Panasonic president says– GH5 firmware to enhance performance might be developed if there is customer demand. - How do we demand it? Lets get going on this....does anyone know a contact method?

I would love to have 400Mbps H.265 long GOP for 4K/6K 24/25/30 and 60p.
Also having some better noise reduction for the blue channel might not be a luxury.

Ok, fine, as a customer I demand it! :p

Are they really going to listen? Really? Or are these "demands" only from a select few that probably have enough money to ditch the GH5 and buy the GH5S to go with their other cameras? I'm guessing the second and anyone that bought a GH5 will be at this feature set with maybe a few bug fixes down the orad (if Panasonic has time).

I think it all boils down to what can be done with the amount of processing power the GH5 has, so things like 400 Mbps h.265 long GOP and 4K 60p are probably not possible without more powerful hardware. ( i.e. Wait for GH6 to come along in 2 years )

I have my doubts, we know that writing 400Mbps is already possible, and encoding H.265 with 200Mbps or 400Mbps is not going to make much of a difference processing wise, in general it take less processing the less compression you use.
60p may indeed be a bridge too far.

I would not be so sure of this. The h.265 CODEC is much more demanding compared to h.264 when both encoding and decoding image data, and the general idea behind raising bit-rates for long GOP CODECs is to pack in MORE detail. If h.265 200 Mbps recording has exactly the same amount of detail as h.265 72 Mbps recording, then why bother ? To get a h.265 file that is easier to decompress ? ...I don't think so.

People want more detail in the higher bit-rate file, and this is going to require more processing power to properly encode this extra detail when compared to a less detailed lower bit-rate file.

H.265 is much more processor intensive to both encode and decode.
H.265 is more efficient than H.264 so that a lower bit rate H.265 file may be of similar quality to a higher bit rate H.264 file.
At the same bit rate the H.265 should be better quality.
One reason to use H.265 is create smaller files (yet maintain quality that would require bigger H.264 and even bigger still uncompressed files).
If you need to upload files to a server, where internet connection speed may be an issue or you have to consider storage space, the H.265 files would have an advantage over H.264.

I'm less cynical of Panasonic I suppose....which is another reason they get my business...and the GH5 is not exactly a slouch....in fact...if it turns out the GH5s does not have 14stops of DR...as seems to be the case that's unfolding, I'll just keep saving my money for the camera I really want....the LT...I think Panasonic really does try, and care, in as much as any corporation can, while still managing to stay in business...the GH5s is not a replacement for the GH5 in my or many others' opinion...and the GH5 is turning out to be quite simply one of the most enjoyable cameras I think one can shoot with, and thinking in terms of time is money on a shoot, also one of the most economical...it's just that quick to get an additional or alternative shot.

I demand:

-showing exposure info in video modes (aperture,ss and iso)
-HLG profile in 8bit modes too (4k60P).
-slowly blinking red recording dot should be fixed
-6k photo with 16:9 ratio and working AFS

Thank you Mr President!

Mr Panasonic President,

I would like to see added to the GH5 features:

- ability to punch in ETC during recording, and turn it off during recording, 6K anamorphic mode is what I use.
- some signal out of HDMI during 6K anamorphic recording, not looking for external recording, looking for at least 1920x1080 for use as a focus adie.

どうもありがとうございます

This is not possible because the sensor is less than 6000 pixels wide. It is closer to 5000.

I ment 5.180k with 16:9 :)

I also want working AFS/AFC lever for video or continuous video AF on/off FN-option.
AF+MF fine adjust should work without first pressing half shutter.
Focus pull function would be nice to have an option to easily just go to some one predefined point from anywhere.
EX-tele change during recording would be nice too.

Just so people are aware. I'm pretty sure Panasonic doesn't read this forum so any suggestions posted will likely not be seen. Its fun to discuss desired features but if any of you are really serious you will need to find a more direct way to influence Panasonic. Email, phone, find somebody that does have a direct line to somebody that can pass up the requests. For example all those people that got to review the GH5s early. Clearly those people have some sort of line of communication. Reach out to those people.

Okay, maybe Panasonic is not reading this forum, but this thread could be a place to collect our points for the request (anybody here with a direct connection to Panasonic?)

So here is my list:

- 400Mbit h.264 long gop for better Quality 4K 10bit recording

- blinking red recording dot should be turned into a constant red dot

- when switching on the camera and a full manual lens is attached, the display asks if the focal length has changed. Here you should automatically have the four or five last used focal lengths to choose from.

- I love the extended teleconversion. With its 1.4x crop it turns my 12mm into a 16.8mm with a button click - this is one of the best functions on this camera. And there is the 2x digital-zoom function, which is sometimes not bad at all when you really need more reach. What if you combine these two functions in one menu item, directly selectable via a function button? And you could preset the values you prefer, e.g. 1.0x, 1.2x, 1.4x (ext. teleconverter) 1.6x, 1.8x, 2.0x…

- E-Stabilization directly to turn on/off via a custom button

- Possibility to assign two separate custom buttons with AF-Lock and AE-Lock

- further improvement of the video autofocus

  • Rear/Front Dial locking - function available on the G9
  • Visible ISO, Aperture, Shutter values when using a Program mode
  • Ability to perform AF-Lock before recording in VFR (So at least you can AF sort of)
  • Ability to assign the control dials, jog dial to SS, Aperture or ISO, in any order you require
  • 48fps with sound and AF (non VFR)
  • True 'One-Touch' Manual WB. Point at subject, press Fn button and hey presto white balance is set and you are ready to shoot (without have to do WB, Up, Set)
  • Ability to toggle HDMI Info overlay On/Off via an Fn command
  • Standardise the menu system of the GH5 to incorporate the menu layout improvements from the GH5s
  • Instead of the Flower / Mountain MF Scale, provide actual Mts/Ft where the focus is
  • If using a program mode and if the camera is unable to provide adequate exposure, display the actual exposure reading (-3 on the scale for example) and not just -/+ icon.
  • Add the option to display both Degrees and Gain at the same time instead of ISO/SS
  • Ability to use the focus-by-wire on Panasonic lenses in a linear fashion, so you can use 3rd party focus gearing

Well, Mitch Gross has about 812.433 posts on these boards, so there's that.

He's officially tied to the Cinema line of cameras I think, but it's better than nothing. Your suggestion to reach out to reviewers is probably a good one too.

But I mean....

Panasonic: "We'll increase performance—if there is customer demand"

Customer: "Aaww! Thanks, that is really nice! You guuuuys!!! Honestly… no need, I'll take less performance. Thanks for asking!"

Maybe that's the reason for Canon's sometimes questionable approach to firmware updates and customer relations: they're certified dimwits and really don't know what we want?

Panasonic might be up for dimwit recertification, and they're also not sure what we want, but at least decided to ask first?

I understand the impulse to ask for higher bit rates. If the camera can record at 400 mbs in some modes, why not all?

Understand that with H.264 and H.265 long GOP there is a diminishing return with increased bit rate. At a certain point, throwing more at it does not improve PQ, it's just waste. This is especially true with H.265. It feels good to ask for 400mbs, but that's just an arbitrary number. Maybe 200mbs is right. Maybe it's 327.65. Maybe it's 150.

Also, consider that H.265's *interframe* compression isn't that much better than H.264's. It's real gains come from intraframe compression. An all-I version of H.265 isn't as likely to yield much better results than H.264, but will be less compatible and harder to work with.
