GH2 Panasonic GH3 short film - Philip Bloom

You do realize this is a ~$1300 camera churning out very damn good results on par or exceeding current cameras at twice the price and over?

The big advantages this should have over any hacked cam are operational reliability and full warranty support.

They're trying to convince themselves that they don't need to buy one.

Quote of the thread.

And in the interest of full disclosure (although I'm sure none care) I'm getting one for sure. Because I have seen into the future and this is an absolute game changer for small camera video. And no, it will not be available in pink.

Maybe it is easier to speculate what they need in the GH4 or GH5:beer:

Not at all, but it is true that I think PB is s a bit overrated on these and other boards. But I understand why Panasonic asked him to be a part of this (see previous sentence). Of course, there's a lot of talent out there that can shoot great looking stuff, but they weren't just buying a guy who can shoot, they were buying the name.

If your assignment is show off the camera, then you shoot to avoid flaws, especially when they won't be in the production models. The video isn't a review, it isn't a "what's good, what's bad." It's one big PR piece. It's supposed to showcase the camera. Every shot needs to make the camera look good. They didn't do that. If I was the client, I would be unhappy with that flaw. But I guess Panasonic was fine with it, so I suppose I should be too.

Keylite, get over yourself dude. Who the heck are you to say anyone is overrated. In this industry, everyone deserves the success they're getting. Good luck to you with that attitude.

You're preaching conspiracy about a pre-production camera...seriously? as if the DP has anything to hide? There are plenty of forums for conspiracies. This isn;t one of them.

On specs alone, the GH3 is superior to the GH2. I;m placing a pre-order.

To the complainers of the PB/Bruce Logan video:
1. Most of the advantages of the GH3 over are likely not improvements you can identify on a compressed Vimeo image. Many of the improvements in the GH3 are workflow related. Timecode? XLR attachment? Higher bitrate without voiding warranty? Rugged, weather-sealed body? Battery grip?
2. 1080p/60, 720p/120. Isn't this what you wanted?
And here's a reply to the complaint that, frankly, pissed me off.
3. Complaining about a spec of dust on an image shot on a hot day in the desert on a pre-production model. The nerve to say PB dropped the ball because of this gets my blood boiling. Let's pretend it was you who shot this. You fly to California, are handed a pre-production model and a very brisk shooting schedule that involves driving to remote locations. Then, you have to set up a dolly and tracks in the desert sand and shoot a shot of a car speeding down the highway. The fact that PB didn't notice the spec of dust while operating a pre-production DSLR that he's had in his hands for probably mere hours...in the blinding sun...on a hot day...in the middle of nowhere...have you ever been on a video shoot like this? When the clock is ticking, the crew is small, the sun is hot and bright, and the equipment is not yours...of COURSE you wouldn't be able to spot a spec of dust!
And then the nerve to say this shot should have been thrown out, and that Panasonic is crazy for letting this image remain in a video that's promoting their camera. All I have to say is that that shot was sort of needed at that point in the story. Not that the short film is going to win any Academy Awards for screenwriting, but if the choice is a)use the shot necessary to show the guy driving away from the diner or b) lose it because it has a spec of dust, I guess PB chose option "a".

Bottom line is this: if a spec of dust on a pre-production model somehow prevents you from seeing the advantages this camera theoretically has over its predecessor, then by all means don't buy it.

Can someone tell me how people cannot criticize Philip Bloom now. I am not saying that it is always warranted but hearing some here it is like heresy. Every-time, someone has any type of criticism there is like a mob to defend him at all cost (I think the dust spot is not warranted at all for criticism). As any public person you face criticism and as he frequent these board I think that he can defend himself if need be. I did not see 2 people defend Bruce logan ASC while he was the one who directed it (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0517521/) and Philip Bloom DP some scene he wrote below.

"Written and directed by Bruce Logan, ASC (he shot Tron!) this film was designed to shoot in a number of scenarios to test out the camera. Harsh contrast, interior lighting, direct sunlight, low light, fast movement, handheld…we tried most things. I especially loved the much improved low light performance. The camera was operated by the terrific Terry Bowen and I did a lot of the handheld low light stuff… The arrest sequence, the subway and the taxi shots. That is the joy of small cameras, going and filming small and fast with limited light, but we also used this camera with a full crew as you can see from the credits below."

No worries Gary, I can always customize it for you with some little gems, and pink fur around the lens mount. :) We'll call it the the GHP (PINK)

I don't think anybody has an issue with criticism. The issue seems to be either unwarranted criticism or the fact that it gets a little mean and nasty. There's a thing called being polite or simple human decency that seems to get lost on forums like these. I've always laughed when reading people slamming somebody semi-famous on a forum...only to have that semi-famous person pop onto the forum and reply. The original slammer then backpedals and says "I wasn't trying to be mean, I just meant...please don't take it the wrong way, I..." etc. The point is, if you don't have the balls to say something to their face, then its best to adopt politeness and phrase your criticism constructively, politely, rather than sounding like a jackass. That's what I feel people are complaining about.

I'm not gonna attack anyone for disliking anyones style of DPing, we all have our favs, and most of our favs our ASC. Which means their all good, and I promise it wont be long before philip gets that status. He's already rubbing elbows with the right people. And it's because he's paid his dues. He's been shooting for around 20 yrs or so. He's been working hard, We all can see that. But on the other hand, if you feel he's overrated, well hey, thats your perogative. You have every right to express your opinion without being attacked by a Bloom fan boy.

The gh3 looks great, although I did see some terrible noise on the first promo vid where it was a night shot of some shirtless guys in the desert. That shot scared me, but I'm really hoping it was a very high iso. Because it was ugly.

I'm gonna grab one though. After thinking a lot about the black magic, and Philips in depth review, I was able to see it's not for me. It only has two factors that I like, Raw, and good dynamic range. Which leaves way to many other factors that I dont like. I think the form factor is a huge fail. And I'll be honest, at first I liked it. But the more I thought about how silly it really is, it's not a cam for me to own.

That's exactly my point. No one camera will make a person a better filmmaker. I think the Gh3 would probably make things easier. But give anyone a camera with a grain of talent, and they'll make something look nice. I kind of look at these new cameras as phones. A new one comes out every year and I'll just choose which one best suits me when my old one isn't doing the job anymore. If you don't have a Gh1, Gh2, Af100, BMCam, Scarlet, Mk2, Mk3, 7D, whatever Nikon is doing...then by all means, I encourage anyone to get a Gh3. I like the Panasonic brand over all the rest, but the Gh3 is just one more camera. I'm trying emphasize that it takes more than a really cool camera to make a good picture, story and production. I'm not a naysayer, I've had the Gh1 and will probably get the Gh3, but don't kid yourself by thinking that the Gh3 is the end-all camera.

You do realise you are judging it at 7 Mbit don't you? On a Vimeo stream?

Yes Andrew I do realise that, and that's why I'm going to pre order one in any case since I am pretty sure that this camera will be better than the current GH2 (hacked or not). But as mentioned I've seen much better videos with the same bitrate on vimeo with less mudd and blocking going on...

But one question still remains and that is what the heck that noise pattern is in the darks... Sure hope that it has to do with compression too!

Agreed. Take one look at the video below (shot on the D600) and tell me if you can see a quality difference on a compressed Vimeo (I can). This is the sort of video Panasonic should have commissioned, if the GH3 is even capable of producing anything similar. Not a silly chase story with contrived acting. I love my GH2, and I'm considering the GH3, but if I can get this sort of cinematic footage for only a bit more $...it's a hard sell for the Panny.

I'd like to think that Bloom is a good DP, I just don't think his done work that shows what much of the indie audience has expected (i.e. big time narrative feature stuff). He's always been on a pedestal, alone as such; as a DP, and I think that could be the reason. It sure will be great to see him pulling of some great narrative features and showing us what he really can do and what many of us can aspire to.

Gentlemen, let's return our attention and discussion to the short film and what it shows us about the GH3. This thread does not need any further commentary about topics outside of that.

That video has horrible noise in the scene with the animals in the background + a whole bunch of high quality time lapse pics that simply are not 1920x1080 original res.

Furthermore outside of a dirty lens that GH3 footage looks great, sure there was some noise in the dark but just relax. Look at those beautiful wide detail day time shots, breathtaking.... Can't wait to get my hands on the GH3!!

I watched the GH3 video first and thought it was fine. Not bad by any stretch; but nothing spectacular. Nothing took my breath away or even seemed cinematic, and I did notice the rolling shutter on the subway and some other weird banding and noise issues (which could easily just be the pre-production model, or a lack of attention in post).

But then I came across the D600 video and was blown away. That's the difference. I'm not conclusively saying the D600 is a better camera or a better purchase. But as far as promotional video goes, it should take your breath away, and only one of these videos did that for me. Putting aside brand bias for a moment (and I'm a big Panny fan and have never owned Nikon), I can't say this GH3 short did anything for me.

Very different style of grading and concept, heck I can pull up some Canon 7d footage that is breathtaking...... Lets all relax and if Nikon d600 is your choice then that's the beauty of this country "Freedom"

Me personally will be getting the GH3, I simply love the extreme wide detail shots you can get with it that I simply could't with My canon. Also wait till the Hacking community gets their hold on it + it has 1080 60fps which is great because I did a lot of Music Videos.

Actually, I think mr Logan's grading is so bad it reminds me of some average student's work.
Btw, I don't think the minor sensor marks were the problem in the short.
