P2 Verification/Workflow

I have a question about transfering P2 cards in the field Via laptop and external hardrives. I haven't had a chance to take my HVX out on a big project yet but I plan on using my laptop and external drives with a couple P2 cards.

Is data verification, availible, and or needed when transfering during a shoot?

What works for you?

Do problems with bad transfers ever happen?

How have you solved such problems?

Basicaly i'm just trying to plan a head and know the ins and outs before they happen.

Thanks and good luck,
Tom

Yes, if you use P2CMS.

and or needed when transfering during a shoot?
That's up to you and your level of paranoia; on Windows I've never used it or had an issue.

What works for you?
WinXP on a laptop with a PCMCIA slot. Plug the card in, go to Explorer, drag the CONTENTS and LASTCLIP.TXT over to the hard disk. Then, simultaneously, drag 'em both to an external hard disk. Instantaneous simultaneous/redundant copies.

Do problems with bad transfers ever happen?
Bad transfers can happen when using a Mac laptop if you don't write-protect the cards.

How have you solved such problems?
Never had any issue with a Windows laptop.

Its good to hear that the Windows laptops work so well. Guess I can be glad I kept my Dell 8600 with pcmcia slot rather then upgrading. Thanks Barry

I could get batted down for this but as far as file transfers go the OS is really responsible making sure the transfer is done bit for bit.

I use a mac book and either a P2 store or a PCD 20 as a card reader and have not had a bad transfer since Got my camera in march of '06.

Well, I'm using a MacBook Pro going through the PCI Express slot using the DuelAdapter to transfer P2 cards to two external hard drives. The content file and the text file both transferred fine, or so it seemed. But, now, in trying to import the material into FCP5, the import stops after a few seconds and informs me that the files are either corrupt or incomplete. Right now, I'm very worried about the integrity of my material --- not sure it's been transferred properly. I may wind up calling Panasonic or Duel to find out if this stuff is salvageable. At the very least, I will NOT be using this system for the remainder of the shoot.

Just download the demo of Raylight and see if it works.

If I were to make a guess, I'd say that 95% of transfer/import errors are related to FCP bugs in the import window. So use Raylight and ditch the whole import process, and all your problems *should* go away. Unless there was actually corruption of the data during the copy process, but that shouldn't happen.

If you are on Windows and are really paranoid you could use xcopy with the /v arguement to verify the files after the copy. Its more of a holdover from immature networking technologies, but its still there.

Open a command box and type "xcopy /?" for more info...

If you really want to get slick you could create a batch file (a file of command lines) that would create a new target directory and copy the contents P2 card, verifying for good measure.
