Panasonic S1H Announcement Tuesday, August 27th

Yup, he said they still see high value in that form factor and plan to "continue to aggressively develop M43" (his words, in an interview w/Zacuto on the S1H).

They wouldn't close their MFT business over night anyway...of course they will continue selling these products. They need a few years to ease out if they do. They have a roadmap.

I haven't seen any indication of Panasonic backing away from MFT, but I've seen lots of speculation that FF is suddenly going to replace everything else, which seems ludicrous to me.

Companies wouldn't tell you; if anything they would say the opposite to not hurt their stock (unless they can't lie in a situation). I imagine Panasonic has been making products these last few years to release them last year and this year and next year...now is not the time to signal any change.

It's not that serious anyway, and I also don't think they will stop right this minute. But I'm not sure about 2025.

I don't know...it's too difficult to predict.

Ask Google or Apple, they probably know.

NorBro is right. Though I will say in my armchair experience, most companies tend to stay mum when they are planning to roll off of a line, not go out of there way to express enthusiastic sentiment regarding it. 2025 is an eternity away in camera gear.

Regardless, I actually think the future of MFT is bright... FF offers some advantages today, but just look at what these little tiny phone camera sensors are doing. I think it stands to reason that M43 sensors will reach 15 Stops of DR and clean ISO 12,000 with an organic image, and at that point things sort of plateu and the size/weight advantages may actually swing the tide back in favor of SMALLER. Just speculating here, but we might get sort of pendulum effect here at least on the more prosumer end of the spectrum, which I believe is favoring FF temporarily due to the IQ/Noise benefits. They'll always have the lead with more surface area... but there is a point where the practical benefits of that lead diminish.

Frankly if Panasonic can do something to make the GH6 look as good as a Pocket 4k, with the lowlight of the 5S, and the usability of an S1H - all in that tiny package - that pendulum swing may arrive even earlier for some...

Love the S1 but the GH5 and native lenses are gloriously lightweight.

Samsung categorically denied they were getting out of the photo-video camera business.

That said, MFT has a long ride ahead of it. It's just more likely than not to be in the entry level of cameras, replacing sensors that would typically fit inside the smartphones.

As to "GH-6", it'd have to compete with Pocket4K, which records Raw and will be priced at $1,000 within a couple of days. Panasonic would have to do a pretty major spec-buster to take the limelight away. 8K, compressed Raw to CFexpress cards? That may start a conversation.

Good continous auto focus would be a draw for a lot of people. 4k 120 fps as well. All that with IBIS

Well, that's just the thing. Pocket4K doesn't have a very good auto focus system and neither does GH-5 (one can argue which is better or worse ... OK, GH-5 is better by a shade). Take those variables out and BMD has the lead with Raw.

There is misunderstanding about what I meant by, "With the S1 Panasonic has torpedoed M43." I didn't mean they would drop it, stop supporting it. It's my feeling it happens from the other side, that people stop buying it. By creating a new video top tier in mirroless, Panasonic have torpedoed M43 in the sense that buyers will see the future in terms of the full frame format and skip M43. That's how it dies. I agree, Panasonic's commitment to M43 is solid. I have the GH5 and GH5s. I use both professionally and they remain in my plans.

We will have to see how it all plays out. I love FF for still shooting and it is good for bokeh monster SDOF interviews but beyond that, prefer M4/3rds for general use money making video work. But, it needs to be better than the GH5 which is a bit ISO limited. A strong GH6 will make the decision between the two difficult for many, which is Panasonic's best play imho. Get the sale either way...

One mention of interest from Matt in the Zacuto interview part 6 was the feature of having multiple monitoring LUTs available.

He said he has seen filmmakers use False Color LUTs to gain that feature, as well as a punchy B/W contrast LUT to help assist with critical focus peaking. I appreciated those creative use mentions as I hadn't thought of using the multiple monitoring LUTS in that way, but I absolutely plan to try this!

And official from Panasonic now as well:

6k 30 / 4K 60 RAW. Nice.
I hope Atomos adds support for S1H RAW to their 7-inch monitors like the Shogun Inferno, Ninja Inferno, and Shogun 7 at some point, although all of these initial releases only mention the Ninja V.

Now that Blackmagic is getting into the external RAW recorder market with their Video Assist HDR line, I wonder if they have any plans to add additional camera support to their new recorders. Given that they just released a Blackmagic RAW plugin for Premiere and Avid (in addition to the existing support in DaVinci Resolve) it seems like BRAW now has more extensive NLE support than ProRes RAW does.

Since BMD also makes cameras - or primarily makes cameras, if you like - they might get cooperation from the EZ Cam types independent but not from the major manufacturers, who have their own codecs and their own cameras up the wazoo. Atomos is a "recorder only" company, so there's no cannibalizing threat from them.
