You can try to disable the hardware acceleration in the advanced settings of chrome. It worked for me.

thanks! i'll try that when i get home. only mentioned it here because it was causing a lot grief in one of the EVA1 facebook groups. to the extent that some were accusing others of manipulating the image to make it look bad.

Hi Mitch,

A Panasonic rep has stated that your company aims to have 12 Bit RAW 5.7K output through 6G-SDI to Odyssey and Shogun using CDNG files (up to 30fps) in early 2018:

Is this correct? Everything I had read previously about the EVA1 stated only 10 Bit RAW output at 5.7K.

Luc is talking about a goal, not a minimum promise. I don't like to discuss things that I have not confirmed will definitely happen. I'd much rather give you all a happy surprise instead of an unfortunate disappointment.

Thanks for your honesty Mitch. I really appreciate that. 12 Bit would simply be the icing on the cake as someone coming from the 10 bit 4K RAW of the Canon C500.

I think Filippo's EVA1 footage on Vimeo is really spectacular. I'm amazed by the combination of resolving power, DR, and the lack of over-sharpness (nice and creamy!). I suppose this is what happens when you have access to a 5.7K sensor and very effective anti-aliasing and downsampling for the purposes of 4K output. It's one of the most cinematic images I've seen from a camera anywhere near this price range. The motion/cadence is also very good.

Forget the FS7II, UM4.6, C200, or C300II, the image quality here competes more with the Weapon 6K and Epic-W Helium 8K, which cost around $30K.

Anyway, congratulations on the camera and best of luck on your launch.

What's with the passive aggressive downvoting of Stattos' comments? Mproust14 asked why the footage lacked dimensionality as if it looks like it was shot in front of a green screen, and the answer was "I don't believe it was shot in front of a green screen". I mean... seriously? That is a very unhelpful answer. AFAIK, The Alexa 65 is basically a large format version of the Alexa... I don't really see how Stattos comment, while phrased tongue in cheek, is remotely offensive or unhelpful?

ANYWAY.

mproust14: I believe the footage lacks dimensionility not because of the EVA-1, but because of the content. The shots are very flat in contrast (overcast weather), etc. Basically, they are very "safe" shots. I believe that in higher contrast scenarios, and scenarios with less flat lighting, you would see a lot more dimensionlity. It is light that crafts this, just as if you were to artificially light a set flat, or light it with accents and shadows to give it depth and dimension. I am personally of the persuasion that Panasonic would have been better to show of the EVA-1 in more challenging scenarios, but understand that from their perspective that introduces the risk to show the limits of the camera as well, so it's trade-off. I am personally inclined to believe the EVA-1 would have impressed here. We will have to wait and see. I will make a point though: go look at Apple's "shot on iPhone" gallery. "Dimensionality" in footage is a big topics. Lens choices lend to this, cameras lend to this, but the largest contributing factor from what I believe you are seeing here is merely content. Almost every shot in this demo was straight on (flat against a backdrop, all filmed very shallow DOF at f/1.4-2.8 with the background far in the distance, low contrast, etc. Even in the artificially lit scenes are extremely flat (the model popping up from under the water with super flat face lighting and super flat green backlighting is a prime offender - it's the aesthetic choice that makes that shot look like video and not film - *NOT* the EVA-1!!). There are some exceptions, but the point is, even phone cameras produce vastly different characteristics of dimensionality based on content and the photograpgher - there is nothing I have yet seen to indicate that the EVA-1 will lack this (and it will certainly be much better than an iphone!!), only some content shot very flat (I believe this demo here was more to focus on the color, anyway).

Regarding the grade, they both showcase different things, but I believe that Filippo's grade is clearly more cinematic (and thus to my eye, superior -- though I can absolutely see why Panasonic may have preferred the more vibrant original clip to showcase the colors, etc. Only critique here is they definitely should have released both simultaneously)

One quick thing to point out is that there are 2 versions of this footage available online with 2 different grades. The initial version posted in this thread was graded by Frédéric Savoir and the other version was graded by the DP of the footage Filippo Chiesa. Filippo’s version has less contrast and less saturation than Frédéric Savoir’s. See below:

Wow, these two look like different cameras! Great to see the flexibility but what color was her costume? !!

It seems like Filippo Chiesa’s version is a bit shorter too. I must say I prefer the look of his version much more. It has a very different character which changes the mood quite a lot, in a way that better suits the story.

Yeah, I need to be able to download the original files to really judge. There's some funkiness going on in the shadows that almost looks like macroblocking. I noticed it from jump, but it's really exacerbated when the night scene hits @5:40. Can't tell if it's Youtube compression (I'm watching on a rMBP in 4k) or the camera.

Hey Mitch! Can we get these on Vimeo with downloads enabled? I'm not even asking for the ungraded material (though that would really be ideal), just a ProRes export so I/we can fully judge.

EDIT: See below for what I'm talking about. People are mentioning it in comments there, too.
