Panasonic Removable Lens Four Thirds HD AVCHD Camera

...more footage. Includes dogs, lake, daylight footage, night footage. Actually quite good.

WANT :love4:

Even with the YouTube compression, I really, really liked this. This photographer's taste is similar to mine (something that probably matters much more than people admit). Technical analysis of YT footage is pointless, I'll just say that that it more than met my expectations, and exceeded them in the case of the night footage. I was able to lose myself in the subject matter easily, which is what counts (had to go back and watch it 4 times because I kept getting distracted from the technicalities by my enjoyment of the imagery).

Interesting to note that this was shot with the stock lens too. That f/4 minimum doesn't seem to be killing it as some people feared. I'm sold.

I guess we'll get full confirmation from users soon enough, but it looks like no 1/48. The manual doesn't list every shutter speed, but it does have this image on page 52.

GH1_ss.jpg

If you want an explanation of what this chart is all about, you can look at the G1 manual on page 48 where there's an explanation in English

That may be why people keep thinking "video". If there's nothing between 1/30 and 1/60 then it explains it well.

I hope there's some sort of 1/50 or close!

thanks for that, my heart just restarted

after all the stupid camera crippling going on over the last 6 months for a minute I thought "here we go again"

We'll know conclusively in a few hours, but:

Concerning the likelyhood of the GH1's HDMI port supporting "live" full-time HD video out ...

IMHO ...

As much as I really, really, _really_ hope the GH1's HDMI port supports live full-time uncompressed HD video out, based on everything I've read, there's unfortunately probably less than a 50% chance it'll be able to do this. Maybe even less than a 25% chance. :embarasse

Why not: Unless the GH1's new, relatively large Live MOS sensor and Venus Engine HD dual-core processor are _unusually_ powerful, cool-running & energy efficient, it seems unlikely they can capture ~12MP motion video _and_ compress it down to 17 megabits/sec 1920x1080 AVCHD or M-JPEG HD video _and_ support the cam's live view viewfinder & LCD _and_ write the data out to a SDHC card _and_ support the GH1's hundreds of other functions ... _and_ output live full-res HD out its HDMI port -- all at the same time.

Actually, it's possible (after all, anything's possible, right?) the components in the GH1 _could_ do all that, except: Given the cam's small size and available electrical power supply, the GH1's design as it exists today almost certainly can't allow enough heat management to cope with such a heavy workload. If the GH1 was physically bigger & had enough electrical power available to run an on-board liquid cooling system, then it might be able do all of the above all at once. Other cams which feature full-time live full-res uncompressed HDMI outputs are either much bigger devices, or have much smaller image sensors, or have fewer/different features/specs, or cost significantly more -- or some combination of these.

Also why not: The GH1's public documentation doesn't seem to indicate the cam supports live full-time HDMI output. Playback, playback, playback is all it seems to say.

Further also why not: To the best of my knowledge none of the people who've bought or laid hands on a Japanese market GH1 have conclusively confirmed it, unfortunately.

Further further why not: Politics. Do you really think Panasonic wants to sell a ~$1,500 cam which sports a feature list which rivals (and in some cases surpasses) its more expensive products? It's not Panasonic's fault, it's just business.

But don't get me wrong: On the other hand, if the GH1 _can_ do full-time live uncompressed HDMI video out, well then as you know all holy heck will break loose!!!

Because: See related (these are just a few examples):

I'm praying that at the very least the GH1 can output full-time live high-quality "VGA" resolution video for monitoring & focus. Even clean live SD composite video would be better than nothing, but barely.

So, for the next several hours at least, everyone please pray for full-time live HDMI (or other) video output from the GH1!!!

Having said all that, even if the GH1 doesn't support any kind of live full-time video out, based on the video samples we've seen so far I think the GH1 is still an amazing cam which will be very useful for many, many types of productions.

Not being able to do live hi-res monitoring during preview & recording will be a pain in the *ss, but survivable, primarily because the GH1 has an outstandingly hi-res 1.44MP viewfinder & pretty good LCD screen. I can't wait to start playing -- err -- working with one myself!

P.S.: Be careful what you wish for: There have been reports that the video S/N performance of a certain other high-end HD-capable DSLR gets noticably worse as the cam heats up during use. Sometimes leaving out a feature or two in a product's design can result in a cooler-running device and improved video quality!

P.P.S.: Just to make this post as circular as possible ... :-)

Glad it does 1/50.

Footage I've seen so far is looking really really nice. It is actually looking better than I expected. The daytime clips I've seen really shine in terms of nice rich saturation. Of course we don't know what picture settings that most clips were shot using, so who knows the range this thing will have for some nice in camera tweakage or for more flat image characteristics for post manipulation?

The only thing that is a bummer for me is that the workflow for FCP is longer and drawn out in terms of bringing footage in, converting and removing pulldown, and storage space with the ProRes files. Still though, the image quality from this thing might be worth it. I'm really liking what I'm seeing so far.

And it would be nice to have an option to buy just the body without the zoom. Some users will already have a ton of lenses and could save some cash by having that choice.

hi Kubalski, I read someone else posting that they couldn't access English menus on the Japanese model. Could you tell us if this is the case? I mean, maybe that poster could not access it because, well, you would need to know Japanese to find the language option, OR the camera actually doesn't allow you to do that.

If it can be changed, I need to find a Japanese friend that is planning a round trip back home...:)

yes, The one out here is "Japanese Only" The shop staff told me I might be able to get the English version in Akihabara for a few hundred dollars more. Akihabara in case you dont know is an area of electronic stores that foreign tourists often go to therefore they have foreign models of Japanese Only products too. I havent confirmed that the English version is available there yet. Seeing as it wont e out overseas for another two months I'm wondering whether Panasonic would let the English version be sold here yet.

Nice. Does anyone know how long europe has to wait for the release, btw? Sorry if this has been discussed before. I ran a search and found nothing.

EDIT: Never mind, June it is.
