it looks like I will need to invest in 4-6 fast 128gb cards.

I'd seriously consider waiting until we know what the new camera actually has.

128 multiplied 8 to make Gigabits from those gigabytes, diveded by 0.4 Gigabits (400 Megabits) = 2560 seconds or 42 Minutes, 40 Seconds - I guess, if it's really only 36 Minutes then there's either some overhead or it's a bit more than 400 Mbit/s.

You are correct. I was referencing VaricamLT which is a bit more so its a little conservative if the new camera is 400Mbps

The newish "V" ratings are sustained write times.

V30 – 30MB/sec Write
V60 – 60MB/sec Write
V90 – 90MB/sec Write

These new cards wont drop frames in the class they are in.

So..... The new Panasonic camera will fall under the V90 class :-D

Hypothetically speaking, the V90 cards are for 4K ProRes 422 HQ @ 770 Mbps. To do 770 consistently, unless the recorder has VBR, the card will have to exceed the V90 minimum by ~ 7%.

Now, will Apple license a 422 HQ in VBR?

Two notes:

Stop fishing for info on New Camera. I was talking about an SD card in reference to the GH5. Didn't say anything about New Camera.

ProRes IS a variable bit rate codec. It has a fairly narrow range that Apple will allow for the variation, but it is indeed variable. Back when I was at Convergent Design, this was one of the toughest hurdles we faced in capturing 2K240p in ProRes. Yes it is the same amount of data as 4K60p, but the information changes four times as fast so the processing of the image is far more intensive. Also, by its nature, much high frame rate imaging has highly detailed changing subject matter as its content. Fluid dynamics and explosions are extra tough on codecs.

A built-in fidget toy? So that's where the clicking sound is coming from!

By the time we get the specs for this camera, a third of us will be tired of it, and another third will be angry because they were expecting a $5k alexa. Hopefully the other third will love it.

Actually, no. Many of the Panasonic fixed lens cameras had a clicking sound from the OIS, nothing broken or wrong with the camera, that's just a sound they made. It kind of became an "in" joke that all of the noobs would ask and all of the Panasonic camera owners would laugh at because they all asked the same questions when they were noobs.

Yeah, sorry, I was just trying to extend the joke.

I wonder if you'll be able to put this camera on your shoulder without looking like you're sponsored by Zacuto...

Based upon the outline of the camera shown, no, it looks as if I will still need the VCT Pro baseplate, hopefully there is a relocatable handgrip and it looks as if the camera doesn't have an eyepiece so an EVF or Graticle will probably be needed. I don't do VF loupes like the FS7, you need a real eyepiece IMHO.

Agreed on the EVF....too easy to miss critical focus without a decent monitor or EVF....most likely it will just be a brain...I still doubt strongly that they'll use SD as the media....too slow and not robust enough!...I think most who will consider this camera probably already own the accessories to build it out....
Also have to add that I drool over the control panel that the Varicam LT uses....dare one hope for as much??

Of course, this is all speculation but to me, but in the silhouette image, I see an LCD screen and not an EVF. Control panel, to me, doesn't matter. I think control panels like on the LT only matter when you have an AC accessing it on the dumb side of the camera and I rarely shoot with ACs on most of my stuff. For handheld run & gun doc shooting, detached control panel becomes more of a nuisance than a benefit IMHO. The LT skirts the narrative and doc worlds so it makes more sense, but assuming this is a sub $10k camera, they are typically not used to shoot features with ACs and full crews, they are more often used on OMB, small crew doc/event type shooting so I would be very surprised to see a detachable control panel.

It seems too small for a shoulder set up, as if it's meant to be cradled like a c100. If there's no EVF then the gh5 could have the edge for handheld (at least out of the box) because of its built in EVF and how light it is.

I agree that it won't get a control panel...really mentioned in the context of Varicam LT users, who love the control panel whether for use themselves or an assistant...and I suspect in order to keep the price down and image up, the camera will probably be rather simple...just the bare necessities which in the case of say the Alexa or the F35 has worked well for years....and that may be why it's called the Cine Camera as this introduction...

I'm blown away by the GH5's specs. I think the Varicam LT is sexy. If this new mystery cinema camera is between these two (and it supposedly is as it's "filling the gap") then I think I'm going to be quite happy to see it show up. If the price is right, I just might have one.

I think you are right, but my C100 lives on a Zacuto VCT Pro Baseplate with a Wooden Camera grip relocator and a Tilta 6.5" arm on an Arri Rosette mounted to the VCT Pro. When I use my Ninja Blade recorder, it rides on a six inch 15mm rod at the rear of the VCT. Even my old Arri SR2 S16mm camera was setup in a similar way. To me, there is no substitute for shoulder mounted for shooting stand up interviews, I don't like looking up a subjects nostrils when cradling the camera, although I do like cradling when you are in a confined space and need to shoot vertically, some at foot level, then waist level, then up overhead. But it's not sustainable for a long period of time without shakiness and microjitters whereas I can shoot stuff for a twelve hour day off the shoulder, it will look rock solid as long as I have a balanced, well thought out, ergonomically correct setup.
