Panasonic AF101 Footage

Trust me, I have lived through too many camera intros where the early footage undermined the first 6 months of sales. Thank you all for understanding and not BBQing Joe.

Thanks for understanding,

Jan

Footage looks really impressive. All the initial impressions so far of this camera have been positive.
Looking forward to more.

this alone was a huge unexpected treat. and i loved it. even the vimeo compression on a 42" blown up looked good, specifically CU of her face and the blacks in the wide. i like what i saw and totally appreciate it not being a fair representation. but if it can only go up from here, i cannot wait to see the final AVCCAM footage.

though i will be using all of my redrock rail system stuff, very cool to see what zacuto did and what it looks like.

I am glad to see that Panasonic wants to get it right before releasing raw footage that will not represent the final product, Keep up the good work Jan.

I too want to say thank you. I've had mine on pre-order for a couple weeks now, this just gives me so more warm fuzzies about that decision to buy it.

AVCHD is far better than any codex being used in any DSLRs, which have gotten a lot of "wow's' lately.

Well, to be precise, AVCHD is what the Canon DSLRs shoot.

The codec just isn't very well implemented there...

as it's also the same codec you can see on the best looking Blu-Rays.

I see the only reason to hold AVCHD raw footage.
And this reason is - same codec as in GH2. No CABAC present in current implementation.
Presenting such footage and proof that this is indeed same codec could mean big disaster for AF100 sales.
Most probably they hope to hold as much as possible.
So, encoder analysys will be buried under positive reviews and not all will be not so noticeble.

Vitaliy - I really hope you are wrong, I've already paid my deposit and won't be happy if this is the case.

Joe - I assume your *rolling eyes* are because I am going to be over the moon with my camera? :)

The footage really looks good, very exciting days for Indy Film making!

Without native files, I guess we will have to wait for samples of high motion, high detail whip pans to see how similar the AF100 is to the GH2

Not in today's blogging, vlogging, twittering and overall detail obsessed market. Any weakness will certainly be attacked by pro-Canon supporters.

In no way I want to say that AF100 codec is bad, or not up to the task.
But having same codec implementation could result in marketing disaser.

You're forgetting that much of the back end of this camera is the HMC150 -- and that has nothing to do with the GH1/2. I'd bet with confidence that the AVCCAM aspect is fine and ready to go. The issue is that they haven't seen the footage from that shoot done with a prototype with missing functions, and if the footage is released it will be dissected and analyzed to death for months by people on forums who jump to extreme conclusions with limited information -- and boy would that make Sony happy.

More than footage, I want to see the internals of the camera compared to the GH2. (Not that I'm expecting to see this anytime soon, nor do I expect any company to show this, but someone will take it apart when it launches) We are talking about a sensor in a professional body that costs significantly less than any of it's nearest competition in the professional camera market. I think people want to know how this amalgamation of the GH2 and something like the HMC150 is being delivered at this price point. How much of the sensor downsampling and processing has been lifted from the consumer cameras (considering it still has face detect) and the possible ramifications on codec implementation.

I'm still expecting the AF100 to be amazing, possibly perfect, but I've seen enough samples from the GH2 to see that it still has a big problem in high motion, high shutter environments.

and boy would that make Sony happy.

I still think that, even worst case scenario with the AF100, Sony is not going to be able to compete. Canon's Professional Video division is not going to be able to compete until the DSLR division moves onto a faster processing Digic chip.

HMC150 is clearly not tightly related to AF100.
HMC150 is 3CCD camcorder with quite old architecture.
I don't see any reasons to get any main chipset parts from HMC150.
According to my sources AF100 is much closer to GH2 than to any Panasonic camcorder.
