Panasonic AF100 Australia - Price info added

2 of us went out to FOX last Tuesday at 1430h. There were 5 others just leaving, so we had the helpful Pana folk run their demo to ourselves. It was very impressive with a large Cooke (Lemac rental) lens mounted with Arri addons.

The cam is 80% complete but we couldn't find anything that didn't work, their locally shot demo looked great in the Sth hemisphere light. They had a range of lens including a wide angle also looked great. I thought the LCD was a good size and the VF comfortable and sharp.

One interesting thing, it was mounted on a rental Miller Compass 15 head with Solo CF sticks, it had way more use than mine and I was interested to see how the drag controls were much smoother to operate.

After 20mins 2 more guys turned up and the Pana folk said there was a steady stream to that time. They had 5 more hrs to go but they were interested in all comments. It seems it may be software updateable on line, look out for that.

Have a great time in Brissie guys, take along a card and see if they'll let you shoot something.

Cheers.

Awesome. Got a card with me just in case. Can't wait to get my hands on the camera.

So how did the show go in Brisabne, did you shoot anything Mat?

Cheers.

Noel and I went down there at 11 and didn't leave until 7. I got to meet Rob Myers from Panasonic who is a really nice guy, he even went down to Lemac and brought us back a 18-50mm Cooke cinema lens, which absolutely rocked. We were even allowed to wander around parts of Albion with the camera for an hour, Noel did most of the shooting seeing as he has had the most experience with Panasonic's. We ran the footage straight from the camera through a monitor and it looked great, i can not see any of the issues people keep complaining about. We pushed the camera and we couldn't seem to find any hideous highlights (provided it was properly exposed). All i know is that the camera is everything Panasonic promised and more, i think they have under priced the camera. It is worth a hell of a lot more than $5000. Unfortunately now i am having withdrawals and now have to shoot with a DSLR (never realised how bad it was until i had something like the AF to compare it to) and already miss the waveform monitor. January cannot come soon enough.

I think Noel's going to post a few clips soon enough.

Yes, it was a Red zoom. But was better to have something a little heavy on there (shoddy mechanically but nice sharp images).

A lot of what I did there was when we didnt actually record. Im not a chart shooting type. I push the camera around and see how much I can stretch things out. With some scene file tweaks and shooting different things - Im not sure what the production model will look like but Barry posted before 10 1/2 stops DR. I would say easily on the model I was using.

Day and exterior location was rather unpleasant unfortunately, something Id just avoid usually where possible if my aim was to shoot pretty pictures. Raining on and off etc. The studio itself is a studio - a big white cyc wall and I didnt aim for much else other than just to do a few light set ups on a person and just see what I was getting from the camera. Im reluctant to post any of it, well I think the reasons for that may be obvious.

But those results were able to impress a few people on a monitor with waveform.

Thanks to Lemac for providing the lens. Thanks to Rob and Meg for providing the camera and letting us mess around with it all day.

I think the consensus was between Matt and myself that with time and resources you'd be very close to an F3. But with the Dual Link added and Slog on the F3, thats going to be a stretch. AF is 5000 bucks folks. It kicks ass.

I will say this though, I pulled out my 5Dmkii to shoot some stills at one point and was totally confused for a moment on where all the goodness of function had gone. Then I realised I was only shooting stills and happy times.

Theres going to be some interesting things happening locally so stay tuned for some things coming up like workshops etc.

Well there will most likely be some interesting announcements in the New Year for Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne regarding the AF102 (Australian Model) - so keep your eyes and ears out for those.

Yes, and I assure you and everyone else, and remember I have no vested interest only information, that you were given that price in error.

And going back a few pages, someone said John Barry's was going out of business - simply not true.
