I am trying to view some footage from p2 that I have backed up on DVD. When I open the P2 viewer and try to set the dvd player on my computer as a virtual card, it will not allow me to view the fooage. Any ideas? Any way to look at footage backed up on DVD?
Thanks
D

Are you trying to view the MXF files, or are these exported video clips?

Also, reading DVCProHD footage off an optical drive will be nearly impossible. The data rate isn't sufficient.

You also have to have preserved the P2 directory structure (with the CONTENTS folder and sub-folders) and LASTCLIP.TXT file on the DVD.

That makes sense... I'm not preserving the folder structure, just copying the clips. I'll do that with the next backup and see what happens. Should I stick with one P2 card to one DVD? Or can I can combine P2 cards if the combined footage is less than the DVD allows? Thanks for the replies!

One 4.3 DVD5 will hold the contents of one 4Gb p2 card. One DVD9 DL will hold the contents of one 8Gb p2 card.

You have to preserve the folder structure. It is absolutely necessary.

You might want to take a peek at the manual.

If you are going to put the contents of two p2 cards on one DVD ROM, it has to contain a folder with the lastclip.txt file and the Contents folder for each

It is possible to combine multiple P2 card contents into a single CONTENTS folder structure -- P2 Genie has this option, for instance.

But since copying one CONTENTS folder over another replaces what is inside the existing folder rather than merging the contents, it would be better to create separate folders for each P2 cards as David suggested if you are doing this manually.

okay, thanks for all the replies... i've copied the structure from P2 to DVD, however, when I open the virtual DVD from the P2 viewer, it will not play the clips. is that because of the data rate? I have no manual for the p2 viewer... where can I get that?

The manual gets installed when you install the program. Look in the directory where you installed P2 Viewer and you'll find PDF manuals there in various languages.
