P2 Adapter to Macbook Pro 10.6 OS X Snow Leopard ?

Hehe. Toronto, Canada actually. My mother is British though so I suppose I use some British words for things from time to time without really thinking about it.

they really are. their drives are on par with any other media-centric brand out there. and their customer service is superb!

thats funny. i worked for a uk based company for a couple years about a decade ago. and to this day i still use z's where s's go...
 
Hmmm... there are lots of good deals on older 2008 model Macbook pros online (like my old 17", but the 15" version). I think I may go for one of those as my on-set laptop after all since it seems to be a matter of $200-$300 vs. $500-$700. Not a bad deal at all.
 
keep in mind that NONE of the macbook pros have a pcmcia slot, so youll have to either buy the duel adapter (which is going the way of the dodo) or panasonics new single-slot usb2.0 P2 reader. thats another $300

Quite right. I already own the Duel Adapter from my old 17" Macbook Pro from 2008 which works fine since that computer is still running Leopard.

As I said in my previous post I was intending to give that old machine to my father since getting my new Core i7 MBP. Just a few minutes ago he told me that a 17" laptop is too big for his purposes (e-mail, web browsing, word processing and spreadsheets primarily... he works in finance) anyway and that he wants to buy a 13" Macbook Pro. Hence, I suppose that I get to keep my old MBP as a transfer station.

So, problem solved I guess, I have a Q2 2008 17" Macbook Pro with a Duel Adapter as my transfer/on set machine now and a 17" Core i7 MBP for editing. Probably a bit more horsepower than necessary for just a transfer station, but obviously it's cheaper than me buying a new machine since it's too big for my dad anyway.
 
Barry, I have plugged in my HVS 200 with firewire to my MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard, and I'm not seeing the two P2 cards. I want to move them to a hard drive, then upload them for my Producer. Can you help me with this?

I've already downloaded P2CMS v1.4.8, and the firewire is connected to the camera (it's in playback mode), but I'm not seeing the drive. How can I do this. Thanks!

once in "playback mode" hold the MCR button down until you see the screen read "firewire connect". a few seconds later your card(s) should appear on your desktop
 
I just updated my powerbook to snow leo and am fighting since hours with my duel adapter until i found this:

forget duel for the future lets hope panny comes with a solution otherwise i am saying good bye to P2 very very soon!

Panasonic already came out with a solution, the PCD2. That's the way to go. Forget the Duel and all the other expresscard adapters, they're just not reliable, and since Apple killed off the Duel with Snow Leopard, there's really no Mac alternative. If you want an inexpensive P2 reader, the PCD2 is it.
 
yeah man. this has been pretty much common knowledge for approaching two years now. sorry you had to find out the hard way : (

one thing i ALWAYS do before doing ANY apple system upgrade is google "reasons not to upgrade to _________"
and when youre done with that. come here to dvxuser and maybe creativecow and do a similar search.
only then, proceed with the upgrade.

thats why my main production machine is still on leopard.

and yeah, like barry suggested the pcd2 is a pretty bullet prooof option. though at $350 for a simple reader. i would hardly call it "inexpensive"
 
thanks for the info Barry, I cooled down a bit and am now whipping out my old G4 powerbook! It has Tiger on it and a real PCMCIA slut:)
downsides: no updates and super old unsupported stuff.....I have to go for a big shoot tomorrow morning for a whole week in romania and luckily checked the duel after snow leo upgrade...imagine i was stuck in the karpatian woods without a possibility to log and transfer! Luckily I always have my FS100 with me so when the cards are full I can continue. thanks for the heads up wgzn! I had such a stressful week with swapping harddrives in the MBP that I totally forgot to check THIS hiccup and went full snow leo without thinking. what a trap. I might actually reinstall leo once I am back and have some time. I just checked the pcd2....usb 2?? and ohh yes panny made one thats usb 3 AJ-PCD30...for friggin 3000 bux....something tells me the P2 story is about to end 4me if they dont come up with something quick! broadcasters here are dumping P2 like its 0day tomorrow! yes I can still sell DVCPROHD but its XDCAM HD all over the place and required in many situations because they like the blueray dvd´s so much more.....they want the material they bought and not a copy...
