Panasonic When it Counts Roadshow

Put me down as another one who will be extremely disappointed if the af-100 is over 6K. In fact, it's a deal-breaker for me. Way NOT to go, Panasonic. I'm worried that Panny seem to emphasize 3D over affordable cameras for filmmakers. I think they're shooting themselves in the foot. I don't give a hoot about 3D and I don't personally know any indie filmmaker who is interested in shooting 3D (some probably exist, but I don't personally know them) - but on the other hand, I do know several for whom going over 6K on the af-100 is going to mean not buying the af-100 and making do with DSLRs and cheaper solutions. Panny, remember which side your bread is buttered on!

just want to reiterate that it was a very quick statement made by a marketing guy - so i dont know how valid the under 10K figure was - but it was certainly said

I'm in the same boat as Justyn, Will, and OldCorpse. Right now I'm scrambling to save up $6000 (about a year's apt rent for me) by year end for the AF-100. But if it's going to be closer to $10K, then I'm throwing in the towel.

It's time to retire my DVX, and I'd like its successor to be an HD camera that has interchangable lenses without the need for a 35mm adapter + rail system (which in my experience on various sets is cumbersome, prone to odd glitches, and is IMO rediculously expensive) , so if the AF-100 is out of reach I'll be picking up a DSLR.

If they originally announced around 6k i can't believe it would have jumped 4K. Usually they announce high and then B&H and everybody else for that mater cuts the price by 20% and we get a reasonable street price.

I will say i was talking to our local Rep (southeast) and they where quick to tell me the GH1 (i was telling them how much i enjoyed shooting with it) was out of a different devision. So it is posable that the AF-100 is sort of a cross devision project and the broadcast guys see it as a digital cinema camera (at $9K) and the consumer devision see it as the top of the line up of the hmc40/80/150 (at $5K)

One thing is for sure it will be interesting.

Panasonic's suggested list price is usually over the actually price the camera sells for. When the HPX300 came out, it started at $9k but after a bit of time, it went way down. I remember a quote of $7k flat for one, and thats without the $700 rebate and free P2 cards. Give it time, it will be under $6k after a little while.

AF100 would be worth 10k if the HD-SDI is output before any AVC compression, and the OLPF is optimized for 1080p. You'd have to budget in a nanoflash as well, but it'd still be worth 10k.

Gotta tell ya...

"Under 10K" isn't a deal breaker for me. I have 3 shoot days this week with 3 different clients, (using 2 HVX 200's) and so far the first two have remarked that "It's great to see professional equipment" ... and... "The last guy used a little camera like I have at home".

Since each of these shoot days (this week) would pay for the new AG 100 whatever the cost with or without lenses isn't a problem. Panasonic is targeting this camera at a price-point and filmakers who do commercial work.

My opinion.

Yep, a kitted out HVX package is still more than impressive to most people.

For 10k it enters a new league with both 2/3 Scarlets (with and without lens) on the mix that can do 4k at variable frame rates and shoot REDRAW codec!

Stating the reality, both Scarlets only loses on DOF and cheaper recording media against the Panasonic camera.

If AF100's hits the market at USD 6k is a no brainer for me too. It's about 4500 Euro here and I already have a bunch of Nikon lenses, but if it goes up to 10k or something similar I think I'm going to buy a RED for the first time... They even promised it to deliver later this year (even if nobody really believes their schedule statements anymore!)

What RED are you going to buy in December? When did they say Scarlet was delivering in 2010?

<$10k doesn't mean I'm not still interested, but I will be expecting $4k of improvements over what was originally spec'd. I mean, $4000 more than my 7D rig is reasonable just for the HDSDI and XLR improvements. But $8000 for those features...not even close to being "worth it."

For $4,000 more there should be P2 and AVC Intra. You can buy an AG-HPG20 P2/AVC Intra recorder for not much more than that.

Yeah, but if it started at under $6K as they originally said, then it would go down below $5K.

You mean, if they made your improvements since they announced the AF100 and its price? Otherwise, they'd just be jacking up the price without adding any value. As for the HD-SDI, what would be the point of going that route with a heavily compressed 8-bit image when HD-SDI supports 10-bit 4:2:2? And you can assume the OLPF was already optimized for 1080p, as Jan Crittenden said the AF100 was optimized for video and wouldn't exhibit aliasing and moire like the GH1 (or at least not as bad).

I think that not even then it would worth that kind of money! You will be adding about USD 3000 to an already 10k camera! RED One cost 17k some years ago! Nowadays I assume that it would cost much less than that!
