pal gh-1 or 7d

I'm hard pushed between the 7d and gh-1. I'm mainly interested in music videos. I'd like the 60fps and 24p that the 7d can do. But I'd prefer the look of the GH-1.

Also, I'm in the UK. So GH-1 doesn't have 24p or 60fps

7d image seems to hold together better.

but again, I prefer the look of 24p GH1. If only the UK GH1 had 24p and 60fps I'd be sold.

I'm stuck between GH1 25p/50 with nicer look and autofocus but no 24p or 60fps or 7D 24p/25p/30/50/60fps with not so nice look and no autofocus. If only I lived in the US!

Any opinions / advice?

With all respect...I'm just wondering how many threads like this are you going to start? This is your second one with the same question.....and the topic could get ugly really fast. trust me...

With all respect... this isn't a duplicate post. As mentioned in the other thread which contains a link here, I'm hoping to get an equal portion of GH1 and 7D users' opinions. It wouldn't make sense to limit this question to e.g. GH1 users only. I have asked everyone to reply to this thread.

I SERIOUSLY don't know how you can like the GH1 look better than the 7D! I've owned both cameras and honestly the only thing better about the GH1 in my eyes in the movable LCD screen which comes in quite handy when the camera is down low or up high. But seriously thats all i prefer.

Get the 7D all day long ;)

I was in the same situation as you months ago. I basically watched a million 7D and GH1 clips on Vimeo. I wanted to like the GH1 better because I have a bunch of Canon FD lenses and would've saved a bundle.

But after looking at all those clips, I have to say the 7D just has a much more pleasing aesthetic IMO. Better colors, better low light and the extra X-Factor that the GH1 doesn't have.

Like I said, I really wanted to want the GH1, but I bought the 7D in the end almost grudgingly because of the FD lens issue.

Plus, Canon is really pushing the DSLRs (maybe because they don't really have as much of a video camera market to cannibalize), while Panasonic is obviously holding back (probably because they have a huge video camera market). From all the posts I've read, the GH1 just feels more purposely crippled than the 7D.

The strange thing is, I work in TV Commercials and Motion Graphics. in Los Angeles, and in the last 6 months, I've known quite a few studios and very talented individuals that have bought the 7D; and not a single person has bought anything Panasonic since the 7Ds arrival.

Wasn't there talk about a GH2? I thought I read something in a thread. Anyway my friend has a GH1 and he always wants to borrow my 7D. I guess that says alot, lol.

The GH1 has always looked vastly inferior to my eye, and that was BEFORE the Zacuto Camera Shootout that finally released today. Go watch the tests and see for yourself.

cheers guys I went for the 7D in the end. Got it today! Bit disappointed as the video cuts out after 2 seconds. I also read nightmares about dropped frames on some makes of CF card. What CF cards are you guys using that work well? I'll see if I can order another.

Yup- good call. Loves me some Panasonic but in this market segment they are not the best choice presently.

ScanDisk are great. You should buy one with a high transfer rate. My 1st were 15mbps. They worked fine for me but I have up grade since then. Transfer took way too long. Go to the 30mbps or higher and you should be alright. They are a bit more expensive but worth every penny. Just make sure your card reader is firewire for higher mbps cards. I believe you can buy up to 64gb cards now with a transfer rate of 90mbps now for around $400-$600 I believe. Someone please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Dropped frames and data recording interruption are both issues caused by not having a high enough data rate on the CF card. Make sure when you purchase a CF card, it is labeled UDMA, which is a the title for high data rate cards. Mine are both 60mb/s which is plenty.

Is it true they tweaked and set up the 7D properly, but used the stock settings on the GH1? I seemed to have read that somewhere? Yes? No?

Do you mean 60MB/s? I have a 30 MB/s Sandisk extreme III and a newer UDMA 60MB/s Sandisk extreme. I think both should be ok though because the record rate is almost an order of magnitude lower than 30MB/s.

I got the 60mb/s 16gb one
