Panasonic 4k camera system info & updates

No, that's what it says....
might be the limit of what can be processed and handled.
That's disappointing. 4K and QHD are pushing 4 times the number of pixels as HD, yet it's limited to 100Mbps. I know this camera offers a lot, and we haven't seen any 4K footage yet, so it might not matter, but it makes me nervous...

It just might be like the GH1 was with HD. Great on static shots but too low of a bit rate for heavy/complex details and motion. Hopefully, they've already given the camera to a few testers and the footage will tell more.

Then again, I'm perfectly happy with 1080p at 24Mbps in the GH3, so that translates to roughly the same compression as 4K at 100Mbps, right?

Yeah, the footage will tell all. No need to get worked up about specs until we see what the camera can actually do with all those bits and pixels.

Regardless, I'm still getting it.

If the FHD is close to the maximum date rate then 4k has to have a higher compression ratio in order to compensate. So, yes, the quality of 4k will technically be less, but I think that's what you get for higher resolution.

But what about the bitrate? Only 100Mbps in 4K and QHD? What the heck? Or am I misreading it?

It seems like they crippled the GH4 on purpose. I think what's going on is they improved the GH3 tremendously, what they're not showing (what we all want) won't be announced till NAB. IMHO the stage is set for a mid range camera above the GH4 and below the Vari cam. Looks like we're gonna see a successor to the AF101. ND filters, 200 MBps, real cine gammas, maybe even 2k RAW or something crazy. It will go after the fs700s jugular, (quality) high frame rates and all. There's nothing to touch the fs700, especially with the F5 still relatively new. I believe the midrange camera will be a perfect chance for Panasonic to gain some more market share. It's a no brainer. I own an fs700, love it, but if I can have a smaller foot print, robust image, variable frame rates with out adding any expense for an external recorder I'm in! I can't see it being priced more than the fs700, it would certainly take some business from Sony. Just my guess, I'm probably more confused than you and that little scenario was the best I can come up with. I'm sure it will be a nice camera but right now RGB 444 12-bit excites me more than a lower bit 4k. Idk, I could be wrong, and you can get RGB 444 1080p out of a 10 bit 422 4k signal but I think the next go around should get real interesting. Just my 2 cents
Thanks

From what I understand, when it comes to compression just because you have four times as many pixels doesn't mean you need four times the bitrate.

Take a look at this. This guy argues that for a 4K blu-ray spec you could fit 120fps 4K footage nicely into 50Mbps. Granted he is talking distribution format, but if his numbers are right, 24fps 4K at 100Mbps should be decent enough for acquisition.

Interesting! Thanks for the link. That makes me feel a lot better about the bitrate at 4K.

I know the GH4 won't be a RED Dragon killer or anything like that. But I am genuinely excited by this camera and its potential. :)

*3 Setting the HDMI output picture quality

[4:2:2 10bit]:You can output the image through the HDMI connection in higher picture quality, but you cannot record it as a motion picture or still pictures. Ideal when the HDMI output is to be saved on external devices.

[4:2:2 8bit]:You can record the image while outputting it through the HDMI connection. Ideal for recording while checking the motion picture on an external monitor. When using 4:2:2 / 8-bit output, video is recorded in 4:2:0 / 8-bit on SDXC/SDHC Memory Card.

At first I thought this implied 4:2:2 8-bit internally to SD card, but now I think I was mistaken.

Seriously. Why can't it do 4K or QHD at 200Mbps? Why is it limited to 100Mbps in 4K when it can do HD at 200Mbps? 4K and QHD are the resolutions that need the highest bitrate!
Because the 200mbps mode is All-Intra, and the 100mbps mode is long-GoP. It sounds like if they tried to do all-Intra for 4K, it'd take up 800mbps, and that's just unreasonable to record. Apparently they feel they can get the quality high enough using the long-GoP system at 100mbps.

They've said 4:2:2 can be output at either 8 bit or 10 bit through HDMI - Whan HDMI is output at 8 bit 4:2:2 you can have simultaneous footage recorded to the card (which will only be 4:2:0) Simultaneous recording to the card can't be done when outputting 10 bit through HDMI
