P2cms improvements....

Not sure if the CORRECT people are going to see this but here goes...

1) V.Important.... enable the location of the database to be totally user specified and NOT the current location of the ROOT of the drive.

2) Enable better metadata search options i.e. being able to search specific metadata fields rather than lumping them all together for the search.

3) Allow the drag and drop from the database window into FCP rather than having to find the actual .MXF file in the file system.

4) Get rid of the ´default´ if there is no data for a specific field

5) Resize the P2 viewer window so there are no need for scroll bars.

6) Allow the database to ´see´other databases without havign to import them.... I´me currently travelling through Central and South America and have 2 databases 1 on my MBP while in the field and the other on a backup d2 Lacie. at the moment I have to ingest the 2 into one to be able to see both sets of clips without flicking databases.

7) Sort out the spelling mistakes in the program and the Japanese English of the user manual!

Cheers

Indy... In Mexico with my HVX!

How about the ability to "grey out" clips you have already used or transfered, or the ability to highlight the clip you currently have selected at all times.
Maybe just have a click box to grey out as needed, so you don't continue to try to tansfer the same file over and over again.

Oh yeah, and what about the ability to rename the clips?

It would also be good if you could erase or format the card using P2CMS.

Ah, and now that I upgraded to leopard it would also be nice if P2CMs worked.

Barry repeatedly states that most HVX200 users are Mac based, and the numbers confirm that.

Panasonic repeatedly appears PC centric, which is opposite the its primary target market for the HVX200.

I have no issue with the company releasing PC software, but it might want to focus a little more and more often on most of its user base and stop the Mac marginalization.

When the p2cms app for the Mac was released it already was incompatible with the current version of QT. We're now at 7.3 and no updates have been released by Panasonic. To me at least, some one is asleep at the wheel at Panny.

Great cam -- love it -- but how can it miss its target OS market so consistently?

Oh well.

General Apple market share is between 6% and 7% as of Dec 07.
With the well-known and better presence in the media business (prepress, ...).

A good luck would be to have a Cupertino QT developer being fond of Panasonic...
... With a buddy across Pacific, being a Panasonic developer, worshipping his Mac!

Some ideas to resolve the "crisis" ?
1- They need to communicate, could we introduce them each other?
2- Have they a good Foreign Affairs department?
3- Could DVXUser trigger a diplomatic mission to reconciliate the 2 parties?
4- Arranging a MSN online for Christmas across Pacific?
5- Collecting our cents and sponsor some developper hours given to our POOR Mister Panasonic, surrounded by ugly, unfashioned & weak PCs ?
6- Boycotting & buying Sony (No...)

Poor indy guys neglected about a small piece of (candy) software,
where BIG guys, at Panasonic, deal with:
BIG editorial news systems, ingesting
HUGE quantity of P2s, into a
FORREST of networked PCs spreaded on
ENDLESS open spaces.

A beggar at PANASONIC HQ lobby entrance, exhibiting his useless Mac:
"Please, please, Mister Panasonic, to feed my disks!".

Of course, we have a Panny friend, here on Second Life, oops, sorry, here on DVXUser, but she is working in a hardware store!

However, HVX200 users do not follow general computer use. Factor out all the computers with word processing, spreadsheets and data base apps, and you'll see a different pie chart.

And for HVX200 users, Barry estimates the MacOS is about 75% or higher.

I just wish that Mac and PC users would get parity and somewhat better and more frequent updates.

That would be a good first step.

should we start some sort of a petition? the dvxuser base is huge and i think if numbers like that were dropped onto pannys doorstep it might open their eyes a bit.

Problem is, Panasonic isn't a software company. They're a hardware company. They don't make software in general, and they probably would rather not make it at all.

I'm sure they'd much rather rely on guys like P2 Log and Apple to provide software.

As for releasing P2CMS and being "out of date"... how can you blame Panasonic if Apple changes their software to make it incompatible? If Panasonic made it work with the current version of Quicktime, and then Apple goes and breaks it, and then breaks it again with 7.3, how can that be Panasonic's fault? Seems like Apple should make their software work with the existing base of software that's out there, rather than just arbitrarily breaking things, doesn't it?

If I was an Apple user, I'd be pretty ticked if every time I "updated" my OS or Quicktime software, my existing working paid-for apps quit working. And I certainly wouldn't blame Microsoft or Adobe or whoever, I'd blame Apple.

They know all about it. The very existence of a Mac version of P2CMS kind of demonstrates that. But they're a big massive corporation and big entities move slowly.

Besides, again, they're not a software company. I know that isn't what anyone wants to hear, but it's the way things are. The way they see it, they provide basic drivers and that's about where they see their responsibility ending. With P2CMS, it's a freebie, so if it never gets updated or improved, they can shield themselves behind the "hey, it's free, what do you expect?" argument.

So, ask away, file a petition etc., whatever you want to do. Just be aware that they already know.

We disagree on this, I believe respectfully.

If Panasonic isn't in the software business, then they shouldn't be writing software for either platform. Either you are or you're aren't. Kinda like the pregnant thing.

I don't want it updated or improved. I just want it to work reliably on with a Mac. QT 7.1.2 was released this summer. It's now almost 2008

I'm not advocating a position -- I'm relating what I believe they feel their position is. Doesn't mean I agree with it.

I've told 'em that hey, if you want to transition people over to an IT-based workflow, you have to provide end-to-end IT support. Doesn't matter to the customer that you've never provided that before, you have to provide it now. And they should have parity between the Mac and Windows. That's the way I see it, but that doesn't mean they see it the same way.

As for it working with certain versions of software, it should work with the software that's current at the time it gets released. If Apple goes and subsequently does something that breaks it, isn't that Apple's problem to deal with?

Thanks for the response.

As to your last comments, I don't think that is Apple's responsibility, but the developers'.

Historically, that is been the case, and practically, the developer adapts to the platform, rather than the platform trying to adapt to 1000 developers. Otherwise, Apple (or Microsoft for that matter) must decide which developer is must be consistent with rather than all the developers looking at the code, and tweaking.

What it requires is communication and Panasonic isn't, to my view, the poster child for that.

best

That's not what I meant. I meant that if you abide by a system's requirements, and then they go and change it in such a way that it breaks your product, that was bad on their part. Is there no requirement on the system developer to ensure that a simple upgrade doesn't go breaking programs?

But, saying it did -- if it's a for-profit project, yes the practical reality is that now, because of the actions of one entity, a thousand different developers will now have to expend time and energy and effort to adapt. Until when? The next time they break it? There'll come a point where a free application developer will say "to hell with it" and walk away.

Panasonic says they had it working with 7.1, and they no more than release it before it's "broken"... If it's their fault for not properly complying with the quicktime developer's kit, then yes, by all means blame the developer. But if it quit working because of something that Apple changed, then wouldn't the case be that Apple bears responsibility for making sure that their changes *don't* go breaking other people's complying products?

But frankly I don't know if the malfunction was Panasonic's or Apple's fault. I do think it makes a big difference as to who should have to fix it, of course.

That's why the rule of thumb is never update anything on a working machine until it has been verified as safe by the poor saps who download things right away.

Currently we wait a couple of weeks before applying any QT/OS/firmware update to our Macs. We had the same policy with PC's. A simple IT windows update brought down every Avid at EA for two days before someone figured out what changed on the machines and reversed it.

I guess I've just thrown in the towel and expect that you make noise about it and eventually someone fixes it.

What I'd much rather see from Panasonic, on the hardware side, is a relatively cheap, one card, p2 external card slot with firewire or USB, doesn't matter which, for Mac and PC. I know you can add PCMCIA slots to PC's but in the Mac world we're out o' luck outside of some tricky business with very specific PC cards.

Now that is something that is long overdue and would be a most decidedly awesome piece of hardware. I know they have the five card slot but that is stupidly expensive and overkill if you don't intend to edit off the cards.

I don't really ever expect that product to exist, but I can dream can't I?
