GH4 Panasonic GH5 coming in 2017

Agreed. I'm not a fan of bumping up the pixel count on the GH5. Detail is something the GH4 rarely gets criticized for and many of us would have rather seen the two only real short comings of the camera addressed. Sensitivity and dynamic range. To be fair however the increase doesn't make a huge hit on the photo site size. 3.34 microns vs 3.6 microns. That little bit of difference should affect it too much and the sensor have greatly improved in other areas to pick up that slack and then some. If the GH5 did have a lower pixel count sensor the photo sites would have been 4.2 microns wide (to support DCI 4096) so not a huge amount better either. Still if that could increase a stop of sensitivity and DR I would take that for sure. Thats what we get for using a photo camera for video I guess.

A7S has photo sites 8.4 microns wide. The FF sensor itself has nothing to do with the sensitivity of the A7S. It is those behemoth sized photo sites.

I know the size of the photosites affect the dynamic range and low light capability, but do the two go hand-in-hand all the time?
In other words, do you usually get both at the same time or does the sensor have to be tuned for one over the other? If you choose to optimize for dynamic range do you get less low-light sensitivity and vice versa?
 
Have you ever tried auto exposure S, A or P or auto iso ?

Not on the dial. I never use the movie mode from the photo settings. Select M movie on the dial, then go into the menu and you can choose those options. When you choose them there, the info stays on the screen.
 
Thats what we get for using a photo camera for video I guess.

That's part of the reason I'd love to see BMD produce a 4K version of the Pocket Cam, something designed specifically as a cinema camera alone. Something that shoots DCI spec at 1:1 pixel count, but in a GH-sized body.

Dynamic range is literally (1) full-well capacity divided by (2) noise floor.

(1) Full-well capacity is how many photons a photosite can hold. You can increase it by (a) making bigger photosites or (b) by shrinking the circuitry that must be crammed into each photosite and takes up some of the room that otherwise would have been devoted to holding more photons.

(2) Noise floor is what also affects low-light sensitivity. Lower noise equals higher maximum ISO.


So if you attack dynamic range by lowering noise, then you also improve low light. If you add dynamic range simply by increasing full-well capacity, then low light is not improved. I don't know of any methods that improve dynamic range while hurting low-light sensitivity. But then again I am not an electrical engineer.
