Panasonic's consumer "P2" cam...

Check this out, from Camcorderinfo.com:
http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Panasonic-Announces-SDR-S100-SD-Recording-3-CCD-Camcorder.htm

It's the SDR-S100 camera, a new 3-CCD camera that records onto off-the-shelf SD cards. Same P2-style workflow, but using regular SD cards. It uses MPEG-2 to fit enough record time onto a card (100 minutes on a 2gb card in the lowest-quality mode).

It's tiny, it's tapeless, and it's cheap ($1199 for 3-CCD). Don't know anything about it other than what the article says, but 3-CCD and tapeless seems like it might pique some consumer interest!

JVC has something similar going on with their Everio line, I don't know if they share the same format or not, I don't know anything about the Everio...

... I'm impressed. That is soooo 'film-like!'

I think the point here is why the hell can't SD cards like that be used for hvx man! Also i wasn't able to find anything about continuous recording on p2. Can you eject one p2 card while recording AND continue recording onto second card without any brakes? Anyway i think two 4gb cards are better than one 8gb.

Yeah dmitriandsnow, why the hell hasn't this been talked about here. What's up with the cost of P2 anyway?

What would a mini/micro35 look like on one of these things? Can I put a follow focus on it too?

The super-fast ones, like the Sandisk Extreme III, could maybe theoretically be adapted, because they have a supposed minimum write speed of like 18 megabytes per second. So someone just has to nag Sandisk or Lexar or someone into making an SD-to-P2 adapter card...

Most definitely. You can hot-swap 'em all day long if you want.

ALl these questions have been asnwered before..

the speed of one SD card isn't enough to support the data-rates required to record HD.. you have ot have 4 cards in paralell (RAID) configuration.. thats what a P2 card is.
And yes P2 does have continuous recording... when one card gets full, it automatically continues on teh next card...it doesn't even set the "end of clip" marker untill you actually stop recording (after an infinate number of cards) so that when you import this clip from your group of P2 cards, it will appear as one clip in your NLE.. fity.

And P2 cards cost $2000 for the 8GBs, the others are cheaper, there is more info on Panasonics website.

..and yes, tehre are beeing accesories made for the HVX, like the mini35 - and the HVX allready has a connector for remote focus control. (this was allready announced at NAB 5 monthes ago.)

I'd strongly sugest reading the "News" thread...

When I saw "P2" and "consumer" in the same sentence, I was preparing to say NEVER - unless they are billionaires, but this could fly. Someone needs to produce a hard drive player that will download all those holiday videos straight from the SD card and have a nice pretty interface to recall all your old videos.

what happens if you are in the middle of a shot and run out of room on a p2 card?does the clip lose any info or does it look like a seamless transition from one card to the next?

On this SD camera, I doubt it's a possibility. On a real P2 camera (like the SDX or HVX) the camera will seamlessly split the clip across cards.

They should have this P2 dammit!
Everything should be made P2! That way the cost could sink more rapidly.
Oh well, at least we can use them untill the end of times... :)
