P2 store

My P2 store loads very slowly into my G4 Mac power book. I use the USB 2.0 cable. It takes about an hour to put in 4GB. I tried a 5 second clip and that took 20 minutes. I have tried other Mac computers. The same problem. I spend the day at Panasonic they test the store on their Mac and PC. The report was that the PC was importing at the correct speed and that the Mac was 4x as slow. Panasonic had no idea about the problem. they gave me contact info to the head of product sales for Panasonic. After I told her I had been at Panasonic all day testing. She said ask if I was using the 2.0 USB cable.

I have talked to many people at Panasonic. No one has a clue. Basically their is no support for this product. Any help would be greatly appreciated. It shouldn't be this difficult.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure what process you are using to copy over stuff from your P2 Store to you Mac, but here are some thing I've learned.

For some reason, and I don' t know why, when I try to manually drag the Content and lastclip.txt file over at the same time, it takes FOREVER. BUT, when I transfer the lastclip.txt file on it's own, THEN transfer the contents separately, it's works really fast. Don't know why that happens, but it's just true.

I understand that it's kind of a pain. This process means you manually transfer you txt files, then you contents files, and that would take a while for 15 different partitions on the p2 Store. That's why I say get the P2 Genie. I just finished a feature and it was so nice to just plug the P2 Store into the Mac. Open P2 Genie. Hit copy. Walk away. It's well worth the price. Here's the link:

Download the demo. Try it. I gaurantee you'll love it.

Harvey,
I was just in NYC with these new p2 stores, and my mouth dropped when I saw that 1 8gig partition was gonna take 1 hour to ingest (times 15 partitions = 15 hours) So for the last 4 days I had no sleep, trying to dump this footage to clear a P2 store for the next day. How long does it take to download if you seperate the text file from the contexts folder?

I do not want to do that again. Brian, how long does it take to dump with a p2 genie? If I am able to push a button and have all my footage sucessfully transfered, AND have a good night sleep, well that is the program for me.

Is this the only option to resolve this problem?

The transfer rate you are getting indicates that you are most likely running at USB 1.1 speeds, regardless of the USB 2.0 cable.

If the P2 Store is not connected directly to the computer and going through a USB hub that is also handling a low-speed USB device such as a keyboard or mouse, that could explain it.

Another possibility is that the P2 Store is in PC mode and not Mac mode. The USB LED on the P2 Store should be ORANGE when connected to a Mac. Instructions on how to change the mode can be found in the P2 Manual.

I had some issues with this as well when I was doing my feature and when you need to dump everything that night before tomorrows shoot it's very frustrating.

I got so frustrated I would turn the P2 off, disconnect and then reconnect and try again and often this would solve the problem. Also, when I would import into FCP using P2 import I would do one file at a time (not just one partition, one file) and it seemed to go smoother and not get bogged down. It's very strange. If it's running that slow it shouldn't be and it seemed to be worth the time to start the process over, as that usually solved the problem.

My set up is very basic. P2 store into USB 2.0 on the powerbook g4, transfering to a g-drive FW800. The same setup I used for the firestore. I set up the P2 store for Mac format (orange light) already, so that is not the issue.

They are some interesting set ups that you guys have been talking about. I am gonna try them all.

bluegrey, when you restarted everything over again, and it was working....what should the download time take?

Brian Peterson is correct! thanks man, I wish I would have known about this before I went to NY, I would have got some sleep. But here is the test I just did.

I imported out of the P2 Store a 6.73 gig file. Only transfering the context folder (to a FW 800 external drive), I got an estimated time of 23 minutes (a far cry from 1 hour download!) but it did even better than the estimate....11 minutes! right where it should be. After the contents was transfered, I then moved in the text file.

Next I will try the P2 genie, they offer a free test trial, If it will load up all the partitions on the P2 store in the same amount of time with just one click of a button, well that will be perfect.

Tried the P2 Genie...you are right man, that is one great piece of software! I love that I only had to push one button and all nine of my partitions were downloaded to my g-drive, and it only took an hour! (the old way would have taken 9 hours) Wish I had this in NY. Now I will never leave without it.

i cried too.. was out on the road shooting with a band.. i'd spend one day shooting and another day transfering from the p2 store.. (one hour each frigging partition) and don't tell me it's because i might not be using USB 2.0 ... every now and then a partition will transfer over in like 7 mins!!!

I used the p2 genie and noticed a bunch of mistakes, in that some of the clips didn't work when i checked it in FCP.. i don't trust it yet..
