Panasonic AG-AF100 NEWBIE GUIDE and FAQ

It doesn't use custom connectors for the video cables, so it's unlikely that any cable would be included. Witness the HPX170 - it has component video output and HD-SDI. The component connector uses a custom D-terminal, so the component cable was included. The SDI was a standard BNC connector, so no SDI cable was included.

I love the fact that it doesn't require custom wires. I hated the weak custom monitor jack the came with my HVX200. All cameras should use the most reliable and quality wire standard connections available. It's great to know if 1 of my guys misplaces or some how damages a wire that I can pop into an electronic store or go on line a get another one with minimum down time.

im guessing its bundled with the tiny block of cheese battery?

That "tiny block of cheeese" battery is perfect to pop on for steadycam JR shots due to less weight. To reply to the other post about the expensive batteries... Tapeworks Texas has them for $120... I just reserved two.

While youre there grab yourself some RG6 cable and some solderless connectors and make your own. Good to have on hand.

Very useful 'all in one' post.

Maybe, when release is closer and final (final!) specs are announced, a sticky might be in order.

I'm watching the AF100 with interest, only problem for me is waiting on the Birger Canon mount's functionality (I have a lot of Canon Glass)... unless Panny have some new lenses waiting in the wings.

Here's a question I haven't seen answered anywhere.. will this camera have provision for a hard-wire external record button, like for a handgrip?

Previous cameras provided for aftermarket zoom controllers with start-stop, but since zoom control is not a possibility here, I hope Panasonic hasn't overlooked the option. A nice Panasonic and/or aftermarket grip with an integral momentary switch would be very nice.

Are you talking about controlling it on a boom? or tall on a tripod? If so, I read on one of the threads that it will ship with an IR remote. I think I also read about a place for a wired remote... I made one of the DIY zoom and start/stop controls for the DVX that was posted here on the forum (long ago). I still have it... wonder if it'll work on the AF?

Yes. It has ports for remote control of start/stop, focus, and iris. If you're using a lens that the camera can control (such as the 14-140) you can execute remote wired control of focus and iris, in addition to the ability to always control record start-stop.

Will the "AFX" be able to use the same controller that worked with the HVX or will we have to get a new one?

Thanks Barry for the info. I thought I read that you can jam sync the AFX to external time code, is that right and if so where is the connector?

Yes, you can sync it to LTC timecode. It uses the VIDEO OUT jack for that purpose. You can set it into timecode-read mode, or timecode-export mode, and then sync, and then exit the timecode sync mode and go back to normal operations. You don't leave the cable connected at all times, continually jamming, instead you synchronize them and then disconnect.

Great so the AFX can be jam synced with a SoundDevice 744T and run with true double system sound unlike the HVX, good to know, the more I find out about the AFX the more I like it.

Curious. Shouldn't two 32GB cards = 12 hours, just like a single 64GB one? Or perhaps there's an "each" omitted from the 32GB line?

Is it possible to send the 2.35/2.40 cropping overlays out the HD-SDI output? Might be nice to be able to take the masking tape off of the director's monitor.
