Panasonic's new version of HPX300

Unfortunately dynamic range is the one thing I couldn't test satisfactorily. I couldn't get ahold of a light meter to use to set up a proper DR comparison. So I make no claims on DR, whether it's the same, better, or worse than the 300 or EX1/EX3. I couldn't test it satisfactorily.

The EX1 had a dynamic range advantage over the HPX300. The 370 has improved on the 300 and matches or beats the EX3 in every sensor test I threw at it, but dynamic range is an unknown quantity. I wish I could have put them both up on the stouffer chart side by side, but I was lucky enough to find a chroma du monde chart, and that's not all that useful for testing dr.

Could you have the chance to properly measure this in a near future?

This kind of information is of superlative relevance for HPX300 owners considering an upgrade to the HPX370...

Anyway, thank you so much Barry... You are truly unique... and your supports invaluable!

Had an opportunity to shoot some footage with a production model of the 370 last week. You can certainly tell it's been improved over the 300.

Here's a quick frame grab from some of the stuff I shot.

I debated whether to put up a shot of an elk or this one but I figured most people would study this one a lot more than the elk shot. :)

A big thanks to my best bud Jon Van Allen for having to endure hours of Marie in a bikini as well as keeping the 370 under wraps. How he must have suffered! :)

Ok, just for you. Mikko!

I really liked how you can see the reflection of the trees behind me in the elks eye.

Kevin,
Looks wonderful... both Marie and that elk too!
Is there a chance to have a full res pic of each shot for download?
AVC-Intra? 1080? 720? 24p? Mind you share the settings?

Pleeeaaaase, help me if you can!

Puff..... what a time for panasonic to do this!! I must buy a camera in this month and my choice was for the hpx-301. But now I have this problem:

- So I know the camera (hpx370) is available from now in the USA, right? but what happens in europe with the Hpx-371? Can anyone tell me?

I must give an answer in the next days about the hpx-301 or I will lose the price offer and I cant wait no longer for buying a camera...

I really need some info about the european situation.

I can't answer as to whether an existing 301 owner would want a 370. But anyone who has been looking at a 300 would be thrilled to leap on the 370. It fixes the skew issue, its chips match or exceed the EX1/EX3's, it's more sensitive, with less noise.

I have never had a noise problem with our two 301's as I light things properly and dont do wedding videos and expect sony zero lux performance! I have set them up re BBC spec and it is notable that this seems to be just an upgrade for you USA NTSC guys?

Perfectly reasonable approach. If you already have a 300/301, there's no compelling reason to sell it at a loss and spend more to get a 370, unless you really, really, really need the 1080/24p with much less skew or you really need the sensitivity improvement.

I can do 720 24p with under and over crank anyway but as once again 24 frame is for you USA guys we just shoot 1080i 25np and let it convert then same way we do with your 24 frame movies.

Having cut my teeth on film sets, I can say with certainty that lag and skew are two different animals.

Indeed, my point was that "pan with reckless abandon" is a relatively
new demand :-)

That said, the ASC deg. per sec/distance tables work for CMOS sensors at 24p.

Contact your local dealer. They should be able to help you.

Unfortanily, they are not... they didnt even knew about the existence of hpx370 and probably I will end up buying the camera in another country (but always an european country).

My question is about Panasonic strategy and clarity of information. This time the european version should be the same camera as the hpx370 is global; and the title of the brochure also included Hpx-371 and other versions... so is there anything stopping the release of all versions?

I think its ridiculous that Panasonic makes a statement about a new camera that does not clarify this kind of things. All I know is that in europe (this week ,this day, this hour) they are still trying to sell as many HPX-301 as they can (various offers) as if there was no hpx-370, no new sensor, no nothing... For me, that is imoral. And the worst is that I am the fool in the middle of their game. I need (as all hpx300 buyers also need...) some honesty before marketing tricks.

They know what is going to happen and we all have the right to that information - in Europe, U.S.A. or in Mars...

So, please, if anybody can help us understanding the global situation of the Hpx370/1, say something... I really need to set up my professional life

The only ones who can tell you Panasonic Europe's plans is ... Panasonic Europe. We don't even know when the HPX370 will be available here in the US, much less when it'll be available in a different country.

Presumably a US-bought unit would work in Europe with no problems, but you likely wouldn't be eligible for the warranty coverage if you bought outside your home market.

I'm uploading some footage I shot with the 370 last week to ExposureRoom.

I've been following this group of dancers for over a year working on telling their story. The owner of the team has survived abuse as a child and an adult, cancer, you name it but she has an incredible outlook on life and empowers her team of dancers like nothing I've seen before.

So, I thought it was fitting to try out the 370 at one of their practice sessions. Besides, I figure most people here would rather look at them then the standard bowl of fruit shot anyway. :)

You can follow along with the documentary at escapetothemusic.com and if you liked the footage, drop tiffany a line at tiffany@crspirits.com. She's amazed that someone from out of town would be interested in a little dance team in Iowa. Every time I show her the website stats she can't believe the hits she gets from outside of Iowa.

But anyway, enjoy the footage. Hopefully the compression doesn't muck it up too bad.

Here's the link

The original video looks awesome! I'm sure the compression is going to make it much less so.

Thanks for posting. Really nice images. I like the strong backlight. It was a good decision to give more character to the small space.

I would like to see a file on a Blu-ray or to put in a editor to make a true asessment.

Thanks much Kevin, the footage looks outstanding even online and I appreciate the range of imagery you were able to show us - even better than that bowl of fruit! I think I'm sold.
