 18-135? Got C100 and that lens. AF isn't anything to write home about. FS700's tap-to-focus feature and Face Follow are what we want on a Videographer's camera. Canon's implementation is... okay. But it's not brilliant. It really isn't. I'd not have this as a headline feature. Nor the auto iris.

I find The push to focus feature useful. I have tested its a accuracy and it works. Sure it's not fast like a DSLR body but I would rather have the feature than not at all.

Agreed - any type of auto focus I would only use in a push-button way anyway. Even shooting the most on the fly ENG/docu footage, constant auto-focus does more harm than good. Push to focus I'd like for just a few simple situations out of convenience than necessity.

Guys, try it. Try it. Constant AF? It's wading through custard (or your choice of non-Newtonian fluid). Like most AF systems, it develops a huge infatuation with the most inappropriate plane of focus.

I invested in 'the right kind of lens' for this mode to work, and I'm happy to say that it's a great 'Dad-Cam' lens - really works great on my 550D/T2i, if you can deal with the fact that it is TOTALLY auto - it is the most non-parfocal lens I have ever worked with, and if you want AF, you have completely and utterly denied your right to manual focus.

Go ahead. Try it.
