Looks like SD on tape to me -- here they say DVCPROHD/50/25 and DV... why spell out DVCPRO25 and also DV, when the only difference is what media they get recorded to?

http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webap...d=14569&modelNo=AG-HVX200&surfModel=AG-HVX200

And... hey, maybe back in February when that statement was made, maybe there was no plan for tape. But this is two months later... maybe they added it? I don't know, but I'm more convinced than ever that there will be a miniDV tape drive in it.

Or maybe the statement was pure disinformation designed to misdirect. I think it's great if it has tape - and thought it'd pretty much be suicide if it didn't. Let's hope it's all true.

Now, the questions is, WHEN?

If there is a Mini DV tape for SD, then about half of this section of DVX user has been a waste of bandwidth....ok maybe that's harsh since I have been entertained, but all this griping about how "limited" this new camera will be has vanished.

So many resolutions and framerates, seemingly so many recording options...this thing sure sounds like it's going to be worth the hype. This thing would be ideal for almost any kind of shooting.

Actually, I guarantee someone will gripe about something.

"It doesn't align satelites!"

Mmmm, this has now put a spanner in the works!

I had pretty much accepted that the HVX wasn't going to be for me at the moment, really because of the *reported* price of $10K. But if the $10K included P2 media and you could buy the camera for less and still have a tape with SD and an easy upgrade path to HD when needed, then it's looking seriously hot.

Roll on the 18th...........

or if it is under $5,000 without the P2 media,,,,DVX with 16:9 almost,,,,,everyone wins!!

Yeah that's what I was trying to say, but was too excited to string the words together into a proper sentence!

DVPRO 25/50/HD **and DV**

DVPRO 25/50/HD **and DV**

So I read the latest little blurb that confirmed 1/3" CCD native 16:9, but also saw the "and DV" bit when talking about codecs.

DV is outside the standard Panny DVPro codec, right? Why would they support DV, unless they would be going to a standard miniDV tape transport?

Can we start a new speculation thread now? Only 7 days left !!!

:)

Well if it comes out at US$5k without P2 cards, then what's the point? You get some HD camera that you can't record HD with (And possibly not even DVCPRO25), just DV25 to tape. Why bother. Get the JVC100.

I think if you get this camera and don't make use of the HD - you're nuts. And why would you wait for the p2 cost to come down. By then there will be other cameras around.

Aaron

Well, they list DVCPRO50, DVCPRO, and DV as the recording formats on the SPX800 as well, and as far as I know it's an all P2 camera with no tape transport.

Ah, so. Good point.

Nice to see you here harlan (greetings from VT land and LW land).

You getting this camera to supplant your varicams?

Dillon

OK, now I'm confused, because AFAIK the only differences between DV and DVCPRO is the tape type and track pitch. So why advertise both when they are the same when it comes to solid state recording?

Aaron

The SPX800 also has an optional IEEE-1394 interface, so I think implying that either DV support or a 1394 interface could indicate a Tape Transport mechanism in the HVX200 is a little presumptious.

Hey Dillon!!!

Yeah, I'll probably supplant the VariCams with an HVX or two. I'll let you know for sure in a week. :)

I've been a lurker on this board for a while, but I figured that I'd join in on all the HVX fun.

I'm *seriously* looking at purchasing this camera. Without miniDV tape transport I won't be getting the camera anytime soon - don't have the business to support the expense.

7 days will tell.

Harlan you think NewTek will ever get off their doofus and begin to implement HD support in the VT? Like soon? I'm considering looking to another software, which sucks cuz I like editing in TEDit. FCP and avid DV look good now.

Dillon

Hard to say mate, they're going to support HD in the future, that's a certainty. How far in the future, however, is another question entirely. :)

FCP is great by the way. Avid makes a nice app as well. Apple is going to be supporting P2 in FCP - which is great news.

Well I certainly understand the concern Dillon. Depending on the type of work you're shooting, it could be a huge issue. In my end of the world the short load time really isn't a critical issue. While P2 seems like a pricey format, it's a far cry from the Solid State recording systems used in HD filmmaking, for example:

The Venom is awesome!!! It is however, $50K for an 18min 4:2:2 load. Suddenly, P2 doesn't look that bad. :)

harlan

Right now I'm building a business doing event work - p2 isn't quite cut out for it yet. In a year or two, then yes.

I'm working my way towards doing feature films, though. May be moving to your neighborhood in a couple years.
