PC Offload from the Camera.

Got a colleague renting my hvx rig for a spec commercial. He is in a pc environment out in the field. (poor guy)

So he has no express adapter or powerbook to offload. (PCMCIA Slot??) He probably needs to go right out of the camera.

I've done it several times, just having the camera show up as a drive via the fw 400 port on a macbook. But Never with a pc.

I think he has a dell laptop running vista or the os prior.

Will this be a problem?

Any tips?

i'm just learning myself, but...

i run a pc and have had better luck with usb than firewire. pulls down much faster then i imagined. just make sure he installs all the drivers from the cd and he should be straight. obviously he'll want to test a bit.

-install drivers
-make sure switch is turned to p2
-turn on camera
-menu>other functions>pc mode - usb device
-hit mode button to change to vcr mode
-hold mode button to change to usb out
-pc should prompt at that point -- i usually choose to view files so i can just copy them over

Firewire device mode is *not* to be used with Windows. The manual flat-out says that it is not guaranteed to work.

So using USB will give better results, as you've found.

I run off usb from camera to my pc. I've pulled 100 gigs and no problems. Just install the driver, hook up and you'll find the camera drives in "My Computer." Drag and Drop where you want them.

I even bypass the comp and drop to an external drive. Works great and it's pretty fast. 5 min for a 16g card.

Can you use Firewire connected directly to an external hard drive with a 1394 port? (I'm a PC person)

Edit - actually I see in a previous post that you cannot do this. Oh well.

Sorry to hijack this thread but my question sort of fits in with yours.when copying files over is it not beter to use P2CMS then to just drag the files over or does it not really make a difference. Its just im goin to spain next week and only have a 16gb card so am takin my acer apsire one laptop to dump the footage off and as it isnt the fastest of computers would be easier to just copy the files over then to use p2cms.any help would be appreciated.

On Windows I've never ever ever ever heard of any complications (file glitches or anything like that) from dragging the files over. However, people can still screw up a file copy by not copying everything, or by cherry-picking certain files to copy, or by changing the name of the CONTENTS folder, or a million other user-error things. P2CMS prevents all those user errors, and it also gives you the option of doing a data-verified copy, so ... I think it's far less important on Windows than it is on the Apple hardware, it's still got benefits.
