GH2 Panasonic GH3 short film - Philip Bloom

All I could think of while watching this was the D800 release video "Joyride". So weird how similar the story lines are.

Watched the 1080 version this time and yes it still does look impressive to me.

The slow motion shot almost without a doubt looks like 1080p 60p which is pretty huge even if quality wise there isn't much difference between a hacked GH2. I could see upgrading just for that and the enhanced audio alone. Still noticed a bit of aliasing in the brick wall shots but is to be expected for this type of camera unless they sacrificed the stills quality. Still pretty darn good looking compared to other DSLRs. If it really does use AVC-LongG and 4:2:2 10bit I predict a massive amount of GH2's for sale on Monday.

Even with the 1080 Vimeo version it is still too early to tell how much better the raw recording will look compared to a decent GH2 hack. It is safe to say it will not be any worse and Bloom seems to be pretty happy with the native firmware and I kind of trust him when it comes to image quality. May not be Red yet but I think that gap is going to get a bit tighter.

I'm just simply stating that buying a gh3, out of the box or not, will NOT make you a better filmmaker. hell, it doesn't even make you anything but a person who just bought another camera. You know how many people on this forum have said "i can't wait till the next big camera comes out because it's exactly what i've been looking for." -- a lot. 20 to 1 odds, the majority of footage shot with the gh3 will be test footage of flowers and kittens.
And what camera out of the box makes one a better film maker? And of course there will be flowers and kittens. It's a consumer camera. But it's a camera that will likely have an edge on other cameras in it's price range. Power to the PUPPIES, KITTENS, and FlOWER film makers!!!!

If PB knew about the problem, then it's his failure not to shoot around it. And if he didn't learn about the problem until the shoot was over... well, that's another kind of fail.

I'm not saying this is the case Keylight, but it makes you sound a bit envious that Philip was asked to shoot this. I mean your throwing out such a minor little issue. I have some old glass that have flaws out the yin yang, And to be honest, if I thought a shot needed the look of a specific lens, I wouldn't hesitate to use it if it had a tiny little spec in my image because of it. Why, because i'm looking at the beautiful aspects of the lens, and willing to live with a minor flaw because the overall big picture is much more signifigant. Not to mention the avg viewer will never notice. I'm not trying to harsh on you, but I think your nit picking here.

Where do you get the idea that it is AVC-LongG and 10bit 422?

And to think that all the complainers are going to end up buying a GH3! It is too funny! The story repeats itself! Thank you Panasonic, because of you we can laugh a little!

For reals +1
Keylight? Whats the deal dude? It's just a dust spot in a preproduction camera.

It might be classified as a consumer camera, but it sure does look like a professional camera to me. I mean... we'll know more on Monday, but if it has add on XLRs then it's pushing the consumer envelop quite a bit. If anything it's more like a Prosumer camera from the consumer division, but who knows really what division it's from now? Yeah, the GH2 and GH1 were from the consumer division, but this is showing all signs of a product from the Pro division.

I've seen a similar problem on the AF100 when changing lenses in the dessert. The dust specs were incrediably small, & extremely hard to see with the naked eye, but caused the exact same flaw in the sky when the lens was set to a deep aperture.

Wow. I guess the value of my GH2 just went up since it is sharper and has an actual multi-sensor. Call me gobsmacked, I expected the noise and the moire to go away. Funny. Hope I'm wrong.

Just a guess because it would fit since we know the camera shoots 50mbits as well as the 72mbits Intraframe. The 50mbits fits and the timeframe fits for the GH3 to possibly be the first product to actually use AVC-LongG. Since Panasonic already has products that use AVC-Intra one kind of wonders where the AVC-LongG format would fit into their product line. Normal AVCHD does not support 50mbit or 72mbit I-frame so either Panasonic can use a format they developed for this type of product or make yet another odd H264 based format just for the GH3. Of course I don't know for sure and I'm sure we will all find out on Monday.

Not sure how you can tell all of that from a web video. Aliasing and moire will always be there because you have a large sensor scaling down to HD. Panasonic is much better at it then everybody else but it is still there in small amounts. If you want it 100% gone there are cameras out there for that. The reality is if you want to shoot film productions on a camera for less then $20,000.00 then there will be slight compromises. Not a single one of us can honestly judge the GH3 yet since we have not seen what it can do in person or seen a wider range of material. One production style will never ever match all of what a camera is capable of doing. Look how many different styles we have out there for the GH2 right now. Some people like to shoot softer and some prefer insane crispness. Some grade flatter and some crush blacks.

When the GH2 first was announced there was some of this same feeling about the GH1 hacked. To this day we still have a few people who actually prefer the look of the hacked GH1 over the GH2. That isn't to say the GH1 is better. I believe the GH3 will be similar. Some may hold out with their GH2 for awhile and think it is better. I think the extra features, the stuff other then what we see in a web video will be what really make the GH3 shine. I mainly upgraded from the GH1 to the GH2 based on features.

The biggest difference I'm seeing is the added smoothness of 24p motion cadence; No artifacts or intermittent judder anywhere, and I bet at 1/40, it will still be improved over the GH2. The color space and DR seem to be improved. I'm betting it's still 4:2:0, but some small part of me almost wants to believe this looks more like 4:2:2. It just has a certain richness in some frames that I'm not quite sure if the GH2 can do...

Overall in terms of pure iq improvements, there seem to be some very valid justifications for upgrading- just based on a short empirical look at Philips video. I would say the leap in IQ improvement is greater this generation than from GH1 to GH2... but it's probably way to early to be sure... and analyzing qualitative differences from a 720p compressed video isn't really ideal.

Not at all, but it is true that I think PB is s a bit overrated on these and other boards. But I understand why Panasonic asked him to be a part of this (see previous sentence). Of course, there's a lot of talent out there that can shoot great looking stuff, but they weren't just buying a guy who can shoot, they were buying the name.

If your assignment is show off the camera, then you shoot to avoid flaws, especially when they won't be in the production models. The video isn't a review, it isn't a "what's good, what's bad." It's one big PR piece. It's supposed to showcase the camera. Every shot needs to make the camera look good. They didn't do that. If I was the client, I would be unhappy with that flaw. But I guess Panasonic was fine with it, so I suppose I should be too.

Some way this short didn't impress me at all... Didn't like the lightning all to much and the video had some greenish filter in some scenes that really ruined it (hopefully this was done in post)... Not to meniton all the blocky and muddy parts..
And one more thing, what on earth is that pattern in the shadows through many parts of the clip, look at the bottom left corner at 2:40, this can be seen many times in the shadows... Never seen anything quite like that actually...

buy it, try it, dont like it, return.
its that simple.

i wish that was the case in my country but it is in the US.

i dont understand the complainers.

Andrew, do you realise that we've seen many amateur gh2 videos on vimeo with much much better image characteristics?
