Shot a documentary on the P2 cards and edited it on FCP HD Timeline. Now I need to output it and give the client a master copy on mini dv. I do have a dv deck.. what do i need to do to output it to dv, do i need to put it on a DV timeline? Also how much resolution will i lose?

thanks.

You'll get horrible compression that way. You need to export it using compressor and use the adavnced format conversion to DV/DVCAM NTSC. Then under frame controls, select the letterbox option so it doesn't squeeze the image. then import it back into final cut.

It still uses NTSC DV 5:1 compression. No way around it.

i have to give final copy in Pal , how much will it compress? Also if i put it in Pal timeline i can output straight to dv through dv deck after render.

You must convert NTSC to PAL either via hardware or software. Excellent software converter is the Nattress G Converter package, for $100 (www.nattress.com). Compressor can also transcode but I think that Nattress does a better job. You can then place in PAL timeline and output to PAL DV deck such as any of the Sony decks which have both a PAL and NTSC capability. I have a Sony DSR-25 which does either PAL or NTSC (but does not transcode).
