Over Exposing

I need some help if possible, with my HMC150's. I have two of them.

Both of them have recently developed a condition where when I go outdoors with them they horribly over-expose the scene. It's a total white-out. The cam (in auto iris, or anything else I put it in) indicates it's on 1/120th of a second at f/9.6. It flashes a warning to use a 1/4 ND filter, then 1/16th.
When I do that, the picture does improve. If I manually change the shutter speed to 1/500, it still does it. Using the ND filters is my only way of controlling exposure!

Yet when I use the cams indoors, there does not seem to be a problem.

I was not able to make any other cam I own do this (Pana GS400, Canon HFS-10, XHA1). They all handled simple outdoor shooting w/o a hitch. The 150's used to handle such a mundane task with no problems, too.

I have not seen this before on these cameras. In fact I have never seen any camera do this, where even when on auto, when you go outside on an average day the cam way over-exposes to the point that the entire viewfinder is almost pure white. I shoot a lot of sports (soccer) with them, and they have always done very well.

I took it to Panasonic service on Cahuenga Blvd, Hollywood. They gave me all kinds of time looking at it, trying to figure out what was wrong. They set it back to factory, out-of-the-box settings and it still did it. They acknowledged that the problem was real, that it was not "normal", that the camera should not be doing this.

They ultimately they recommended that I go to the NAB show and ask Barry Green, or Jan if it was due to some setting that they were unaware of.

Has anyone else experienced this condition, and if so how did you resolve it? I have a lot of work coming up that I will need these cams for.

Thanks in advance!

I had something like this happen to me not to long ago . But mine was closing the iris automactically so the camera went pitch black ...and every now and then he would open the iris only to go dark again.
In auto mode the camera was just fine.

Solution:
I reset the camera page 83 and then I took out the battery and left it like that for 5-10 minutes. Started it up and everthing has been a ok !

Not sure what caused it But I believe I accidentley pressed the user 2 " backlight button" while trying to adjust the iris or focus.Again not sure and I dont want to test it out.

Luckily I was done filming....or somebody was gonna have a hissy fit.

I sure hope it turns out ok
goodluck !

You took to a PANASONIC SERVICING PLACE and their final recommendation ended up being to GO TO NAB AND ASK BARRY GREEN?..... does that seem strange to anybody else?

:bath:

Strange that this should suddenly happen to two cameras at once... what settings changes have you made to both of them recently?

Wait. This sounds correct. I always blow out outdoors unless I set it to a 4 stop ND (1/16th) or if I shoot relatively wide open at 8 stops. I'm confused as to what is wrong. This is the same with any camera, like the DVX.

You can't shoot in sunlight without an ND filter. You're gonna get nothing but overexposure.

Am I missing something?

Okay, first of all -- I'm not even at NAB this year. Second, whoa -- when did I become the new Panasonic service dept? heh.

Anyway: you should pretty much always be using the ND filter outdoors. Consumer cameras usually have automatic ND filters, but pro cameras rarely ever do; normally you have to manually switch in the ND filter.

Indoors, ND filter should usually be set to off. Outdoors in broad daylight, it'll be impossible to get a proper exposure unless you have at LEAST ND1/16, and probably you'll need ND1/64.

Now, if a service center declared it's abnormal, that's one thing, but it sounds to me like you just need to use the right level of ND filter. Go outside tomorrow, use ND1/64, set the shutter to "off", and put the iris on auto. It should give you a properly exposed picture. If it doesn't, then yeah there's something wrong. If it does, then there's nothing wrong with the camera, but the advice you got from the service center would seem ... inaccurate, let's say.

I have to say that if you spent the money to come to NAB to ask Barry or I this question, 1. you wouldn't find Barry. sadly, and 2 you would get the answer that Barry just gave from someone, maybe even me. Although you might have difficult time getting to me as I am responsible for 3 new cameras at this show and I fully expect it will be much like that show back in 2005 where we introduced the HVX200. Now this is a hint about something big.

Use the ND filters, it is why they are there.

Best,

jan

3 new camcorders - I take a guess:

1. The new HPX 370 - confirmed

2. The new 3D Camcorder

3. http://43rumors.com/ft2-panasonic-camcorder-with-m43-lenses-to-be-on-nab/
....which indeed would be a gamechanger like the HVX in 2005 !!!

Okay cat is out of the bag, we are goig to offer a 4/3s camera recording to AVCCAM.

Very cool.

When you go outside from the indoor shooting situation, you need to switch from ND wheel setting 1 to 3 or 4. That is a normal condition, auto iris or not. For the quickest adjustment, keep your other finger on the momentary auto-iris button as you go out.

There is no seamless way to do this, but the prescribed method should resolve that explosive white overexposure.

Thanks everyone for all your responses. Was away this weekend, could not get back any sooner.
I am going to send it for service along with a sample of what it's doing now that it has not done before and see what the factory service center says.
