looking at your footage really proves that all the D90 needs is a higher bit-rate to get very good 35mm film-like results. jello, shutter speed etc are all controllable with a bit of effort but the bit-rate/codec is the one limiting factor we can't get around. If Nikon had only of adopted the codec of the 5D it would be amazing.

These are exactly my thoughts because of the type of projects I need it for. Now, I wonder if increasing the bitrate on the D90 would cause it to overheat even faster? In other words, why would Nikon limit the bitrate that much?

i don't think so. the live view image isn't much better than this. just zoom into the live view and see for yourself. it simply lacks definition. higher bitrate would definitely be nice but it's not what causes the soft image. now a higher quality debayer and noise reducer, that would be something.

From what I've heard, it's the LCD...but I could be wrong?

no, you've heard that it's the live view, which it is, and misinterpreted that as if they meant the lcd (and we're back to the important of stringency again, but i've given up on that one).

Smaller Sensor is Good

Smaller Sensor is Good

Sorry if this has been hashed out already, but...

I see some advantage to having the smaller sensor of the GH1.

Greater DOF. I wonder how many Red/MkII owners wish they could get MORE dof, MORE things in focus in lower light environments? I know.. no no no - we want it as shallow as possible!

Many crave the full frame shallow DOF, but in so many situations its a nightmare to focus. It's something that makes me reluctant to just bust out my HVX/M2 just anytime (besides it weighing a ton and mechanically retarded).

Having seen 1000s of videos from adapters and the 5DMkII, so much of it is egregiously out of focus due to A) people going for as shallow DOF as possible because it "looks so gorgeous" or B) there's not enough light so everything is wide open to prevent going to high ISO and introducing tons of noise C) they aint hiring pro focus pullers, measuring distances, critically blocking actor movement, and marking for focus pull.

If you have your focusing fully under control at all times, sweet, but that's a LOT of work and super hard to do with a small crew, solo, and run and gun.

This was reiterated when I saw the comparison footage between the 5DMkII and the 500D.

Very subjective, but I grow tired of seeing super shallow DOF all the time, and it can be really difficult to work with.

holy, i don't understand your complain. i always stop down my DSLR if i want a deep DOF. but i cannot open up the aperture of my video cam as much to achieve shallow DOF. large sensor all the way. :)

HolyShi$....... Holyzoo could that be you. Back from the dead. It's been years since I've seen you here.
Hello and welcome back!

i wonder what this will f*cking do.

Pappas! Yes indeed - Holy Zoo lives. The DSLRs are bringin me back! Or is it the VDslrs that are infecting us - an evil alien plot. Or I suppose we can call it HDSLRs or whatevers. I do remember this all starting on the Alternative Imaging board with enterprising inventors sayin "I don't get it! CMOS sensors everywhere and none capturing HD video! Let's hack these things!" Well here we are - we have HD video capture on these commercial digicams and man are we ANGRY about it!!

Hahaha!

I recently rented the D90 to cut in as specialty footage along with 4 other HVXs/HPXs. And I used that all over the shoot and got "that look" without the retardo adapter hassle. Was it gorgeous? Very. Did I get covered in jello? Often. But sometimes I even used the jello footage to effect because the music was metal-liquid-like anyway. But a monopod cured most of that issue. Was tempted to buy it, but the image is soft, the jello is a joke, and popping out of AE lock is a$$holio.

I'm hoping for the GH1, although I'll be selling most of my Nikon glass - 6 lenses. Or I'll just give in to temptation and buy the 5DMkII - I'm renting one tomorrow to try it out.

About the large sensor and stopping the lens down - yes, that's the way. But is it always possible in low light? And without getting a bunch of noise from the ISO goin south on you? Or what if you want to stop down AND get some faster shutter in lower light? I'll know more about that on the 5DMkII tomorrow.

I just never hear people openly admit that on the other end of the spectrum there is such a thing as too shallow DOF, instead of too much.

Dude, that's so Gregg Toland. Don't you know that look went out with the 40's...

Omg that film must suck with all that DOF. What idiot made this film............ ;-D

Great point about dof! Now all of you to out and shoot a feature with a naked hvx or A1. Better yet, shoot a feature.
