Someone sweeping in was bound to happen. Too much waiting around...at first it's great and it gets people talking then half of them lost interest because it's taking too long.

A lot will depend on how crippled C200 internal recording will be. A 305 Mbps with 10-bit C-Log - good enough for the SD cards - and Dual Pixel AF will please many. But they go 8-bit internal ...

The C200 has a CFast 2.0 slot on the side, so I expect the same codec as the C300 II - XF-AVC 10bit. I hope they don't pull a XC10 on us with an 8bit 4K codec...

Taking too long? People wanting to buy a shiny new camera right now or last month are not Panasonic's target. Those interested in buying end of the year (in some places the beginning of the fiscal year) is who they are selling to, while teasing those who COULD buy now but might be willing to wait if the juice is worth the squeeze...preventing us from buying something else in the interim. I am in the "end of year" boat, considering all my options. The Canons still don't interest me. The Panasonic has the DVX200/UX-series form, which I like. Only 4 days and 3 hours before we know officially much, much more about both cameras and if anyone else has anything up their sleeves. To me, they're all up against Ursa Mini Pro, anyway.

You used to post a lot on the official BM forum (not sure if you still do; I'm not active there anymore) and should know better than anyone that the UM/UMP has problems.

All of the cams might be comparing paper specs, and the BM might turn out to be better, but first you have to get a good one off the conveyor belt.

Not sure how I feel about the rumors of the new cam having a "new sensor" instead of the one in Varicam 35/LT/Pure.

If true it should mean a less expensive camera. I can't see Panasonic under cutting it's own Varicam LT camera by using the same sensor in this new lower cost camera.

...which is why I haven't bought one; and I like gear that comes with a personality. :D

So, if "X" camera comes along that does the parts of the paper specs I like from Ursa Mini, and the image looks good, and it has a realistic price for me, and it isn't so proprietary I have to buy into some expensive brand system, then I would totally place it ahead of an UM/UMP decision. I have a good feeling about this Panasonic. If it really is a quasi DVX200 with GH5-ish specs and the spirit of a Varicam, I am onboard. Hell, I'm already onboard. We're basically always buying Sony sensors but there's something about Panasonic's color...I also like Canon's color, but I hate the EOS Cinema-series bodies. I hated using a C100 that one time. HATED it. I love the DVX200. This thing looks like a DVX200. I don't really care about raw, but I do care about internal 10-bit 4:2:2 and Super 35 and 4K. Also, there's a tiny part of me that imagines this camera will be christened AF200 which makes me giddy. The journey from DVX100 to DVX200 is a true story. I loved DVX100 and HVX200. I loved AF100. Gimme an AF200. It feels right.

Just 4 more days.

And, yeah, I did use to post a lot on that forum. I like the BMD peeps, and I like some of the users, but not enough to bring myself to wade through the everything else as frequently as I had before. Hit-and-run posting is not good community building; not for me. It's not good for the soul. Meanwhile, here we are waxing on about a mystery camera and having a good time throwing ideas around while the Panasonic guys are here, participating, and having fun, as well. That's a breath of fresh air for me. Being a DVX200 owner/op, I find myself contributing a whole bunch on that side of this forum, as well, and I feel like people are actually listening to me, and I feel like I'm actually contributing and actually helping people. And that's just the best thing.

Nor do I think it's simply going to be a GH5 sensor in a ~DVX200 body, per se.

I don't think it's MFT. I sure hope not. I don't know anything about the cameras specs.

Sony uses the same sensor in the FS5, FS7, F5 and F55. They just limit the ability in them based on the model. Not sure about processing if that's different in each. Sure keeps the cost down unless they have larger future plans for a new sensor then that makes sense as well. The end of all this guessing is almost over. Looking forward to interviewing Mitch at Cine Gear for Newsshooter.

Panasonic uses own sensors for their smartphones and high end cameras. MFT has been contracted to Sony, partially because Sony still owns a portion of Olympus (they sold off a portion earlier) and Olympus was the other major signee to the MFT format.

As to Sony's aging Cine Alta series (F 5/55/65), there are rumors of their much lauded F65 (17.6 MPX) sensor migrating down the line soon.

If true it should mean a less expensive camera. I can't see Panasonic under cutting it's own Varicam LT camera by using the same sensor in this new lower cost camera.

Why not? The same sensor from the GH4 was used in a lot of lower end m43 cameras that only cost $500.00. It isn't just about the sensor. The sensor is only one small fraction of what makes the image in a camera. The sensor really just takes in light and converts it to 1's and 0's. It is the DSP or the imaging processing that actually turn those 1's and 0's into something sexy.

We need to be careful to not over inflate the work the sensor does. It is only a part of what makes a camera great and the same exact sensor can make a $500 camera or a $2000 camera.

So yes a more cost effective camera could be realistic with the same sensor. It all really comes down to what is done with that sensor, how is the image processed, what features the camera has and the recording format. There could be plenty stripped out of this new camera like raw and dual ISO to keep the two markets separated. Besides once a sensor is designed the cost of putting it a new camera is minor compared to spending the R&D to design a whole new sensor. It is the research and development that costs money and not so much the actual manufacturing of the sensors. Designing a brand new sensor is actually more unrealistic here since Panasonic would spend a lot of time and money on the R&D. Using an existing sensor that has already paid for itself makes absolute sense and would be one of the main reasons why this new camera could in fact be affordable.

If I built cameras and wanted to capitalize on the killer sensor I designed I would try to make use of it in as many camera models as possible. Designing a new sensor for each model is just unrealistic and impractical.

The F55 has Global Shutter and completely different CFA. That would mean that the Fs5, Fs7 and F5 also have global shutter sensors and Sony just "disabled" it in those cameras...?
