GH4 Panasonic GH5 coming in 2017

I am hoping someone - Atomos Odyssey SmallHD Aputure DJI - anyone - comes up with something like the SmallHD502 size/build quality with the Infero like specs in terms of ability to record and monitor. Inferno is great, but having it in a small 5.5" iPhone + SSD sized (ala SmallHD 502) form factor and build quality would be amazing. Those things are just too bulky for true run'n'gun work.
maybe in 2017? not a long wait with technology going so fast these days

Knowing and using Shogun 1 with the GH4, the Shogun is not only a wonderfull monitor but also a great recorder. And I would not ask for a smaller monitor size, especially not for the Shogun Inferno since this unit allows also a HDR preview and is helpfull to assess the picture.

The record for the Speedbooster makes me more unhappy. Means that for existing speedboosters at least a firmware update is required, if existing Speedboosters can be used at all.

I think this only affects the EF mount adapters since they have to communicate electronically with the camera. The Nikon mount version I think are fine. Users can get an image just no communication between the lens and body which is something I don't believe the Nikon version does anyway. If one uses Rokinon lenses I don't think they have anything to worry about since those are a complete passive mount anyway.

Yes! The tech is there, overdue even, but I think this may be the year for it. *fingers crossed*.

The irony of it is that when (if) it finally arrives all of the cameras will be shooting 10-bit 4:2:2 internally.

It would have been great a few years ago...or at least last year for something like an A6300.

Small and mountable right under the camera via 1/4-20 like a grip or some of those audio preamps/boxes.

Pop in a CFast card or something else and you're good to go.

Pester Metabones, and hope that Panasonic gets a pre-release into their hands. As I use manual Nikon mount lenses, I'll fret over something else, like my cage not fitting. ;-)

But cages will follow ASAP since they are "simple" to design and make, so no big worry there. You could always use a generic for a short time while you wait.

Back to the lenses... If the metabones no longer works, then won't the "old" native lenses stop functioning too? You would think the data would all be the same.

Funny you mention that as with the hotshoe/audio set up, how would that work with a cage?

Get me a camera and audio adapter and I'll show you. It's just metal and not an insurmountable issue. Probably easier to solve than a programming issue. That said the solution may not be pretty, but I have little doubt that a solution will be fairly easy to obtain and may only require a redesign of the top plate. I would envision a "loop" of metal either in front of the hot shoe or behind the hot shoe to provide structure to reinforce the top plate and possibly provide mount points for a handle. But a handle might be an impractical addition once this is really in the design phase. Might need to go to a pair of tubes (15mm) for a handle mount, and then the handle could tie the top plate halves together.

The use of stronger materials like steel or stainless might also be employed to solve this as they can be much thinner to provide the same rigidity. A carbon fiber plate might be a good idea for strength, light weight, and rigidity.

It continues to surprise me that Panasonic doesn't design and manufacture a cage for these cameras. Many people buy one for their camera, why not reap the profits from selling the officially designed device. Kind of the same feeling with the lens adapters, they know how people are using them, what kinds of mounts are popular, so why not sell an official PL, EF, Nikon, etc. Maybe even take it a step farther and produce boosters. I know they want to sell their own lenses, but there is money to be made and who better to know the flange distance specs. and other features needed for these adapters. They make mounts for most popular things for the Varicams, they have the information in house and certainly have the design engineers to do it.

Because there are no profits in it for a company like Panasonic. Even it there was money in it, the margins are so small, it would be of no interest to Panasonic executives, who are currently trying to figure out how to remain profitable with the businesses they are already running.

Would be great but how can one know?

The GH5 is going to be a big seller this year. It would be insane for Metabones to not produce compatible products for the GH5, though who knows it might mean buying new adapters if things can't be fixed via firmware updates.

Yea, they will no doubt support the camera. Even with a new adapter, which is probably better for them anyway.

A couple of cage manufacturers came up with good solutions for the Sony a7 series cameras. I use one with my a7s by Movcam and it doesn't use the hotshoe for stability and it works just fine. No lateral movement. The ability to have phantom powered XLR connectors running off the internal batteries, in my view is essential for the way I work. Also the GH5 has an external HDMI connection cable that will bolt directly to the camera so the need for a cage is greatly reduced or at the very least you can take the cage off when you want or need to be shooting with a stripped down rig.

I'm hoping they come out with a new Speed Booster adapter that incorporates the locking collar seen on their new EF to E mount adapters, and is optimised for the full sensor use with IBIS etc.

Cheers,

Paul :)

Hi Paul,

I thought I've read somewhere that both the Speedbooster Ultra and the XL still work with the GH5. Just like they did with the GH4 and GH3. As the GH5 will have no extra crop, so a crop factor of 2.0x in 4K mode, the Speedbooster wil give the same image as a GH3 or GH4 in 1080p mode. Myself, I'm using the Nikon versions so I expect no problems there. The only thing I'm unsure about is the electronic connection when using Canon EF lenses.

About IBIS, will that introduce an extra 'crop' you think?

Yes, I think they will work once they update the firmware :) I think the IBIS might cause related vignetting on some lenses, or possibly Speed Booster vignetting on the XL. Not sure as I haven't tried one obviously ;)

For now I'm sticking with my regular EF - M43 Speed Booster to ensure coverage and nice corner performance.

My comment was mostly related to having a locking collar update, which helps stop the lens rotation as it gets more firmly held in place. I'm used to this from the Red Epic so it would be a good feature to have on cinema productions with the GH5.

Cheers,

Paul :)
