Hey guys. Well, ive been around these boards for a while now and have just finally received my dvx100b ( thanks to Rush for the awsome deal and smooth transaction )

Im a 19 year old/ 20 in two weeks - actor who discovered how fun a camera can be a few years back and have been playinga round with them none stop.

So this little clip im about to show you is a minute long. It's just me playing something on the piano. The sole purpose of this was just to see what i could do with the camera. Took me a night to read the Barry Green book that came with it. Lol, so i woke up and put it ot the test with the limited knowledge i had of the camera.

I had 3 point lighting. One home depo light and one photography light with a diffuser. I used my AT835b to record the sound and edited everything in premier pro 1.5

I used white diffusion from MB and colour corrected the rest myself. Played a bit with the framing and let my computer render for a while. 24P with no settings in camera, all done in post ( my preference )

Here are some originals and afters.

Now here is the video. Question for the experts out there. One the shot of the piano keys from the side ( beginning of video/ 4th GRAB ) why is there this flickering effect on the sharp and flat keys ( black keys )

I did flicker removal but that seemed to do nothing. Any suggestions?

Enjoy!

SORRY BOUT THE COMPRESSION

Nice grabs... as part of an audience I like the bottom two best. The other two seem like there's alot missing... I'm almost thinking reg. 16:9 aspect might be more suitable, or closer up to the action for the top two if sticking with that ultra wide format. Then again... I haven't seen the video yet (currently downloading it)

i see what you mean but those are bad stills seeing as its in the middle of action. So its not accurate to the fram positioning for the whole shot.

Just checked out the video (took a while to get).

I liked it... good shots, especially considering you were doing it all alone right?

The ultra wide aspect is okay in most parts, but it's still bugging me when it shows a head on shot, and your mouth and lower face is cut out of the picture, and loosing that emotion (if it were a split second, don't think it'd be a problem, but sometimes it's like that for a second or so). I'd be tempted to say, either get a real good closeup of the eyes, or the mouth, than to try to fit everything in and end up loosign the lower half of the mouth, etc... Choping the top part of the head is okay though, so maybe even just takign that footage and paning it up a bit? Or doing a pan of the video at that part.... i guess it'd kinda like be doing a tilt, which I'm sure you could get away with since you have all that exra room vertically to play with.

Other than that... great stuff!

dude, you got me thinking, the verticle tilt would be a great idea. Kk ill go back and play around with it. Have to get to bed now, call is at 8 am! yikes.

actually just tried tilting the footage and it didnt work. i dont have enough horizontal image. just blackness when tilted.

Tried to watch but the file got stuck downloading for some reason so it froze just before you start to play.

Congrats on your new camera and keep working!

what do you guys use as clip on a centered frame to achieve the wide widescreen look?

i really should go though. this place is addictive.

just shoot the clip farther back and letterbox it after...something effective to do is mask the AR with like electrical tape to see ur after viewing area.

I'm really digging the color correction. great job there. I also love the super wide, 2.35:1 aspect ratio. I'm going to be shooting a film with some war elements soon, and I have no doubt in my mind I'll stick with that ratio. Excellent choice in music, too. That was one of the first things I ever learned on a piano! bonus points for that.

I thought your shot composition was fine... the lead in and out were a bit long. The original shots of the piano seemed overdone I mean we know what a piano looks like and it didnt offer me any new perspective. I would have preferred to see the pianist at the piano preparing to play with some expression. Just my opinion.

definately, would have been alot better with a bit more variation. I really only gave myself like 30 mins to film as many angles as possible just to have my "first time editing dvx footage". but yeah given more time and an actual storyboard ( pre think ups) it could have been much more interesting.

Could anyone lend a hand to my question about the flickering on the black piano keys?

the grabs are nice. The one negative thing I can say about your cc is that it washes out your highlights. In the original shot with your back to the camera, we see a light on the piano, and the light its casting down.

In the corrected shot I couldn't even tell there was a light there. For a second I thought you'd removed the light. With your light dissappearing like that I'd think it will be tough to control the look of a scene.

Just my thoughts. Otherwise the cc was pretty nice.

Flicker

Flicker

I am also interested in what anyone would have to say about the flicker. I noticed too and have discussed this effect with a HVR-Z1U user who mentioned it as a "problem" with the DVX100s. Any way to correct this or a workaround?

Hope some wise user will respond.

I don't have any idea on that flicker issue. But I thought your grabs were cool. Keep it up.

im starting to think now that it has to do with something about 24p aswell as your shutter speed. not sure why i have this feeling, but i think ill put it to the test soon.

as i was reading in barrys book, there is a strobing effect if one pans too quickly, perhaps the same applies with zoomed in glide shots, a type of pan. that mixed with the strobing of pure over exposed reflections... perhaps?

ı got flıcker once brıefly. on some trees wıth brıght light comıng through the background.

but ıt never repeated ıtself. and i havent been able to make ıt repeat the effect.

just happens sometımes.

* one sıde note. Dıd you use any flourescant lighting? What happens sometimes ive noticed is that the subtle flicker of highlights with flourescant lights goes unnoticed, untıl you CC. pushin the brights higher makes them visible. it happened in a short i shot. there was no flıcker, cced, then suddenly flicker. Tried it wit 2 different NLEs same effect.
