If I was in charge of marketing, I wouldn't make any announcement whatsoever until the thing was actually shipping to stores. But that's me -- and they're them, and they're the multibillion-dollar company who's been doing it for years, so -- I'm not telling you I prefer their method, I'm telling you that this is their established pattern.
You don't know that. When the HVX200 was announced, it was said to be "under $10,000". It was -- it was $5,995. So you don't know what the EVA-1 will cost -- it might be 7,999 or it might be less. It is probably not accurate to assume that it will be more.
And when it's closer to the time when you can actually give them "under 8 grand", then I am certain you WILL see footage. But today is not that day. And you can't give them your money now, so -- no harm, no foul. They've previewed what they will be releasing in the fall. That's all they've done. They haven't taken anyone's money under false pretenses, they haven't pissed on anyone's leg and told them it's raining. They previewed what is coming out in three to six months. There will be more announcements and more reveals as the time of release draws closer.
Ain't my job to prove you wrong -- I'm not employed by Panasonic and I don't get a penny from any EVA-1 sales. You're of course free to spend your money anywhere you want. Panasonic will go about the business that they are in -- developing and releasing professional video cameras. If your timeframe and their product coincide, then hey, buy one. If they don't, then don't.
I just can't stand mischaracterizations, so I have been trying to point out what IS the reality -- not what we wish the reality was.
Based on what we got so far, the market for the EVA-1 seems to be "people who can pay for an FS7 and want a camera like the FS7, but not the FS7, or the BM 4.6k, or the C200". The C200 at least has internal RAW and killer AF. We'll have to wait to see what the EVA-1 has going its way.
Panasonic, in my opinion, is new to this game - they are facing very strong competition in brand recognition among other things - but mostly the PANASONIC badge just dont hold much water.
Smaller size, better reliability and quality control, it's made by a bigger company with better customer service... That's about it.
You can say that about any camera. What sub $10K camera offers internal uncompressed raw, compressed raw, 12bit 4:4:4 & 10bit 4:2:2 prores, up to 60p in all recording formats, and up to 120p in 2K?
But Blackmagic has a reputation for quality issues (the Pro seems solid, but it's only been out for a few months so we'll see). It's scary to think of spending $6k on a camera and $2k on accessories just have quality control issues ruin your shoots.
I have used mainly panasonic cameras for the past five years but what a weird name for this camera, whoever named this camera has no clue about marketing, why can't you keep it simple and keep the varicam brand outfront and maybe call it Varicam Mini Pro, that would have a greater appeal and generate more interest in the camera. This was Panasonic's first and biggest mistake calling it the AU-EVA 1, nothing catchy whatsoever.
