Once you get used to parfocal zooms it's extremely hard to work with any varifocal lens.

I'm sure Canon's AF system is useful for some applications, but how would anyone use the Touchscreen when working handheld?

Not the touchscreen for one person handheld but doesn't the handgrip that comes with the camera have a joystick that lets you move the auto focus point? If it does you slap a loupe on the lcd monitor, shoulder mount the cam, or just use the on camera viewfinder or lcd, and toggle instead of touch to your focus point.

I would imagine the face tracking AF is something that a sole operator would appreciate, if it really is as good as advertised.

Same way I use a manual focus lens when shooting handheld, except instead of holding the lens with the left hand I hold the touchscreen with the left hand and use my thumb to select where to focus.

Some new details on the EVA1 from an interview on Cinema5D. Most notable to me are that 4k 60p will be 8-bit (but I suppose that's to be expected when capturing to an SD card). And HFR 2K will be windowed.

Panasonic EVA1: RAW, Slo-Mo & Removable IR Filter – Nela Pertl & Luc Bara – ON THE GO – episode 52

In this second episode about the Panasonic EVA1 camera, we talk to Nela Pertl and Luc Bara about the differences between the Varicam line and the Panasonic EVA1, slow motion functionality, the Raw module, the EF mount and the removable IR filter.

My first question: Why is it not called a Varicam while it shares so many of the features with its bigger siblings? Is it positioned in between the GH and the Varicam line?

We touch on the slow motion functionality of the camera, which is going to be 240fps, but apparently only in a windowed cropped mode in 2K and 1080p.
Panasonic is also planning to release a Raw module to go with the camera in order to be able to output Raw video. Sounds similar to Sony with the FS7.
Also – and that is a pretty cool feature – there will be a removable IR filter that is supposed to work just like a built-in ND filter – mechanically/electronically (re)movable.

The Panasonic EVA1 doesn’t come with a viewfinder, but only a touch-screen monitor (same as on the GH5), and I asked them why this is the case.
Last but not least, we touch on the fact that the camera records on (fast!) SDXC cards, which are comparatively cheap to buy – and how that can work with the relatively high data rate that we will expect from this camera.

Auto focus v manual focus. I lost this argument 10+ years back with still cameras. At least in the market place.

My argument was that a skilled camera operator was faster and more accurate than any auto focus device. I even proved it again and again. But, you know what? Skills take time and effort to develop, why bother when your camera has auto focus (and usually crippled manual focus as well).

In other words, old argument!

I also found it interesting that Luc said the EIS will take advantage of the 5.7k sensor so as not to damage the image. This is reassuring to me that it's a thought-out feature rather than a cheap consumer option like it is on the GH5.

I still need some kind of confirmation that a focus assist option exists like the one on the C series where a joystick on the grip allows magnify and moving around the image picture. This is absolutely crucial for me. Peaking is too unpredictable.

Ouch. Those were two of my "devil is in the details" possible pitfalls and both really hinder the draw of the camera for me. Not trying to be a debbie downer, but cropping in for slow mo is a real workflow issue especially if you shoot with primes (I do) and want to swap between slow motion and standard quickly. No 10-bit 422 in 4K 60p internally gives no edge over the GH5 codec wise, and means no 4K slow motion without an external recorder (unless you are willing to shoot vlog in 8-bit 420, no thanks; and without vlog, you lose DR and grading flexibility).

i want those jackets. or maybe a cap

also mentioned was itsgonna have the same touch lcd as the gh5. so theres probably gonna be a touch screen?

Totally agree. 10 bit 422 and 60p is a must have as is the slow motion using the full sensor....

I have read (somewhere on here, I think it was a link to a Cinema5D reference a page or so back) that the slo-mo will use a cropped sensor (at least in 2K mode, not sure about HD).

I guess we'll just have to wait and see when Panasonic announce the details nearer launch date.

Hey its better then the c200 which can only do c-log with 8bit 4:2:0 no matter what frame rate it shoots in.

Hmm..no 10bit 4k60 internally is really dissapointing. Still excited for the camera and the image quality but it looks like I'll have to factor in the price of an external recorder when looking at the overall package, and a hit to portability that comes with it, with the upside of cheaper media and prores/raw with the shogun. I'm also curious about the raw output on the camera and the compression it uses, but realistically I don't really see myself recording raw much, especially since it's at full 5.7k resolution, you lose one of the best benefits of oversampling on a bayer sensor, since it can't resolve much more than 4k anyway I'd rather get that in a more efficient 4k wrapper for 99% of jobs vs the extra flexibility in post.

Is it 5.7K in raw? I would have thought it scales to 4K in camera, base on the stuff I have been hearing. Is there somewhere that it is explained clearly?

You can't scale raw. Once you do it is no longer raw because it is processed. If a camera pumps out raw it does so with the full sensor or cropped. No realistic way to scale raw because that completely goes against the nature of what raw is. You can't have a bayer pattern that can be de-bayered if the image is scaled down You would end up with the worlds most messed up color mush and no longer have any form of a bayer pattern left. A bayer pattern depends on having the exact RGB layout and scaling would completely destroy that. It is physically impossible to scale raw and keep it raw.

I thought Mitch explained here on this thread a ways back that it was, indeed, 5.7K raw output. And, yeah...also says-so here: http://business.panasonic.com/AU-EVA1.html in the bullet points.

Having very limited experience with shooting raw in general, I always assumed raw has to be done at native sensor resolution since any oversampling process would destroy most if not all the benefits of shooting raw, which is giving you "raw" data from the sensor with nothing changed or thrown away. That assumption might be wrong, perhaps someone can shine some light on that issue.

Thank you guys, sorry, first cup of coffee syndrome. I am actually only concerned if it is 4K in other formats. I love that it is 5.7k in raw.

@Dom.G there is no standardized definition of "raw". It is up to the manufacturer to choose what raw means. In the case of bayer'ed chipsets, the definition is largely agreed upon, but once you get into different sensor technologies, that definition gets watered down.

The biggest misconception of raw, is that it is "throwing nothing away". Raw can be very compressed. "raw" does not imply "uncompressed". But if you mean native resolution, then yes, it should be at the native resolution assuming there is not cropping happening.

Once we start using sensors that don't use a bayer pattern overlay, then 50% of what most people think of raw is, will be thrown out the window. One of the problems I run into is that colloquially "raw" can mean almost anything people want it to. I have heard people talk of s-log h.264 footage as the 'raw'. It used to frustrate me, now I just roll with it.
