Panasonic AF-100 evaluation footage by CREWS.TV

Jean - please offer the option to download. Vimeo compression is not an ideal way to view this in all it's glory. Detail is amazing though. Thanks for sharing

Here's a quick and dirty CC on a frame grab of the footage.

Skin looks great.

here is my go at it. footage looks nice. Im still on the fence about pre ordering this one..... Was really hoping this would be the cam for me but wanted something with better compression than what i get with my 7D. The one thing I can't stand about the 7D besides the aliasing, moire and jello vision is the gradation from medium to darks where we see circular patterns when doing any type of medium to extensive grading.

Really waiting for some footage to come online so we can judge from that. Need to see how user friendly AVCHD is on the computer or if converting is a must... All that stuff takes time.

Plus the footage was captured via HDSDI to a Panasonic P2 field recorder to AVCINTRA, not AVCHD. You are not viewing 8bit 4:2:0 source. (Nothing wrong with what they are doing, but using a 4500 USD piece of equipment to help get that look might put
the camera out of some peoples price range). Maybe getting a hold of a new Ki Pro Mini might be a more affordable real world test?

There are at least three variables here:

1. Native AVCHD;

2. SDI-HD out to pro res using ki pro, etc.; and

3. AVCINTRA out to Panasonic's p2 device (whatever it's named).

I'd like to see all three or more if possible.

We would love to put the original files up for scrutiny but Panasonic have asked us kindly not to. We would expect that they would allow us eventually or hold everyone with pre-production models to not do so until the production unit has been delivered.

They are extremely transparent here and I think that is a great brave move for them to allow us to see preliminary footage in this way. It shows confidence and faith so we will respect that.

Looking at that footage in depth can be a bit dangerous considering all the compression and workflow paths that we are dealing with. So as I have said in many forums, please use a grain of salt and due in fact hold back any technical opinions until you are actually looking at the production files. That is my suggestion if you want to save yourself any sleepless nights.

Papa, did you do a skin grade on a .jpg?

We did opt for a blue look in that scene, getting caught out a little with the fading light we kept it constant rather than changing white balances between shots, knowing the colorist would love us in post but not necessarily applicable here.

yves if its not too much to ask, would panasonic allow a raw screen grab from avchd vs avcintra? :) would love to keep some peeps at bay

I have to say I am a little conflicted here about what is the policy about permitting some footage to be revealed, but not the raw footage.

Seems it should be one way or the other, but what do I know.

Please tell me that this guy in the video is not a real photographer!!!! Every time I watch the video I cringe when I see how he holds the camera....

I'm gonna need more footage of the model in her underwear please ....... for research purposes or course. :engel017:

Yes there was some discussion about revealing the avc intra but I think where it was left is it would do the unit just as much confusion. It was just the feed off the HDSDi and again could misrepresent the unit. So last discussion with Panasonic was to leave it until product release.

What they did permit us to do is report on it all we want so we are working on another story as we speak. Just waiting for our expert who is reviewing the 24mbs to come back with his notes. Its not great but it will give us something to work on until the unit is fully signed off. When is a unit fully signed off? RED has shown us that you can have as many software versions as days in a month.

With my XDCAM I get a software upgrade every six months, its great, always improving. I appreciate that everyone is gagging for it but a sneak peek is exactly that, and that is what we have been offered and if this is abused then it simply means these sorts of things will either stop or be heavily controlled. Panasonic were only present for the shoot and in fact never interfered. They never vetted a word, made insinuations or even put caveats. The only request was no download-able files. We are transparent about this and so are they.

Regarding the model, I believe that Jan is in discussion to have her go on tour with Barry Green.
