Panning

Using my 550D i have found any pans to be poor compared to what i have always got previously even compared to my HV30 in Progressive 25P,even using my heaviest tripod and panning as smooth as i can the picture has what to me is an unaceptable juddery look, perhaps these 550s need some setting that i am unaware of for smooth panning ie locked aperture or does the jelly/aliasing on these cams cause this.

What lens are you using? I can't imagine it looking as bad as you're making out if it's on a decent tripod, yes the rolling shutter does cause problems but generally only with moderately fast pans/whips. Try using a stabilised lens and see if it's still as bad?

What kinda head are you using? Is it fluid head? Maybe you need more weight. YOu do have to be smoother with a DSLR than a regular camcorder.

I use the davis and sanford (Fm18) fluid head/tripod and i have noticed to be really smooth you may want to add a little weight. I usually dont put my camera straight ont he tripod, i put my camera on my shoulder rig, and hten mount the whole shoulder rig on the tripod. This adds 5 or 8 lbs, and makes it buttery smooth. Its also nice to be able to switch from sticks to shoulder in like 2 seconds.

Its because rolling shutter and CMOS ,motion blur is a bit different and you have to live with it,its not that far from CCD's 25p but its a bit more stuttery,if you compare then compare on the same field of view, dont compare 550d with 50mm and hv30 zoomed out to max.Zoom in on hv30 to match 550d field of view and test.Anyway, youve got to live with it.What you see on 550d screen is what you get,if its more stuttery than that then theres something wrong with your workflow in editor.Footage looks more smooth on TV's than on monitors so its not so visible when you watch on TV.
Show us the vid ,itll be easier to answer.

We are 25P here, i use a velbon 700D when i can its fairly heavy to lug long distances and i do use a smaller one at times,i am not worried to that extent and if i cant get over the problem i will only pan when realy nesessary, regarding settings as i am new to DSLRs apart from focus which i do manualy with difficulty as i have not found a loupe yet that magneticaly fixes and aperture alteration at times i mostly leave it on auto. Thanks very much for the input.
Forgot to say its on direct camera play as well as on edited video,i think my panning may have to improve for DSLRs.
