GH4 Panasonic GH5 coming in 2017

Playback in PP CC17 timeline was choppy for me too until I changed the viewer quality from 50% to 100%, then playback was fine. Applied LUTS in Lumetri panel played back in realtime too.

For some reason Premiere Pro has a hard time playing the GH5 10-bit 422 footage at 50% quality. Maybe it's a glitch that will be resolved with an update.

Couple other interesting points I learned from the GH5 leaflet:

1. With the audio adapter the GH5 does support 24bit audio and 96khz. One more nail in the coffin of external audio recorders. We only need to see how good the pre=amps are and of course many external recorders can do multiple channels or safety tracks which is nice.

2. Ex-tele mode will work with 4k video so you can still get the 1:1 crop of the sensor kind of like we have on the GH4. Why would you want to? To match a GH4 or if the extra over processing Panasonic does with the full sensor isn't your cup of tea. Also gives you a little extra push in when you need the extra 1.4x reach. Think of it as a built in 1.4x telephoto adapter for 4k video.

3. 4k 60p 10bit HDMI output does shut off internal recording much like 4k 10bit does on the GH4. So if you want to record 4k 60p 10bit externally you will not be able to also record internally.

4. seems like 4k will be limited to 150mbps outside of the future update of 400mbps All-I. 150mbps so far from what I have seen is nice but it could be better. Don't sell your external 4k records yet if you want the highest possible quality.

An observation: People are downloading the GH5 test files and are reporting problems editing the test footage on almost all NLE systems. It begs the question - How are the folks like Griffin Hammond successfully editing their stuff? Are they running into the same problems? Do they have beast-mode systems or special beta versions of Avid, premeire or FCPX?

Also, this question keeps getting asked, but no one can confirm: HAS HDMI LAG TO EXTERNAL MONITORS BEEN ELIMINATED? This was not a small issue for pro film makers setting up tricky shots with quick focus pulls ext.

The 8-bit files work fine in FCPX. The 10-bit files ingest fine, stutter a bit on playback. All you have to do is transcode it to PRORES, which you do within FCPX very easily and is something I do even with the GH4 h.264 files. FCPX plays the 4K h.264 files from the GH4 fine, and you can do straight cuts with it. But any effects other than basic color correction really taxes the system. Transcode it and/or use proxy files (a one click process in FCPX) and I can add multiple effects to the footage without a frame hiccup. A great feature with FCPX is you can switch back and forth between using the original and proxy files on the fly via a simple viewer menu button. Also, when exporting, it uses the originals to render from so you get the highest quality output.

Yup, FCPX handles it as well as any other format. Leave native or transcode. 4k60P requires a BEEFY machine, but that's to be expected.

One wrinkle, the 10-bit footage won't play at all in the Quicktime viewer, it throws a movie could not be opened error. I suspect a Quicktime codec update will remedy that.

I hope the 4K@60p in H265 works natively to upload to YouTube. As far as I have seen the H265 4K from Samsung NX1 didn't work on YouTube..

View attachment 119834 2 thirds of stop better lowlight and DR

If that's true, then for me the choice is easy. Pass. My #1 complaint - and a big, big one - was the very poor low-light performance of the GH4. I have a lot of money sunk into m4/3 lens and accessories, so I was waiting for the GH5 to see what it brings to the table as far as my #1 complaint, low light. Less than a stop improvement is really completely inadequate. This is where I get off the Panasonic train and head for Sony. All the other bells and whistles are great, but if it doesn't do squat for my key requirement, it's time to look elsewhere. It's been a fun ride, but you need what you need - to each their own, everyone has their own requirements, so everyone's choice is legitimate. For me, the GH5 has not delivered, but YMMV.

Out of curiosity, what do you shoot that requires Sony level low light performance? A fast lens and 1600ISO allows one to shoot in a dimly lit room. The GH5 appears to handle that cleanly. (Which the GH4 does not.)

Why not wait to pass judgement when the camera comes out and is in its final version. The firmware isn't even completed yet on the camera samples out there. As to what he was referring to 2/3 of stop there were two questions asked in that chat and he didn't indicate which he was referring to or if he meant both. Also keep in mind judging an increase in sensitivity is subjective. Some people claim 2 stops, other 1 stop and now we have a 2/3. Kind of depends on the mood of the day and what you are shooting and what each person considers acceptable noise.

Don't care about 96khz, but 24 bit is pretty huge if the preamps sound decent and have a low enough noise floor. That would indeed go a long way toward bypassing external recorders. Having said that, I'm also still interested in the whether or not it can be extended off camera. Even with the cables tied off, the weight of xlr cables tugging on a hot shoe is definitely no bueno for daily professional use. That hot shoe will rip off for sure eventually. Could it be used on a cage, for example?
