Panasonic 4K GH4 possibly coming next Spring...

Hello 'Brother'

ANOTHER GH in a DSLR case????
WHY? What a hassle rigging these things!

Photokina is just 9 months away. This had better not be the GH4 final config.
18-35mm f/1.8 on m43 is equivalent to 36-70mm f/3.5 on fullframe, and on m43+sb it is equivalent to 26-50mm f/2.5 on fullframe

two problems with this camera for me:
* I want a bigger sensor (my lens set is designed for FF, or APS-C with speedbooster)
* I don't need higher resolution, but I want better DR

exciting times anyway

I will cancel my Sony 4K Handycam FDR-AX100 pre-order if the GH 4K specs are true since I still have the GH1, GH2 with four m4/3rd lenses like the 25mm F0.95 Nokton along with adapters for my PK mount lenses.

With plenty of 4K displays in Panasonic's booth, it's appropriate the firm's finally shown off a camera in its GH line that records 4K video. The company's keeping most of the hardware's specs close to its collective vest, but a representative was able to divulge a few details. UHD content can be recorded at 200 Mbps, and output in a full live feed via a mini-HDMI port (thanks to ALL-I Intra mode) to display on a computer or record to a hard drive. Of course, the Micro-Four Thirds shooter can save footage straight to an SDXC card -- a UHS Class 3 prototype variant tuned for such a task was on display -- though space will run out fairly quickly.
There's no word how many megapixels the cam totes, but it will be able to simultaneously snap photos while recording video. More details are set to arrive with the camera's official release in late February, when it'll arrive with a price tag of $2,000 or less. In the meantime, look out below for a glimpse of the shooter in the gallery

As always, early rumors should be taken with a grain of salt.
One of two products will emerge.
A. Yet another transitional (aka hybrid mirror less) in a consumer friendly DSLR case. That would be Deal killer for me
B. The current GH3 case mule is just that, a marketing mule and the final forum factor is pro friendly and that would be a win.
With photokina 9 months away, I would sit back and relax! This story will not be worth blabbering about for another 8 months 👅
Sorry, but there's so much about this that just doesn't ring true. The GH1, GH2, GH3 have all basically been stills cameras with a video mode - so why now use the same designation for a primarily video camera? (Even with "AG" in front?) It's the opposite to what marketing people normally try to do. And then "the GH4" - it's extremely uncommon in Japan to use "4" as a product designation as apparently "four" sounds like "death". (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_superstitions )

The rumours say that it's supposed to go head to head with something like the C300. Technically, and especially for 4K, it's starting at a disadvantage with a sensor about half the area - but then it crams twice as many photosites into that smaller area (about 16Mp cf 8Mp). That would give the processing a much harder time to get a decent 4K - yet this new camera is supposed to do all this at a fraction of the price!?!

Finally, if they really did release this "pro" camera (with a designation previously used for consumer stills cameras) at this sort of low price, and if it indeed did use micro-P2, then what's that likely to do to the marketing of the rest of the Panasonic range? I'm sorry, I just don't see it.

It's conceivable that SOMETHING may be in the pipeline, and SOME of the rumoured specs are true, but I shall be totally amazed if they're ALL as rumoured!

If your crop factor calculations are true. I'M OUT!
I need 1.5 crop factor at most.
No appetite for infinite dof

Hehe, I came here to post that brochure too :)

Looking at the video specs, it does 4K at 30p, 1080p60 with 4pixel mixture, and 720p60 with 9pixel mixture... all of which point to the following: in video mode, it only uses a central crop of 3840x2160, which means it goes from a 2.04x crop to a 2.47x crop. If that's so, then even with a speedbooster it is still 1.75x, so, smaller than APS-C, and much smaller than S35.
No mention of DR, but it seems it will be a low-light monster, as they advertise it as "lowest noise sensor in the market", plus it seems to do full readout and downsampling for video, plus that extra stop from the speedbooster.

Well I guess the sensor size is probably not going to be that much different but do we know whether or not their is going to be improved DR on this cam?

Absolutely none, AFAIK. But if they talk about resolution and not about DR, RAW, log mode, 10-bit codec, etc, I tend to think it will be similar to the GH3 in this respect.

Focal length is intrinsic to the lens: an 18-35 with a .71X MFT Speedbooster (= focal length reducer) has a focal length of 12.8-24.9mm.

On most MFT sensors that boosted Sigma's Field of View will be equivalent to the FOV of a 25.5-49.8 lens on a 'fullframe' camera, however on a GH2 in 16:9 mode the boosted lens is equivalent to the FOV of a 24-46mm. Which is why it's more straightforward to refer to focal length rather than to FOV equivalencies.

I've only one guess on this camera: There won't be any crop in HD. While the maths indicate such a crop the marketing doesn't. I makes no sense that Panasonic throws this camera in the BM-basket and compromises the FOV of their own lenses.

On my wishlist I agree with Samuel: 10 bit internal codec in HD and improved dynamic range would turn the GH4 into a great tool - but yet I can't find any prove that it will be so.

As long as the GH4K sells for around $2K I'm in. It's everything I want in a camera according to these rumored specs:

16mp
1/8000 shutter
1mil dot OLED screen
21mm OLED viewfinder, 3,000+ dot.
Time code
200mbps mp4 All-i/100mbps IPB
4k/30p
4:2:2 10/8bit output
3G-SDI and XLR adaptor (An adaptor that the camera sits on with XLR x2, HD-SDI x4)

I previously owned a RED ONE and loved the image quality, but it was just too damn big and heavy for the type of shooting I do. I'm in love with the image quality and size of my current GH3 cameras, but I know 4K is the future and want to shoot in that format ASAP. A GH3 that can shoot in 4K is just what I need. Well, that and peaking. :)

I'm cautious with these details while Berry Green is trashing them - maybe he is a tad better informed than us and he is doing so in the wise foresight not to compromise the real and - maybe - less spectacular (but hopefully still advanced and up to date) specs.

main reason im skeptical on the rumors:
panasonic consumer lumix IS NOT panasonic Broadcast
they share the same name but theyre from a different division

if something comes out of NAB, it wont be a GH.
If something comes out thats GH it probably wont have broadcast features like 10bit 4:2:2.

Well, Engadget says they spoke to a Panasonic rep who said it would have 200mbps:

This looks like the real deal. Though I'm expecting 4:2:0 8bit 4K to SD card and 10bit 4:2:2 1080p via HDMI.

I might be mistaken, but didn't they merge last year?

The way I look at this rumored camera if it is true is that it is basically a great GH3 with a pretty darn cool extra bonus added in. From what I can tell you can use this thing exactly as a GH3. When you are ready to dive into 4k then you have it. Even if you don't plan on shooting 4k right away you can still shoot the exact same kind of HD you are shooting now with the GH2 and GH3.

I doubt the crop mode is any different than on the GH3. When the GH3 records HD you are not getting some odd funky FOV. You get the FOV the camera can do. Why should 4k be any different?

Honestly I hope it is using the same body as the GH3. This means all the accessories built just for the GH3 should work great with the camera. This would also encourage more accessory manufacturers to design products like loupes designed just for the GH3/GH4k.

The one concern I have is the low light performance of 4k video on this camera. A big part of why higher ISO levels look good on the GH3 is the binning process. If the sensor on the GH4k is basically the same pixel resolution then you will get the ISO performance of what the GH3 does for stills. Not that it is bad just you may notice a bit more noise shooting 4k video or not want to push the ISO as hard when shooting 4k. Think of how the sensitivity drops when shooting ETC on the GH3. With ETC you basically grab 1x1 pixels just like the 4k mode would. We all know when shooting ETC we cannot go as high with the ISO and we start to notice noise a lot sooner. Thats why those you think they will shoot 4k to be able to zoom into the shot later need to a bit careful. Doing so will basically end up looking like ETC video from the GH3 if you have to use higher ISO levels.

For me the biggest advantage to a GH4k is to treat it like a GH3 where I can shoot alias and moire free video and downscale myself in post to a darn good looking HD master at near 4:4:4.

Would a 4K Micro 4/3's cams require specific lenses or the m43 being used on HD versions; GH2/GH3, etc. can be mounted to 4K?

I guess I'm a bit confused after seeing a thread about "4K prime lenses" (not Panasonic), yet posters here talking about using past lenses.

Its a matter of lens quality than mounting

4k requires 4x the resolution
if crappy lenses cant resolve atleast 4k, images would be soft.

I can't imagine the lenses not being able to work well on a 4k camera, considering they are mostly photography lenses which are way above 4k.

The lenses are going to be fine. It is always the same. At the end of the day they work fine. The quality of the 4K codec is also going to be fine. Always, always, always the "experts" in here making statements before all the info is in. Never ceases to happen every time new cameras or new technology is announced. We have to wait until all the facts are in to make any intelligent assessment about it. But at the end all these new 4K technology is here to stay and help produce some beautiful imagery by those who are truly talented an will make it sing.

Me too on both counts! I'm really wishing its the same body for this new camera!!
