Pampuri AF100 "Kyoto Avec l'AG-AF101 Panasonic"

The clips you have seen so far, are not it. They are off-the-cuff, handheld, first-footage stuff. Nothing that should be used to judge, because none of this footage has been from shooters in controlled conditions who have properly profiled the camera and used it to its best effect. In other words, what you've seen has no bearing on what the unit will be capable of. So getting bent out of shape or upset or worried, is not an appropriate reaction.

I am not cencerned about how the camera will work in controlled conditions. I have seen what an HMC150 can do when I take the time. It is how it behaves in less controlled conditions like the kind you experienced in Japan... I have shot folks outdoors and had a perfect shot, everything looking nicely exposed... and then... a person just slightly turns their head and their forehead picks up more light from a glancing source... and boom. Orange highlights and clipped skin tones.... This happens very quickly.

Wonderful footage- shows range of the camera nicely, and I like how you tie the tools, photographer and the images in this collage of footage.

Emmanuel, do you think you can use the Panasonic GH2 with the AF100 footage, or if not what major differences do you see between them?
Maybe i have to change my nickname her ... hi, i'm Emmanuel,
As you can see it on my blog i post a new video shot with the GH2 prototype camera. I think the 2 images from GH2 and AF101 will match well together.
GH2 will be the perfect B camera for AF101

Thank you for sharing my work on this so great forum.

Emmanuel was kind enough to share a whole 8 minutes of GH2 footage (more than anyone else has shown to date), and you can get an idea of what it looks like hand-held in comparison to the AF100.

So, I just happen to show my wife all 3 AF100 clips on the bigscreen this weekend from Philip, Filipo, and Emmanuel, and she says- "forget waiting for that Red camera, get this one" ...

For Jan and Barry: no apologies necessary for the AF100 footage, my wife now says OK to Panasonic thanks to the non-scripted footage!
(BTW: get the BBC a copy with a stock lens to bless it so we can take that arguement off the table ASAP already!)

Yes, we were eating popcorn ... she said NOTHING about any technical issues... so it passed the popcorn test!
I saw 3 different artists using the same tool with different lenses, different styles and different results over roughly the same shooting day...
You got a great tool, just let us have it as planned and don't starve us at the launch as retailers are saying good luck getting one any time soon
due to the tremendous demand...

I am very glad real-world footage with common lenses was shown rather than carefully crafted set footage
with Zeiss Ultra-Primes going out to 200mbit/sec external storage devices was shown... my wife never saw that, and I think it's only relevant to those
with much larger budgets than the lion's share of your customer base. I think the negative comments this week show more about the attitudes and budgets of the posters than the capabilities
of the $4995 camera. If negative feedback is what you want, I'm sure if you go over to Red**** next month after the release, the fanbase will comply...
I'm sure you'll get test charts and graphs about why the camera and codec sucks in the near future...
Who wants that? If it doesn't meet your needs, stick to renting Red/Arri for $5K+/week and
stop complaining and shouting down people with $5K to spend on a body right now...

BIG THANKS for allowing us to see what artists can do in a day with a prototype without a user manual, with a tripod or handheld in available light we will likely face with lenses we likely have day-in, day out...

Thanks God that we have the choice of not buying this camera or any other camera around that we think will not allow us to make the blockbuster we are sure will be able to finish once we get it. If when it is finally released anybody think is not up to their standards then don't buy it. It has been said repeatedly that Panasonic CHOSE a group of highly profiled individuals from the industry and it is working with THEM, not anybody ranting here when they look at these clips. It is a total waste of energy.

Emmanuel! Welcome to the forum, and thanks for making yourself available for answering questions and such!

Hello Barry, i was only a reader, i'll try to participate more but my English is not always understandable ...
I spent a very good time with you and all the people in Osaka.
Take care & hope to see you soon ... maybe at NAB

From what I've seen of the various Japan clips, the AF100 image processing is much like my HPX170. I'm not getting the sense that latitude is improved very much with the AF100, but it's early days for that assessment. More conservative exposures would have helped to a point. I shoot in Cine D most of the time and am used to seeing the super chroma highlights in uncontrolled situations. The other gammas are too contrasty for my taste. This is true of the HVX200/200A and HPX500 as well. It affects skintones in the same way. It is very different than when I shoot in uncontrolled situations with my HPX2700 in Film-Rec 600% DR. In the case of the latter, highlight handling is much more like film, but the footage definitely requires grading due to the compression of mid-tones and mid-blacks. I am afraid to underexpose my HPX170 due to in-camera noise and codec limitations of DVCPRO HD vs. AVC-Intra 100 in the 2700.

I really think that at least a mild DRS setting would help the AF100 in uncontrolled contrast scenes, if the added noise isn't an issue. The problem with lowering the knee point is the risk of skintone compression, and I'm not convinced that the camera has the menu control to address the A-D processing limitations inherent at this price point--therefore DRS seems like a good option.

Dino,

is it your feeling that using an external recorder and bypassing the codec could have remedied these situations?

Nice vid. Saw a nanoflash partway through it. Has any of the footage shot by all the guys been nanoflash footage that was edited and uploaded? I am assuming that the majority of it was AVCHD?

Cheers

A better codec such as AVC-Intra 100 will lower the noise floor, thus providing a gain in latitude. For example, my HPX2700 gains a stop of latitude when using Intra vs. DVCPRO HD due to the improved noise at the bottom end. Intra does have the advantage of being a 10-bit codec. Having said that, my guess is that AVCHD at PH level is a clean codec vs. the DCT compression of DVCPRO HD, therefore I wouldn't expect highlight handling or latitude of the AF100 to look different with ProRes vs. AVCHD, especially since 8-bit is all that is available out of the camera.

DRS is the same as Film-Rec for highlight handling, at least in the higher-end Panasonic 2/3" cameras, so I'd expect it to be useful for highlight handling with the AF100. The 32-bit A-D processing in the HPX2700 coupled with the 10-bit record codec makes for very good tonality that just isn't present in a $5K camera to date, but DRS might just be the answer when a 20'X20' silk is not in the budget!

Filippo Chiesa brought along a Nanoflash with him. Nobody else had one. All the footage you're seeing from Vicenc, Emmanuel, Philip or me, has all been native codec. I don't know what Filippo uploaded, whether it was from the native codec or from his Nano.

I know tha Filippo didn't include any nanoflash mpeg2 iFrame 100mb footage in this footage. He didn't had enough time but he wanted to do a special edit with a split screen AVCHD/Nanoflash to compare.
I also did some footage in AVC Intra, i hope to have time ASAP to show you the diference.

Thanks for the update. So that means that everything we've seen from everyone so far has been all native AVCHD. And that Filippo wants to do a comparison against the Nano at some point in the future, and you want to do something similar with AVC-Intra, but right now, what people have been looking at, is the AVCCAM footage.

Thanks for clarifying!
