P2 madness

Thanks for the help in advance...

I have shot a bunch of footage on 3 different HVX 200's and something has gone sideways. I am new to the P2 texhnology and I must be missing something simple somewhere...

When I first attempted to ingest data, I was able to preview it in the import area. Somehow, something has changed and the symptoms are:

I can no longer preview the footage.

Several of the folders (footage ) give me a red exclamation point in the status column when I try to ingest. The folders are showing data but I am not able to ingest. Interestingly too is that there no media start or finish timecode either.

Please send help...

Make sure you are using FCP 5.1 with the newest update (5.1.1 or something like that). They've made massive improvements in handling P2 footage.

You said you were using FCP HD Suite, and I didn't know if this was 4.5 (usually labeled merely as FCP HD).

If so, I would definitely recommend the crossgrade. It cost me 200 smakers and is the only way to go with the HVX.

5.1.2 is the update that not only gives the P2 Import window with previews, but also reads Motion's FX Plug architecture. Then be sure to look up a product called "Conduit"!

FCP 4.0 and 4.5 are offically called "Final Cut Pro HD", and only those two versions bear that name.

Still can't view or ingest

Still can't view or ingest

I am in fact using FCP 5.1.2 yet there is some tripping point that I am just not seeing.

Red exclamation point in the status window of the queue and no in out or time code . Mant of the problem clips are spanned. I am using 8GB P2 cards. 3 HVX cameras. I am reformatting the cards on 2 laptops by unlocking the lastclip.txt and trashing the contents , then reusing the cards.

Any of this sound funny?

What is funny to me is that I have been successful using this very same technique and it has seddenly stopped working and I can't figure out why???

By trashing the contents of the card on the laptop, you are NOT actually re-formatting the card. You are just deleting it's contents, which from what I've heard may look like it is empty but in actual fact may leave information on the card which could eventually corrupt future information. Although I have been successful in using this technique on occasions where I have had to shoot continously for a couple of hours, I try to format the cards in the camera whenever possible to avoid any complications. Panasonic recommends formatting in camera or in a PC laptop with the P2 viewer software.
Have you tried playing the clips in the camera?

Got it working

Got it working

Started by reformatting in the camera and instead of drag and drop, opened FCP and imported from there off of the P2. The only bummer is in how random and order the movie files are stored in your capture scratch... is there any rhyme or reason to this?

Hey Ben. Conduit is dvgarage's compositing app for Motion.

Not certain what this has to do with red exclamation marks on the import window for p2 cards
Quote me properly, "5.1.2 is the update that not only gives the P2 Import window with previews, but also reads Motion's FX Plug architecture. Then be sure to look up a product called "Conduit"!"

I was referring to the fact that along with everything else the 5.1.2 update will do, it also adds the FX Plug architecture for Motion, that Conduit uses. And Conduit runs in Motion or FCP 5.1.2, so it adds even more functionality to 5.1.2, as well as helping out some what with some of the P2 import problems Apple's OS is having. I didn't say Conduit would help the original problem, just that it's an added bonus to the 5.1.2 update, something that will help to a degree with the original problem.

I didn't quote you improperly. I just referenced the comment about Conduit.

FxPlug, Core Image, and Quartz Composer are indeed where Apple is moving for GPU-accelerated visual effects.

I just wrote this review of the architecture and this application:

http://www.lafcpug.org/reviews/review_fxfactory.html

The way you wrote it to me it appeared that Conduit has some relevance to the p2 import problem.
