F55 can't keep up with the main 2, in terms of being "cinematic". May just be the latitude, but I can never really put my finger on it. But it is an incredible broadcast camera. Can handle anything you throw at it. Really amazing! It is just ready to go, and a fun to work with, and the images are great. global shutter too! It is definitely the best camera in television right now.

To keep beating my own dead horse: I've been expecting Sony to release a full frame camera in the FS-series ever since they teased the FS5... If they made an FS5-like camera with full frame sensor (with S35 crop usable in 4K) and IBIS, I think it would sell boat loads... I know I'd want one... Especially if they'd include the improved face recognition AF from the A6500/A9 as well!
 
Cool, but looking at some of the AF videos from the A9 is already pretty damn impressive! It's working pretty good on my FS700 so can just imagine with a A9 or A6500 it must be great already.

Sony needs to upgrade the old sensors in the FS5/7 line with stacked BSI models (low light performance is a big problem on the FS5), plus get some internal 10-bit mojo going. If the FS5II can't even match the GH5 for internal 10-bit 4K, it's got a problem. If they can do that AND add IBIS, they're pretty much golden. Sure, there's more it could do, but those items alone would be incredibly popular in that form factor and price point.

I saw some video with autofocus in video as well, but can't find it now...
But as it can shoot 20 frames per second and keep track of athletes running directly towards the camera, it's not so far from 24fps...
I'm mostly interested in improvements in face recognition though, as that's what works great for me. I have the camera in manual, and then occasionally hit auto focus with face detection activated and the camera finds the face and focuses... already works ok on the FS700 and thinkmtheres been big improvements with the A6300/6500/A9 so put those into a video camera to begin with and I'd be happy.

Sony could update everything. A7SII and A7RII with the A9 features on top of 10-bit 4:2:2 internal with a higher (GH5 matching) bit rate. Both FS-5 and FS-7 could do likewise + get BSI sensors. They could also offer currently non-existing cameras based on A7SII and A7RII/A99II/A9 (or III), using a full frame BSI sensor.

And their entire F5/55/65 series is almost six years old, which allows for a lot of reshuffling and pass-downs both quality and feature wise. If it's a F-65 replacement, it can also be either full frame/Vista Vision or even medium format a la Alexa 65. Sony, naturally, makes a medium format sensor (50 MPX) that is used in Pentax 645D, Fuji 50s and Hasselblad X1D.

That is how I shoot with the 5D Mark IV many times - which is superior to everything else - so that's why I'm interested.

I'm a big supporter of intelligent AF.

This has always been the case. Camera manufacturers test their cameras under their specific conditions and get 15 stops and publish that, then someone does a standard for all camera test and it comes in at 13.5, then apparently the camera wasn't set up right. I've seen it before with almost every manufacturer out there.

Some conjecture there for sure. My advice has always been, when you NEED a camera, you have to go based on whats available today. Now if that day is today I couldn't choose the new unknown Panasonic camera. If that day is in 3 months, I have to decide on what's available to me then etc. If you have time well then you can sit in an infinite loop because there's always something new on the horizon.
 
Everyone seems to arrive at their dynamic range measurements differently, but I will firmly hold to our "14+" measure for the VariCams. There are several independents who have measured it as higher. A major producer/distributor company recently did a private test and found that while the numbers appeared to be a bit all over the place with the manufacturers' stated dynamic range, there were two clear conclusions:

- The VariCams shared the top spot with the usual benchmark camera for DR, the Alexa 65.

- The VariCams (and for that matter, the Alexa 65) had a very attractive and subtle rolloff of the highlights into overexposure where some other rather expensive high end cameras clipped hard.

The good news is that such tests are easily repeatable. It doesn't matter how you measure your scale as long as you put all the cameras through matching tests. And when done this way theVariCams always come out right at the top of the heap.

Back to the new camera, I can't comment on it's DR because it isn't released yet. When the camera comes out in the fall y'all can test your brains out like I know you will.
 
Hopefully this new camera will do a "proper/real" 12 stops of dynamic range. With added log variants even higher.
 
It needs LOG to even do 12. Any regular picture profiles/styles are usually less than 10.

Although Panasonic has those Cinelike Ds and Vs...maybe could get a bit more out of that depending on how it's implemented.

Ha, Ha. But I will only state things that are true, and I'm at a point in my career where I try to choose the products I work with that reflect well on me as well as are opportunities where I feel I can contribute. I believe in the VariCams as well as what Panasonic is doing with its products and the new camera coming soon.

If all I wanted was to make money I'd be a dentist, because why else would you stick your fingers in other peoples mouths all day?
