P2 720p/24PN Workflow Clarifications

Long time reader first time poster,

I'm in the beginning stages of editing a documentary shooting on the HVX and I wanted to clarify some things based on a lot of what I’ve read here. I've been reading about the HVX since before it came out, but this is the first time I've encountered it in my work.

---

To clarify:

This project is being edited on a Mac.

The project is being shot in 720p 24PN. We currently have Final Cut 5.1.4 but intend to purchase 6.0.2 with our new Mac Pro, soon.

I’m aware and thankful of all the notes to insure that I write-protect the P2’s while capturing in any way.

---

Statements/questions I’m looking for confirmation or answers on:

-720p 24PN is smaller on the disk than 720p 24P.

-Final Cut 5.1.4 cannot setup a 24PN timeline. Final Cut 6.0.2 can.

-Final Cut 5.1.4 takes the MXF file and makes a reference QuickTime out of it to edit from. This effectively almost doubles the amount of storage one uses for a single clip.

-Does Final Cut 6.0.2 do the same and make a reference QuickTime/double the storage?

-Raylight can make it possible to copy the CONTENTS directory to your drive and edit straight from the MXF files, thus NOT doubling your storage size. To clarify, this is done by loading the contents folder itself, not the MXF files individually.

-Raylight is not yet compatible with OSX 10.5 according to their site. Is this still the case?

-If not using Raylight, the best option for importing would still be to use the setup found here: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=118672

I know I’ll have more questions but responses to this would be most helpful. If anyone has additional insight they wouldn’t mind sharing here that would be awesome. If anyone reads this and wants to call me (edit: or AIM me), send me a private message to arrange that.

Otherwise, thanks for your patience and thanks again!

I've run into this issue also and would love to hear more regarding the latest version of Mac OS 10.5 and FCP 6.0.2.

Correct! PN mode only captures 24 frames where as 24p captures 60 frames every second and flags the 24 for extraction later in post.

-Final Cut 5.1.4 cannot setup a 24PN timeline. Final Cut 6.0.2 can.
Incorrect! A 24p timeline is the same in either version. There is not a selection for 24PN in FCP as a 24p timeline is in effect 24pn.

Correct! Your MXF files should be treated as a master and stored on a different drive to your scratch disk. When you import P2 it will create QT files on your scratch drive that you will use to edit with.

Yes!

Haven't used Raylight so I will leave these for someone else to answer.

How about this: 6.0.2 can use the easy setup feature to register that you intend to use 24PN footage, whereas 5.1.4 cannot, yes? This is more along the lines of what I meant.

If this is indeed the case, if I shoot a different framerate will it under or overcrank it?

Thanks for the feedback!

I've spent the last bit here trying to find again a picture/site that showed how you can do an easy setup with 720p/24PN in Final Cut 6.0.2. I was distinctly under the impression that you could choose it as an option because of the PN mode on the HVX... will continue searching, and thanks David for your feedback - can anyone else confirm/deny this?

Best,

P.Cook

I can confirm again because I've been doing it for twenty months.

The DVCProHD 720/24p easy set up is used for 24pn footage.
