P2 Cards - got me again @#$%!

Dudes with P2 loss... are you using the write-protect switch on the P2 card before inserting it into your computer? That's what I'd do. If you need to format it in the computer, or erase it, I'd keep it write-protected until everything was copied, then erase!

I have the insomniac computer. It never sleeps, there is no screensaver, the harddrive never spins down. My guess is there is a bug/corrupted pref/conflicting extension. It's highly unlikely that you got all the exploding Pintos. Did you use the same computer to dump the files? If not wow you are horribly unlucky don't fly. If it is the same computer I say you have the culprit. The solution......hard to say, I've abused cards and never had any problems, perhaps it's in the camera? Again, what is the constant?

Since I've had this rig and the relatively limited use it's seen - for me I'd say the P2 data disappearing act has been a pretty common occurance.

Perhaps Panasonic would like to come follow me around for a few days and we can find all the weak points of the system.
If you can actually make something like this happen, then yes I bet they'd be quite interested in doing exactly that. Send a PM to Jan Crittenden. The bugs with the Apple system bug me to no end, and everyone likes to point fingers, but as an ex-programmer I can tell you that there's nothing so valuable as a REPEATABLE circumstance.

As someone who has had issues, not with P2 as I'm not a P2 user but with hard drives, I must ask. Has anyone taken a look at the HD's running in these laptops? I for one have had issues with one HD manufacturer in particular and was wondering if there was any correlation between the hardware and P2 copy failure.

Seriously dudes (oh man I'm getting so Californian!),

There are clear ways to test and protect the whole process.... use the write protect when dumping footage. If ever a computer is able to "corrupt" a write-protected card, then the P2 card has a problem. If as P2 card gets corrupted when it's always write protected in the computer, but not in the camera, then either the card or the camera has a problem.

Compared to using a HDD, this is one of the great benefits (to me) of the P2 cards - the ability to write-protect footage until I can make sure it has transferred correctly. I've had HDs BOTH get trashed during a drive-to-drive transfer; I wish there were a simple, solid write-protect feature for that!

So, if you are paranoid like me and want to absolutely minimize the chance of problems, write protect when using that flakiest of devices - the general-purpose computer. I'd be real interested to hear if anyone following this approach EVER has ever lost footage from a P2...

I'll be out shooting all night Tuesday. I'll make sure that's how I do it and we'll see what happens.

I guess that means you still have your job, congrats on that victory. Good luck on your shoot.

How do we do this on a Macintosh computer?

Thanks>>>

Bump. How do you upgrade the firmware?

please Ben, help us here..

please Ben, help us here..

Yeah, I started one of those threads. I'm well aware of that specific OS X problem. I've been documenting it and collecting peoples stories for a good while now. The specific loss of footage I refer to was NOT that. PC couldn't read the data, either.

Like Smelni asked too,
did you try it first on the PC or first on the MAC?

I am really curious about your experienes Ben, not to mock on you, but to understand (and avoid) the problem.

I heard you starting talking about your P2 download problems on another thread(where you lost the historical footage, i think we all can immagine what that means..), but it would be great if you could recall the the whole event(s)
in detail.

I am not sure if it was you or someone else saying that there would be no differene for the chance to corrupt the footage if the P2 is protected or not.
Also here i would be very curious to hear from you and others how the data loss happened.(Write protected or not, PC or MAC)

I would consider to Hijack, or rather extend this thread a little and collect the "bad" P2 experiences, as more detail we get, the better we can protect!
So please, all of you feel free to write about your problems, specially if it hasnt happen on the MAC but PC, as it seems to be obvious that the whole apple thing hides a problem that is not the P2s fault.(at least in most of the cases..)

BenB, please share your experince in detail with us, this should be no way offensive, nobody is saying that P2 is bulletproof, but it would be great to find out
how we can avoid certain problems..!

p.s.Did you have any problems like that with the FS100?
I remember you wrote somewhere that you used the FS100 as a backup when you lost the historical footage..do i recall right here?

Jimmy,
go and get another computer to download the cards..if possible a PC...i guess i wouldnt be able to keep shooting in the same setup..you have a serious problem with you Computer/HVX/P2 cards....i would say its probably not the cards(the chance would be higher to win a billion dollar..), maybe the HVX, but probably the computer..keep us updated please and try to describe your whole experience as much in detail as possible...!

Good Luck!

My bad experience was long and involved and I just don't want to rehash it again. I'm glad it's over, it's not happened again since, I'm thinking it was a fluke happening. Same clips on FS-100 and P2 cards were corrupt, leading me to suspect something in the camera. Camera checked out fine by a local tech. No problems since. Except that pesky Mac bug.

You may have a faulty camera. I would suggest going back to the dealer for help. It may or may not be a camera issue but as you are still under warranty they should help you find the root cause.

It ain't the camera. It's the Mac.

(I mean, I guess there's a chance it's a faulty camera, but many people, all Mac users, have reported the digital glitches. That's a known Mac problem, and only Apple can fix it.)

In the transfer or the playback. 'Cause the glitches were seen first in the Avid.

Is the avid running on a mac?
If not, did you use a mac to transfer the cards to a hard drive prior to importing into the avid?
If so, did the mac have any Norton software installed on it?

EDIT: I just read one of your original posts, saying you used a G4 PB to offload. Does it have Norton software installed?

No on the Norton. In fact the only thing that computer has on it is FCP 5.0.4 and OSX 10.4

I thought the last compatible OS with FCP v 5.0.4 was OS 10.3.9.
