FS5: Paid RAW Upgrade in June 500€ / 600$

btw..

Sony FS5 = 5200€
Raw upgrade = €500
Odyssey 7Q+ =1850€
Sony Raw Licence = 990€
Battery solution = 500€
Media for raw = 1000€
Total = 10,040€ (net)

So the economical FS5 with modest 4K is now a 10k monster?

That also comes with a quad input OLED monitor with LUTs and 120fps 4K and 240fps S35 2K recording which no other camera system in that price range has.

Also the Media isn't that expensive. And the RAW license is discounted to $795 at the moment. And I use a 7Q battery solution that costs $100 and lasts all day. The 7Q+ comes with 256GB SSD and you can use off the shelf SSDs or just record 4k prores. I mostly use 4k ProRes LT anyway since anything else gets a bit ridiculous and unnecessary unless maybe you are doing VFX work. Of course any 4K RAW will be expensive when it comes to media, and who really wants to deal with 100-400MBps footage anyway??

I admit my math was kind of provocative ;.)

Instead of using the 4K ProRes LT out of the 7Q chunk I prefer internal XAVC-I with the FS7

If that's what your clients prefer that's fine. I deal with so many clients that are very happy and relieved when I can deliver ProRes files since it fits into so many existing workflows without plugins or any extra work/cost to them.

the Atomos Inferno has Quad input, does RAW and 4K and is a heck of a lot cheaper solution than the Odyssey (no need for $1000 RAW license or super-expensive media).

Several people have asked me about this, misunderstanding what it means. The competitor's product offers "Quad-SDI", which appears to mean that it is for recording signals that need four SDI connection, such as the F55 shooting 4K60p. It is not multicamera.

Has anyone seen any footage or knowledge about bit depth? Find it strange that they announce this as an upgrade next month and didn't have at least a proto build at NAB

Guessing here, but highly doubt you'll see anything higher than 12 on these prosumer models.. 14-16bit will be saved for the big boys.

FS700/O7Q still killin it softly. Just not ergonomically of course.

Did you really expect that you get sth at the time any supplier in the film business announces availability for his product? :embarasse
Don't expect it for Sony. From the experience with Convergent Design's roadmap vs reality a month delay is not worth mentioning.
If it comes soon: fine. But you don't better make plans to use it in the near future

Wow!

They going to do anything for my FS7?

4K 120fps and 240fps@2k is sounding tempting

What is a "Sony Raw License". Can't I just buy the 600.00 RAW upgrade, then SDI cable to an ATMOS Shogun and be done with it?

It all depends. What do you want? The Odyssey 7Q+ is the monitor/recorder
that gives you all the high frame rates (continuous 240fps at 2K,
continuous 60fps at 4k and buffered (approximately 4 seconds) 120fps at 4k.
For this to work, you must buy the 'Raw license' from Convergent Design.
It usually costs $995 but is on sale for $795 through the end of April.

The Atomos Shogun can record the Sony Raw and you don't need to purchase
an additional license.....but you don't get the high frame rates so it only
works for normal frame rates. However the new Atomas Inferno,
which was announced at NAB (and has the HDR screen) claims to be
able to record limited HFR stuff from the FS700 (which is the exact same
feature set as the FS5 as far as the Sony Raw goes.)

We do a ton for the FS7 with the RAW output that comes out of the XDCA back. 4K60p and 2K240p. The FS7 doesn't have the frame buffer to offer the 4K120p burst.

The Odyssey7Q+ offers more support for FS RAW than any other device.

I am probably waiting for the Inferno if I can't get 240fps continuous of 4K60 with the Shogun Flame. It's hard to tell if I can get that with the Shogun after reading the B&H writeup that states, "Combined with compatible external recorders such as the Convergent Design Odyssey 7Q+ or Atomos Shogun, which can record or interpret the FS5 raw stream, very high-quality 4K footage can be recorded at up to 60 fps. Continuous high-speed 2K output is also enabled, for raw recording at up to 240 fps."

And I think the SHogun has an HDR screen too according to this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbRKGfSL2Ds

All I really want is continuous HFR at ProRes quality recording. RAW is over the top for the work I do. Nice to have on hand, but practically speaking it's literally a waste of space. But man, having the Atmos even just as a monitor is amazing.
