can anyone help me who knows these cameras. are there any simularities? are the differences big? please help.

DVX wins hands down...

DVX has three 1/3" CCD's
GL2 has three 1/4" CCD's

DVX has Progressive CCD's
GL2 has Interlaced CCD's

DVX has Zoom and Focus Rings
GL2 only has a Focus Ring

The one big thing that really wins it for the DVX is the 24PA recording mode on the DVX....it's just the bomb ;)

i know how well the dvx proforms but i need a good camera thats pretty cheap. and the dvx, even though i would love to get one, is out of my range of price.

You can get alot more out of the dvx. depends on what your using it for. If you are shooting events like weddings and football games and such, the GL2 would be good for that. But your shooting features, then the dvx is the camera.

You can definitely get a used GL2 for about $300 less then a used DVX....but personally I'd suggest borrowing 300 bones from friends or family to get the DVX.

Then again I always try to say that one should never put things off.....A camera is just a tool and the important thing is getting the content...so if all you can afford is a GL2, then by all means buy one and start shooting.

Pay attention to the marketplace here on DVXUSER, and try low balling someone selling a DVX...you never know, they just might sell it to you at around the same price you'd find the GL2.

Enough of my back and forth...good luck.

What are you looking for here? :)

I don't mean this badly, because I'm sure most people have done the same at one point or another, but it kind of seems like you're asking if you're missing out on much if you buy a GL2 instead of a DVX, and hoping that you aren't.

Unfortunately, that's not the case -- the DVX runs many circles around the GL2, and if you're planning to do anything in a cinematic style, you're doing yourself a giant disservice by going with a GL2.

Like others, I would advise doing what you need to do in order to get a DVX instead of a GL2 -- you'll cry once and be happy ever after, instead of not going with what you really should and wishing you had the DVX every time you use the GL2.

(That said . . . any camera is only as good as how you use it, and either way, you'll need to learn as much as you can in order to get best results. :) )

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup: that's it!
this thread should be closed now!!!:)

A friend of mine has a GL2 and he's DYING to buy my DVX from me.

GL2 is good for the lower price - but it's really not in the same category.

the dvx doesn't make you a tool. it is a tool. I just didn't want anyone misinterpreting it. Yea, if you hold a dvx in 1 hand and a hvx in the other, you would know the difference.

I shoot sports mainly, and I have a DVX100B, but have used the DVC20, and also seen GL2 footage.

Everyone sees my footage and says it looks better than anything else they could have had. They've hired other people, and always are convinced that my footage blows them away. The people who know formats think that i shoot HD. no, only a dvx.

The GL2 footage looks like consumer footage. I know some networks use the gl2 when they need footage thats better than a regular 1 ccd consumer camera, but need something cheap and "disposable". in short, the GL2 is looked upon as a camera thats better than a consumer, but no-one really wants to use it when there are other cameras out there that can just blow you away.

As has been said, it does really depend on what you're going to be using it for. If you have any interest in attempting a "film look," the GL2 is simply not the camera for you. Not only does it lack any 24p mode, but it also has a very "video" look to the colors. Even in 60i mode, the DVX has a far better "film-like" color to it. OTOH, if you're just going to be shooting weddings in 60i (for example), the GL2 does have one minor advantage, and that's the 20X zoom lens in case you get stuck at the back of the church. :) Still, the DVX has far superior audio capabilities; a Beachtek or Juicedlink adapter box is pretty much a requirement with the GL2, and even then, you're just barely functional compared to a DVX.

If you're looking for a camera to start making films with, and you can't swing a DVX, an option to look at might be the Canon HV20/30/40 series. It's single-chip CMOS vs. 3-CCD, yeah, but I don't think it makes that much difference. The HV's don't have nearly as much manual control as the DVX, but really, neither does the GL2, so you're probably pretty even there. And the audio is pretty much the same, so count on the Beachtek/Juicedlink again. But you've got the advantage of 24p and (in my limited experience with the HV30) a much less "video" look to the colors. (You know, come to think of it, the HV30 is in the office this weekend. I should grab that and get a little more experience with it this weekend. :D )

Anyway, IMO both cameras have their uses (and I have used both; in fact, I have a GL2 and a DVX100A sitting side-by-side on the shelf at the moment :) ), but the DVX is definitely the more versatile.
