Would you like some cheese with that whine?

Why don't think it's a whine, I do find it interesting that so many companies off incentives to purchase that didn't exist at the time that people bought six months previously.

Our bank does this, as does Costco.

If you are new, there are all sorts of freebies and incentives.

But long time customers have to quit and rejoin to get anything.

Funny marketing.

You know who doesn't do this?

Yahoo! Web Hosting. I routinely get Yahoo Small Business Web Hosting Service Announcement!s in my email or when I log onto the hosting page.

First few times, I thought... okay, outage announcement, service reduction, change in rates or whatever. To my surprise, each and every time it has been a free enhancement or upgrade to my existing service. 250 more email addresses once, 25 more GB of disk space for a site on another occassion, another gig of email space per account on another.

As far as I'm concerned, I'm a lifer with Yahoo! for all my business Internet. Any company can - must really - invent new ways to incent new customers when the product is starting to stagnate, it takes a visionary one to reward existing customers with the same treatment.

Before you complain about Panasonic too much, at least consider that they seem to stand behind their products once they take your money - that's not always the case.

In technology, prices go down and tech goes up. That's what happens.

You evaluate the current offer that's available to you at the time, and then you make your purchase decision. What happens in the future is largely irrelevant, it's what happens. You made a decision and you went with it, right?

When a car manufacturer starts offering $2,000 cash back, do we storm the sales offices and start demanding rebates if we bought our cars 10 months ago? I know I never have...

In the future the HVX will probably someday become an HVX200A with more features (if the DVX line is anything to judge by). Will original HVX owners then complain or, worse, will they say "Panasonic should never have improved the product" because for some reason the buyer thinks that it will "devalue" their investment? 'Cause if that's what someone wants, that's crazy -- car manufacturers are going to introduce new models every year, with new features, and they'll probably offer some rebates or incentives along the way too. Camcorder manufacturers do the same thing. It's just what happens.

Make your choice based on what the available offerings are at the time you need to buy. Don't buy if you don't need it; with technology things only get better for those who can wait, but when you need it, get it. And recognize that prices will always go down, and features will always go up. And so far Panasonic has (at least twice) made their new programs retroactive for a while (when the 8gb card dropped from $2200 to $1400 they gave 30-day price protection, and it looks like they're doing it here too). Actually three times, because when they introduced the HVX Book program they made it retroactive to cover any buyer...

There will always be people that whine and complain about the price of products that are basically just the cost of doing business. Personally I think it is totally amazing that you can buy a camera these days for under $10k that is almost as capable as one that cost close to $100k just a year or so ago. While the images may not be quite the same as a camera with a 2/3"chip, they can get pretty darn close.

fwiw, I was the one referred to as whining. My post was intended as a jk, in fun, hence the ":D" at the end of my original post. Sometimes hard to express things correctly on the net, context and expression sometimes misunderstood, or in my case, incorrectly expressed.

That said, I am thinking about getting my 2nd HVX a little earlier now.
