Hey all, just sharing a quick short I did for a project in school. The requirements were to shoot the film in 5 shots excluding the title shot. I did it in 6 or 7 ;) but he said it was ok. Anyways, have a look and enjoy! TK

I liked it, but the panic room blue was a bit over the top- and I didn't really understand what happened at the end, he found a pill but he couldn't take it in time?

Carlos- I really liked it. I really have to applaud you on creating tension and "action" without quick cutting... especially when dealing with a subject that would usually rely on modern hyper-editing. There were shots in there that lasted for at least 10 seconds that felt fast paced, without the aid of any cutting, which is great. Besides that, I thought the handheld worked well-- even the POV shot seemed to work in this short, even though I tend to find them cheesy. The only negative comment I have is about the coloring... there were parts that seemed a little too dark and others where the blacks were crushed far too heavily, imo. That and the secondary color seemed to flicker at one or two points... now, all these color issues may have just been my monitor that I'm currently on-- its old-- so the darks may be fine and the flickering may just be the choppiness of my own computer, but I figured I should mention it just in case. Besides that, great job, must've been hard to do with such a tight shot limitation! Congratulations.

Thank you both for the compliments and suggestions. It not only makes me better as a film maker, but also helps me continue my passion for film.

With that said:

James: In response to your last question "he found a pill but he couldn't take it in time?" yes, your are correct. That was supposed to be the ending, but I probably could of made it better by having him pause for a second then having him slowly drop the pill. But unfortunately this assignment has already been turned in lol. Tanks for also giving your honest opinion about my colorgrading. I'm trying to get better at not going over the top with it, but I feel that I'm getting better with it each time. I also wasn't trying to make it like (the panic room blue), but unfortunetly that's what will happen when films use something that has already been used right? But thanks man I do appreciate your comments.

Kohr: Thank you also for you comment. It was hard shooting this with limited shots lol. As you saw each shot was pretty long, I did this to complete the story with the limited shots allotted. Thank you for acknowledging that man, it was tough. The POV was also hard to do. Without a lens adapter it was almost virtually impossible to get true POV out of this thing. So I ended up deciding to make it a little off-center to still give it a POV feel, but also add an observational feel to it. Hopefully the colors weren't flickering. I haven't noticed it, but if anyone else notices please let me know. I wonder what would cause that? If there is flickering, would you know what could cause that?
Thanks,
Carlos

Its happened to me before when I've cut a piece of a take that I actually wind up keeping, and then in applying secondary color I skip the little tail or head of the clip that actually is cut off, believing it to still be connected. So then you wind up with two colorings in the same clip-- but I'll watch it again to see if it was just something weird with my monitor.

Okay, I think I found it: the color switches at 1:21
(as in, the head of the clip, from 1:20 to 1:21, there is one second of a bluer hue... that switches to a orange hue at 1:21 and onwards) Hope that helps

Edit- Figured I'd add this in- watching that shot again reminded me to compliment you on it. I love the use of depth to make it feel as if the ground is racing underneath him and the use of the jagged lines of the fence to show the danger/disorientation. Talent.

Carlos well done for such a short piece and constraints.

Personally I didnt mind the colors at all and the overall image kept me focused where I was meant to be. Interesting use of the glasses to change the focus around.

The story was my only issue - he has an alarm that reminds him to take meds, they must be important meds considering the end consequence - but he allowed himself to run out, kind of didnt fully buy that. Good job.

haha thanks Noel... yea I was thinkin it was a little far fetched, but what movie in hollywood isn't!? ;) But I do appreciate the compliments.

WoW! thanks for taking the time out to help me out Kohr! Yea, i checked AE and i spliced one of my adjustment layers accidently. Thanks for pointing that out; I appreciate it. Jeez, usually I'm a stickler on my films and review them a million times... Looks like i need to review them better. lol

Thank you for the compliment on the glasses too. I was hoping some people would catch that. ;)

TK man & thanks again for the help.
p.s. you have (very) good eyes... lol

I thought this was a good short. I liked the colors and the music. Liked the opening logo and credits. Having said that, I felt like some of the shots were too long and by that I mean the opening shot with the pills on the table. I got that somebody's taking way too many pills early on and then the shot continued a little shaky and then he picks up the remote. Maybe if you had 2 different angles of the pills and cut from one to the other that would have helped. And then at the very end, him holding the pill - that seem to run just a bit too long as well. Other than that, you had some nice shots in here. Good job overall.

Thanks for the tips and compliments Marlon. Unfortunately, with this short I was put under some limitations. One of those limitations were I had to shoot it with a limited amount of shots, I also didn't have a steady cam which sucked at the same time. But I do agree with you on how long the shots were. I did that so I could fit the story in with such limited shots allotted. But I do appreciate your comments and suggestions. I will definitely keep them in mind when I work on my next film.
Take care man,
Carlos

I totally understand about limitations. LOL. Trust me. Don't fret about the steadicam though. It's fine to have shaky camera shots as long as you present that "this is real life" type of theme. Like the camera angle or view is from an actual person's perspective and everything is fast-paced. And I did see that real life theme here - that opening shot was just the only one that stood out. Again, good film and keep at it.

I thought it was well done Carlos! The colors seemed fine to me...but I'm not good at that kind of stuff anyways.

I liked the look and style of the whole film.

Nice work!

I think that thanks to post you have taken your film to another level

I don't know how I feel about mixing together other peoepl's soundtracks, but it added so much to this little short I couldn't say don't go it again, it works for you :)!!

Congrats on the great short, the cinematography was very interesting, the editing as well. Nice titles :) Taking a motion graphics class right now just to work on those.

Good advice, thanks. So are you saying shaky camera won't work in say LOTR? I was always told not to set limitations on myself when shooting. If it looks good, shoot it. Right? I mean, there are some limitations on this. I would assume you are saying only use shaky cam in a "real life theme" because in a fantasy theme, you would want the audience to stay inside the world and not outside of it. Would the shaky cam distract the viewer from it?

Thanks man. Yea, i've learned color will be liked by some and not by others. I always try to keep that in mind when I edit my films. I would love to please everyone, but it isn't going to happen. Everyone has different opinions and I respect that.

Hey I appreciate it Charlie!

Yea, Mixing those soundtracks together was a fun project. I knew i wanted a style of score like Room 23; so I took the two songs that I thought would fit the best, and mixed them together. I took low hits, dark ominous sounds, certain high points, certain low points and faded them at the certain in and out points that matched my footage. It takes some time, but fun!

I hope you enjoy the motion graphics class. After Effects is hands down my favorite program to work with.

TK,
Carlos
