P2, DuelAdapter, Macbook Pro

Hey I just got a duel adapter for my macbook pro, but anytime i try to use offloading software such as p2cms or shotput pro, it crashes my computer. i'm running leopard and i'm reading that it's a leopard/p2 driver/duel adapter conflict. has anybody encountered this and does anybody have a workaround? i feel unsafe just using click and drag as many people have reccommended against it.

The workaround is to copy the p2 volume to the desktop and work from there.

Don't use either utility. I had repeated crashes with Shotput.

for the last 2+ years i have ONLY copied media using click and drag and ive never had ANY problems whatsoever...

1. create a new folder on your computer/drive.
2. open p2 volume and do a select all (being sure that contents and lastclip are selected)
3. drag that to the folder i just created
4. done.

I agree.

I see some value using these utilities, but just doing a copy to the desktop with the p2 card write protected seems to be the easiest solution.

Seems to me Apple and Panasonic can't seem to get their two technologys to work together in a stable Mac set up.
Leopard is designed for expresscards and using Older PCMCIA technology cause's issues and as the latest Mac OS 10.5.6 up date has shown it all changes yet again.
Tiger 10.4.8 for example was a great OS and worked well with PCMCIA , but it seems we are told to have the latest "Bells n Whistles" and "security" that the current Leopard OS provides, Who knows the mooted Snow Leopard OS will most likely make many products redundant as Vista did to the windows OS.
Fun Times ahead.

All most Video professionals want is a stable platform to be able to "create programs", not waste their time and money chasing software and hardware issues down, It may lead to a sitaution as some "Stills" guys I know who have gone back to film to keep thier sanity and"Have a life".

i've been reading from barry's post that copy and paste/click and drag can cause a critical error with p2 footage. i guess if there is no work around that's what i'll have to do it like so. hate that i spent the money on shotput and it doesn't work. at least i can still use it for ex1/red footage

as do i. i guess the important step is to spotcheck the footage before u format the card, which should be done no matter what anyway. thanks

For Two years now I've "Draged n Dropped" the MXF files (for back-up) onto many drives windows n Mac with no problems, Then I do a "Log n Transfer" from the P2 cards into FCP onto my Macpro's working Raid 0 drives, no problems, I also don't flick the P2 card protect tab have so far had no issues.
In my opinion If P2 required ingest software Panasonic would have supplied it. But I can see that there's good stuff out there for those that need it. So many of us have widely vary needs re our workflow.

well my favorite thing about shotput pro is that it could offload to multiple locations at once/automated file labeling/byte by byte verification and formatting at the end of it if i so deemed it to. it makes my job as DIT on set a lot easier, plug the card and click offload and i can go back to spot checking previous shots on other cards. it's more for the sake of convienance and to shave off that little bit of time workflow wise.

But if you are having kernel panics, it's not a good process.

Why not mount via FW or USB2 and use Shotput Pro from that source?

We do, it is called P2CMS, or P2 Viewer. I do reccommend using a program that runs a verify on the data. It doesn't take that much more time and would make me more confident about wiping a card clean.

But that is just me,

Jan

Hi Jan,

I stand corrected, I forgot about those , Probably because most guys use the Non Pana supplied programs to do more tasks than what the Pana supplied programs do.

Maybe P2CMS should be updated to do "Verification" and multiple location copying etc.

P2CMS does verification, when you export clips from the card to a hard disk you can choose to have it do a bit-for-bit data verification of the copied contents.

P2CMS does do verification. The reason that guys use other programs is that there are other features offered by those programs which are very attractive in a data rich world.

Best,
Jan
