P2 - Ready to Kill Myself - Incompleteness in the Clip!

there is something, a formula that people are doing to create the problem. and im gonna go to my grave trying to figure out what it is ; )
That's exactly what I want to see -- that type of dedication, by someone who is capable of solving the problem, applied to exorcising this niggling demon. I would be thrilled to have a bulletproof workflow recommendation that didn't involve jumping through P2CMS hoops.

I am obviously not the guy who can solve this issue. I presented my workflow as one that is guaranteed to avoid problems. Are there other workflows that are guaranteed to avoid problems? Perhaps, but those haven't been identified yet. I am certain that what I showed, will prevent the issue. Of course, the use of ShotPut Pro with full data verification would probably be easier, but that costs money and there's debate over Imagine's licensing, so I used P2CMS as the basis because it's free.

But like I said, I'd much rather step entirely out of the discussion and let you experts come up with a bulletproof workflow and put that up as a sticky, instead of the one that I have now, so -- good luck in your research!

Woah hold on a second.

So I can't take individual clips from that folder and move them into different folders?

They HAVE to all be in the same folder as the "lastclip.txt" file?

For example.

I have a bunch of snowboarders and I'm putting clips I get of them in serperate folders..... so i can't just take clips and put them into a different folder?

Not to thread jack, maybe PM me wgzn. I don't have my HPX yet, but I'm confused.

NO. not like youd typically do with other storage mediums.

i THINK ive heard of some people METICULOUSLY renaming and moving stuff at the card level. but even IF thats possible, its a journey wrought with peril, so id just leave it alone.

you can save out, export, rename and reorganize once you have the footage in your editing software. so there is really no reason for you to change things at the card level. think of a P2 card as a tape. you dont move stuff around on your tape. its just your source.

dont be intimidated. its all way more straightforward than it sounds at this point.

You can move clips around using P2CMS (or P2 Viewer) but you will probably create a lot of issues if you try to move them around at the directory level! P2CMS and P2 Viewer are P2-aware, and therefore they know about all the related files in all the different folders and they will move them together (and also, they'll know about spanned clips and keep them together).

If you want to organize your files and put them in different directories, by all means use P2 Viewer or P2CMS and learn how to use the silly programs (especially P2CMS, it's quite counterintuitive).

If you're not using P2 Viewer or P2CMS, then LEAVE THE DIRECTORIES AND FILES EXACTLY AS YOU FOUND THEM.

Hm this should be intresting, but I'm sure I'll figure it all out when I get the camera. Thanks again Barry and wgzn for the help!

Thanks everyone, two lingering questions:

1. do i need to leave the files from my p2 cards locked or unlocked
and
2. do i need to be worried that my quicktime will not play the video files i am getting from my p2 card

thanks again

1. you dont even need to be in that info window. leave them as you found them
2. im starting to get a little frustrated. as ive told you REPEATEDLY how to get them to play in quicktime...

I went through similar frustrations with that same problem. I ended up taking the P2CMS program off of my Mac Pro and then reinstalled it.

Issue was resolved and I'm now able to play back all clips (New and Old).

wgzn... outstanding workflow method! One I perfer to do because it keeps all data organized.

Hope it helps.

After offloading the files from the P2 card and you are ready to re-use the card to shoot more video, does it matter if you re-format the card, or individually delete the files? Do you ever need to format the card once it has been shot on?

individually delete the files? God, why would you want to go though all that? just reformat the card in camera once its been transferred.
