Heinz commercial: 3250 Miles, 1 year, and a big bag of cash

All right, it is now officially official. My Heinz commercial contest entry, "3250 Miles", has been announced as one of the ten semi-finalists in the Top This contest! That means I edged out over 2000 other entries, which is an honor in its own right. Please go to this page. There's a lot of good entries, I think you'll agree, and it will be a real contest for sure.

For those of you who don't know, to produce this commercial, Jesse and I actually did travel the 3250 miles (actually, closer to 3900) on and off the beaten path between Los Angeles and Boston, with some major detours in between. Along the way we found a great many curiosities of Americana, many of which we sadly could not include in this thirty second piece. I owe a great deal to the many kind and sympathetic people we encountered along the way, without whom this product would have been impossible. I also owe special thanks to Austin Wintory for the beautiful music; Jesse Vigil for being my constant traveling companion and Murphy's Pub drinking buddy; Todd Belcher for his exceptional voice talents; and Lauren Holt for not only doing some on-the-spot line producing upon our arrival in Pittsburgh, but also for kindly providing us with warm beds. And now, almost a year after we started this long voyage, all of those efforts have paid off!

The contest runs for three weeks and the winner is solely determined by popular vote.

To answer in advance some of the questions: this was shot on an HVX200 with a RedRock M2 in 720p on just two 4gb P2 cards. This is not the most ideal setup in the world when you are the one and only crew member, but with perseverance it can be done!

I voted for ya...Bitter sweet as a contestent my self... Good Luck

Not a finalist, I hope! I mean, I'd appreciate the gesture, but even I learned in 5th grade that you always end up losing by one vote if you don't vote for yourself! :)

In the top ten so far. That's wicked.
Good luck and if you win I'd like an autographed bottle of Ice Vodka please. Thank-ya-kindly.
//Maybe a signed bottle of Heinz AND vodka.

Ice Vodka is made from icebergs. It's smooooth.
You don't have to send me one if you win, just kidding about that.
Good luck Doug. I'm sure that cash would buy some nice equipment.

I'm sure that cash would buy some nice equipment.

Actually, it would pay off my debt and allow me to start concentrating on finishing my film! A dream come true, in short. Although some of the equipment around here is feeling a little broken lately...

dougspice... well done! Great commercial! As I was watching it the 2nd time, (I have watched it several time since!), I was wondering if you had some fellow dvxusers shoot some of the location specific shots. VERY COOL to hear that you shot it all!

Sounds like a great trip!

Great job and GREAT VO work!

Good luck to you.

Heh, probably would have been smarter to do it that way... but this was the fastest way to make sure it all felt like a single piece. Still, an 8-day shooting schedule on a 30 second spot isn't the pinnacle of efficiency. :)

A nice side effect of this whole saga is that this is finally convincing my friend (and business partner) Jesse to finally finish his documentary about American roadside attractions that he's been working on for over two years. He went with me on the shoot and we grabbed a couple interviews and landmarks for his shoot along the way as well. Some VERY interesting people out there on the backroads of America!

So Doug. The winners are up. I'm not sure if they are listed in order or not.
What's your word on it?

//Ah sht man. Just located the list.

My word on it is... some of the winners were worthy, some were not, either way I didn't make the list. Oh well, onward and upward!

Thanks for checking in. Sorry, no vodka this time!

Seriously? THAT ONE won?

Well great job on the video anyway Doug, yours was awesome.
