I am at the panasonic "when it counts" roadshow now - about to begin - Ill post updates, news etc in this thread

I just got back, I went to the morning session. Its really interesting. I did feel they were pushing the AVCCAM line way more then they pushed the P2 line. It seemed like they explained how great AVCCAM is compared to MPEG-2, then used that to kinda say, "Look, we put that great format into a 3D camera!". Granted, the 3D camera was really nice, and I like the way they situated the controls on the body, but its internal recording format is lacking. They did kind of solve it by giving it uncompressed HD-SDI out for each eye, but that just adds more expense.

They got some really interesting stuff going on.

interesting look at hcm product line - the hcm150 been around for awhile - hcm40 very small - then hck-10 recording device paired with a lipstick cam

ag-hcm80 - camera for non tech users - 1/43cmos - out in sept for 2300 with prof audio ins

ag-af100 - 4/3 inch imager 4/3 exchangable lens - we all saw this for nab

obviously positioning this as the first dlsr that is a video cam first

with variable framerates
zebras
vectorscope
hdsdi out

price - under 10K

3d cam has fixed inter distance of 50 mm. Makes it simpler but needs subject to be 8 to 10 ft away

thats alarming people who was told its under 6k last april...

Was just hands on with 3d cam. First gotcha is Iris and convergence are same wheel with toggle switch next to it

Easy to set convergence but would be very hard to track with it

Zoom is smooth but very sluggish probably cause of servo sync of lenses

Can you or do you want to track with convergence? I thought that was a complete no-no.

The Iris and convergence on the same wheel can be very frustrating. You kind of get used to it. We've done a bunch of shoots with it, and you eventually get a feel for it, but in the heat of the moment (we do a lot of wildlife stuff) it can be easy to forget whether or not you are set to convergence or iris.

If the AF100 is just under 10K with no lens that's a major deal breaker for me and probably a lot of people. I'll just hobble along shooting with a DSLR and have 8k left in the bank... If that's the case, it'll also mean that I'll just wait for the Scarlet whenever that comes about cause now we are talking about the same kind of money to get one of those Super 35mm packages... Very distressing if it's going to be as high as that.

Justyn, I couldn't agree more. That price plus AVC HD recording (rather than something more robust) mean I am not picking up the AF100.

They were really, really pushing the AVC HD format today. Having just worked with the HMC40 for a while, I will be happy to never shoot it again. Long record times are great, transcoding to Pro-Res to edit is not. And forget about color correction or grading - there's just not much to work with.

I have to say I was pretty underwhelmed today, because of the AF100 and because they spent so much time talking about 3D. I know this has been discussed to death elsewhere, but I am just not interested in 3D acquisition until they can figure out how to deliver it without the glasses. It's very cool, but it's just not going to be viable with the stupid glasses.
