EVA1: Panasonic AU-EVA1! Announcement and latest updates

Mitch knows for sure about this new camera and he likes to tease us and build interest. And it amuses him! What we can do until the absolute facts are know is to put the pieces together which at least amuses me!

It's no secret the segment where the C100 mkII and FS5 are situated can be a lucrative one and for Panasonic to enter this price level comes as no surprise. What is a surprise is the long delay. Now it's time. Sure a little bit to late and with no earth rattling features.

As this new camera is situated below the Varicam line it wont provide anything more than these. But it will be light weight and cost effective to own and operate. Hence using an affordable media as SDXC. It's to be expected for Panasonic to provide fast SDXC cards together with the launch to match the camera bitrate. Just as Sony did with XQD cards matching XAVC bitrates. Will there be a new codec? No I think not.

Just as Sony did with the FS7 and FS5 they did put in a sensor from a higher speced camera - the F5. It makes sense for them to do just like Sony, unless they see it as a better option to incorporate a Sony sensor more or less just like the one in the FS7/F5/FS5. Hence we can expect 14 stops of DR either way.

As far as features the standard features we want and wont accept anything less than stuff like dual XRL, ND-filter, Slow motion, 10 bit codec, 4k/1080 resolutions, dual slots. SDI/HDMI output must be incorporated. As this cameras shape are in the same league as C100 and FS5 expect it to have about the same feature-set like side grip and modular design with detachable parts.

But I would expect a lesser built quality than a C100 and maybe even a bit lower than Sonys FS5 just due to how Panasonic cameras have been before. Especially for something in the more affordable price group.

So will it have an EF-mount and S35 sensor? An S35 sensor is a given because we wont except anything less and they know it! To put and EF-mount as on the LT camera is to be expected and this leaves me to believe it will borrow the whole sensor/mount block from the LT camera.

As for the built and price level (which should be at the $5000-7000 level to stay competitive) I think Panasonic will borrow from both the LT and DVX200. Take some of the tech inside the LT and use the cheaper body parts from the DVX200.

Does this new camera carry on anything from the AG-AF100? No way.

Mitch, we know the rules and so do you. You wouldn't get this from any other forum, but you gotta understand, we've known each other for so long. We all know what's been going on.

We know this game and we're gonna play it - don't tell me you're too blind to see? I don't think anyone meant to tell a lie and hurt you

How about another 'teaser' photo? ...

Whatever floats your boat.

I know this isn't really for me. But the hibernating indie filmmaker in me always gets a little interested in these new cameras. At the price of an original C100, then I would be interested. Very interested. Hint hint.

not speculation but wish list for me: dual native iso's like the higher end varicams, electronic variable ND like the fs5, backlit sensor like a7rii, some kind of anamorphic mode (4x3 sensor?)ibis like gh5, better codecs and vlog than gh5. i'd like them to work on their skin tones in cine d, cine v, and natural as well.

Dual ISO would be a game changer and tear sales away from the FS5 and Blackmagic Ursa Mini.

My wishlist

Same Varicam S35 sensor,
Dual ISO
EF mount,
Internal 10bit 4K 4:2:2, (will prob have less frame rates and options than the Varicam, but I'm Ok with that )
Dual SDXC Slots,
Dual XLR's,
Direct Audio Controls like the DVX200
Built in ND's (electronic variable would be great, but prob won't happen)
Viewfinder
LCD,(high resolution 4-5")
Handgrip,
V-LOG,
HDMI,
SDI,
Timecode,
Genlock,
Bluetooth,
Wireless,
Raw Output,

price $6,000 - $6,500 (And its game over for the FS5)

Would some form of IS be possible on this camera ? Probably not if it's a S35 sensor.

Gimme gh5 specs with varicam sensor.( if i had to choose between 800 or 5000 id pick 5000iso)
And maybe electronic nd :)

my guess:

- new s35 sensor (or the one from the LT) with 14 stops, ef mount
- no dual iso, but higher native iso than 800
- traditional ND-filterwheel
- no eye-viewfinder
- traditional I/O like SDI, HDMI, XLR. no raw-sdi out
- 4k60p, 180fps in 2k
- internal 10 bit recording with codecs from the gh5
- internal image stabilization
- full v-log, color science from the cinema cameras
- price: $4000-$5500

still waiting for a killer feature that differentiates it from the competition in that price-class (e.g. vari-nd and even higher framerates on fs5; not that i care, but autofocos in the c100; good low light capabilities on sony & canon; RAW, interchangeable mount, 4.6k, resolve studio & nice touch-screen menu on the blackmagic), like a vari-nd, some computational-imaging-magic, mechanical image stabilization, a new, overhauled UI with scopes, false color, guide lines, etc... , high frame rate sdi out, 444 out, 6k resolution, hdr/wide color gamut workflow....

but if it's "just" a very competitively priced, small 4k cam with a s35 sensor and the color science of pana's big boys, i'd be very interested. if it costs more than €5000 then it'll probably be a hard sell against the ursa mini pro - at least to me - which could be significantly heavier, but offers other advantages, and not really be a competitor to the fs5 and c100 which will probably both have more capable successors in that price range within the next 12-18 months.

OK, let's play...

My wish list / expectation:
* Sensor and IQ exactly like Varicam LT (S35, awesome DR)
* Frame rates halved from Varicam LT (4k 30 fps, and 1080p at 120 fps, or maybe 96 fps)
* Size and weight halved from Varicam LT
* Codec like GH5
* Audio connectors like GH5 (main body with just 3.5mm in and out, XLR on not-included accesory)
* $5k

This would put it at the top of my rent list, but definitely not on my buy list because the mount and sensor size are wrong for my lens set (my lenses are designed for FF, I'm fine with S35 but only if I can use a speedbooster).

I know the GH5 does 4k 60 fps but you have to leave something out in order to reduce the size and weight from that of the Varicam LT, and I'd rather have the same sensor running at a lower spec than having the GH5 sensor and its (I think) much lower DR. If the heat from the Varicam LT comes from the processor and just switching it for the GH5 one can give us a smaller and cheaper camera that still shoots 4k 60 fps with awewsome DR, that'd be great, but I won't hold my breath (and it would probably be $8k).

This thread needs the twist! Like some official footage from the camera or something similar, before Cinegear! I say we need the twist! :-)

please, Mitch give us the twist. Surely you'll have some exclusive but still vague info for us closer to the unveiling?
Who knows how much Panasonic pays Mitch to keep his mouth shut! Maybe we should all pitch in and get the info from Mitch, if all the community pays one dollar to Mitch he'll become rich! This is a crazy proposal, I know...just joking...or not?

Not one twist, but two!

- They were actually dead the entire time.

- The calls are coming from inside the house!

It would take a lot more than $1 each to get anything else outta me.

This would put it at the top of my rent list, but definitely not on my buy list because the mount and sensor size are wrong for my lens set (my lenses are designed for FF, I'm fine with S35 but only if I can use a speedbooster).

If you need a wider lens, buy a wider lens, but a 50mm lens designed for full frame and a 50mm lens designed for s35 are both going to produce the same fov on a s35 camera(and any other focal length for that matter). So saying that just because your lenses are designed for FF makes them not ideal for use in s35 doesn't make a lot of sense, unless you're just trying to say you need some wider focal lengths.

And for what it's worth, the new camera IS s35.

It may be frustrating, but it's still effective and very cheap marketing...I'm glad it's a M4/3 mount on a S35 variable sensor though!!...and that the mount is locking!
